Lesson #5: Do Well by Doing Good
“He is ill clothed that is bare of virtue,” wrote Franklin. “A good conscience is a continual Christmas.” Despite being wealthy enough to retire comfortably by the age of 42, Franklin continued to pursue civic projects and carry out benevolent acts throughout the rest of his life. He staunchly believed that the good life was achievable in direct proportion to one’s contribution to society and thus, from universities to hospitals to firehouses, Franklin dedicated his resources to giving back.

My dream to be a speaker was born in 1952 . . . . However, it wasn't until 1968 that I was able to go full-time in the business, and it wasn't until 1972 that my career really took off. I spoke to civic clubs, schools, rehab centers, prisons, churches--to virtually any group that permitted me to share with them.

Oh, well, “one day or one trial” isn’t so bad. I am ready to do my civic duty. I believe in our government and the trial-by-jury-of-our-peers system. If a case of mine were being tried, wouldn’t I want me to be on the jury? My mood improved, I call in on the appointed day and receive instructions to show up Monday..
