Would You Want It If It Were Free?
| |
| The meme of “Free” is one again making the rounds. I expect it reignited when Chris Anderson’s new book Free: The Future of a Radical Price (available on Amazon for $17.81) quickly followed by Malcolm Gladwell’s semi-scathing review in the New Yorker titled “Priced to Sell. Is Free the future?” (I kind of feel like Gladwell wimped out on the review, even though I like Anderson’s point of view better than Gladwell’s.) This then created a predictable tussle in the blogosphere, the kind of which I find tedious and dull, so I avoided the rest of it. |

Free Stuff -- Someone Pays Even for the Free Lunch
| |
| There is a whole group of people who grew up on the Internet that believes everything
that is out there should be free. Stewart Brand set the stage back in 1984 at
the first Hacker's Conference when he said -- Information Wants To Be Free. Information
also wants to be expensive. ... That tension will not go away.
The person who stole the pre-release of Wolverine thought it was neat that he
(or she) could give it away free. Millions viewed it -- free. Millions more refused
knowing that if they really wanted to see it they should pay someone for it.
At the end of the day an organization has to put money in the cash register so
bills will be paid and people will have food/shelter. There is no such thing
as a free lunch |

Using FREE to Build Your Small Business Brand
| |
| I ended a recent article with the suggestion that all of your website content should be offered for free. I thought it would be a good idea to follow that statement up with some ideas and rationale on why free content helps create awareness and build brand equity. |

Making Space For MySpace: The Internet Gets A New Leader
| |
| Neither DeWolfe nor Anderson particularly liked authority, but in each other they found not only a friend, but somebody they also respected and with whom they could work well. After Xdrive, the company they had both been working for, ended up in bankruptcy in the dot-com bubble burst, DeWolfe and Anderson decided to go into business with each other. |

How Twitter Made My Website Better
| |
| A few weeks ago Chris Brogan published a list of the 100 blog topics that he wished people would cover. One of them was, “How Twitter Improved My Blog,” and I accepted the challenge to write something along these lines. (For those of you who are unfamiliar with Twitter, you can read “The Tao of Twitter,” “Newbies Guide to Twitter,” or “Ode to Twitter.”) Here is my answer to Chris’s request. |

Education and Communication Build Commitment
| |
| Shortly after Vanessa, our second daughter was born, my wife Heather was talking with six year old Chris, our only son, about how much she liked having a boy in the family. "If you like little boys so much, how come you brought home another girl?" Chris tearfully rebutted.
Chris and his sister Jenn had been hoping for a younger sibling of their own sex. When Vanessa was born, Chris felt like he'd lost. He didn't understand the process. He assumed his Mom and Dad chose the sex of their kids.
