Leadership Assessment #2 – Level of Trust
| |
| There are hundreds of assessments for leaders. The content and quality of these assessments vary greatly. You can spend a lot of time and money taking surveys to tell you the quality of your leadership. There are a few leading indicators that can be used to give a pretty good picture of the overall quality of your leadership. These are not good for diagnosing problems or specifying corrective action, but they can tell you where you stand quickly. Here is one of my favorite measures. It is the level of trust within the organization. |

Is a climate of perpetual discounting limiting choice and eroding our quality of life?
| |
| Gerry Harvey, (Harvey Norman) was recently bemoaning the culture of discounting in our retail sector. He was saying that retailers had lost the plot and didn’t know how to sell real value anymore. He said they had fallen foul of a culture of constant discounting as the only way to attract customers, which was tantamount to business disaster and a degradation of the retail sector. I happen to agree with Gerry in this instance.
He went further by saying that retailers were failing to find out what customers really wanted and what they really valued. He said retailers weren’t offering choice – a range of options of different value and therefore were not selling. |

Deflation - Defined
| |
| While we believe we are in a recovery phase, it has certainly not met the expectations of most individuals. I recall an interview of Nouriel Roubini who was asked if we were going to have a double dip. His reply was no, but we will have such slow growth that it will feel like we are in a recession. In addition, many news stories have been carrying the headline of 'deflation.' Deflation is actually an uncommon climate here in the U.S., but anything is possible. To learn more about deflation and how it affects your investments, please read on. |

Warren Buffett Owner Principle #5
| |
| In this principle, we are concerned mainly with the significance of numbers of running a business. Which ones are relevant? ROI,EBITDA, Earnings, Sales? The Consolidated Earnings statement is one that every incorporated and publicly traded company must render annually. The Number One goal to keep in mind is the earnings of each of the major businesses of Berkshire Hathaway. Also closely observe the industry and the business environment in which the business is functioning. Keep in mind that Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company model with little or no debt and huge cash reserves. |

How to manage your way through an Economic Downturn
| |
| Challenging economic downturns expose floors in most businesses and organisations which will include some of your people, and in turn will have an adverse effect on the overall performance of the company. Staff can become despondent, de-motivated and unsure of their future which will eventually affect customer service, quality, efficiencies and production.
To be successful you will need to manage your people better than ever before, retain your top performers and where a vacancy exists utilise only the most robust recruitment processes to identify a candidate that can bring talent and where possible portable assets with them.

Networking: A Way of Life
| |
| In this economy in which large companies are growing at a slower pace than in the past and given the highly transactional marketplace, workers are changing jobs more frequently either by choice or by necessity. People who previously have targeted only large corporations are looking elsewhere, often to smaller companies. This job climate makes networking even more important. Now, more than ever, it is a necessity, not an option.
But because time is truly a precious commodity for many professional women, networking, unfortunately, has often been put on the back burner. The busier the woman, the more networking has lagged behind in priorities. Professional women have missed tremendous opportunities to grow their careers exponentially, and can no longer afford to neglect this critical, strategic career builder. |

The "Never Play Favorites" Myth
| |
| Many year's ago, while training at a branch of Dean Whitter (now Morgan Stanley), I learned an important management truth. The branch manager at this office was mandated by corporate to spend a minimum of 60 percent of his time working with and supporting the stock brokers who had been given offices (based on their top performance) surrounding the "bull pen," where the vast majority of the brokers had cubicles. Those staff members in the cubicles were allocated 40 percent of the manager's time. |

The Best of Times...The Worst of Times? Part 2
| |
| Do you get the impression that everyone is missing the point to our current economic climate (I prefer “climate” to “crisis”). All common sense solutions first identify the “root cause” of the problem. There are plenty of examples in our daily lives. Want to avoid a hangover?...DON’T drink, care to avoid lung cancer?...DON’T smoke, indigestion?...avoid spicy foods. When you go to the doctor seeking help with your cholesterol or blood pressure the doctor will prescribe medicine and a regimen of diet and exercise that will work towards solving the root cause of the problem. Why haven’t we taken the same approach to solving the root cause of our current “climate”?

Help! My sales team isn’t coping with the fallout from the GFC
| |
| Many sales people, for the first time, are experiencing tough times when it comes to selling and many are not sure how to handle themselves in these difficult situations.
The current climate is, indeed, a test of character.
Many sales people, especially those in their 20's and 30's have not likely experienced selling in tough markets before. For the past 12 years prior to 2008, at least, the business climate in our market place has been, for the most part, buoyant. As we all know it's very easy to sell when times are good.
It now begs the question: How well have we prepared ourselves practically, emotionally, and physically to manage our way through these tough times? |

Creating Your Marketing Plan for 2010 for your Self-Storage Facility
| |
| Have things changed in today’s economy? Some say yes, some say no. I, for one, believe that marketing is one of the most critical aspects that will determine your success or failure in this business, or any business, no matter what the economic climate may be. Furthermore, it never ceases to amaze me that when occupancy is low, and traffic is down, some companies decide to actually decrease their marketing efforts; the very thing that brings customers in the door! With that in mind, I encourage you, no matter what your occupancy, or the current economic climate looks like, to set aside a budget of roughly 6-8% of your gross projected annual rental revenue for marketing and advertising to build your marketing plan around. |
