A Mental Model For VC Investments

A reader asked me the other day if – in the words of Charlie Munger – I have a “mental model” for investing in early stage companies. I do, but I’d rather give examples of the two best approaches I’ve heard of from other people.

Marriage

As the 10th of 12 children, my older brothers and sisters obviously got here many years before I did. Two of my older brothers and two of my older sisters had failed marriages. Since I was at the bottom of the production chain, my younger brother and I had the benefit of what my mother had observed and taught us. She pointed out that we should never date a girl more than once or twice if we discovered we would be unwilling to have her as the mother of our children and be unwilling to take her wherever we were and introduce her with pride to anyone. I listened intently to what my mother had to say. I chose carefully.

The chicken and the egg

I was riffing with someone about an idea last week and I told him he had the, "chicken and an egg problem." It seemed like he knew what I meant, and I thought I knew what I meant, but I've since decided it's worth a few paragraphs.

Hitting The Bull's Eye

Somebody once said the difference between a big shot and little shot is that the big shot was the little shot who kept on shooting. There's much truth in that witticism. The reality is, no matter what our target might be, we seldom hit it on the first try unless the target is low, which means the accomplishment--and the rewards--will be insignificant.

Failure Comes From Not Following Your Additive Rules

The cliche “rules were meant to be broken” is a common one in the world of entrepreneurship. Paul Berberian – a great entrepreneur (and dear friend) almost died yesterday when flying his airplane because he broke three of his rules of flying in a row. Paul got lucky and I very glad he’s alive.

Death, Public Speaking, and Seniors' Homes

| Lots of us like to blithely retail the cliche about people being more afraid of public speaking than death, but I was caught up abruptly by an analogous finding in scanning some market research today on senior citizens in America:

Ambition - Good or Bad?

An anonymous writer said that ambition, fueled by compassion, wisdom and integrity, is a powerful force for good. It will turn the wheels of industry and open the door of opportunity for you and countless thousands of other people. Fueled by greed and the lust for power, ambition is a destructive force that ultimately does irreparable damage to the individual in its grasp and to the people within its reach.

Thank God It's Monday?

70% of Americans state they do not like their jobs. Entrepreneur magazine recently reported there is a 33% increase in the number of heart attacks on Monday mornings and a 25% increase in work related injuries on Mondays. The Center for Disease Prevention in Atlanta says there are more deaths at 9:00 Monday morning than any other time of the day, or any other day of the week.

Ten Reasons Businesses Fail to Make Business Networking Work for Them

| With the New Year fast approaching, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on what you might be doing to stop yourself making the most of your business networking. Have a look through this list and ask yourself where you are falling down.
Perhaps that will give you some food for thought as you consider your new year's resolutions on January 1st.

Reap Rewards with the Right Reputation

We’ve all heard the old cliche, “Under-Promise and Over-Deliver”. It’s easier said than done, isn’t it? Today, in these challenging economic times, many people tend to promise prospective customers more so they perceive the value as better than what a competitor can offer. Those same people also enjoy over-promising to make themselves feel more valued. Do they not think these actions will come back to haunt them? The overall point I’d like to make today is that we cannot build a reputation for ourselves or our company by what we say we can do. We build good reputations by delivering what our customers need.

That dog won’t hunt

Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmer’s adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: “In like a lamb, out like a lion.” Or “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end – and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichés that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, “Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight.”
