The Courageous Captain: Turner Takes Television By Storm

Wary of the increasing popularity of television and radio, Turner decided to purchase the struggling Atlanta-based television station WJRJ in 1969. He renamed Turner Advertising to Turner Communications Group and began plans for realizing his grander vision. Just six months later, Turner purchased WRET, a similarly weak station based in North Carolina and in four years managed to make a profit of $1 million. Turner had bought the rights to classic black and white films, and by airing these he was able to increase his number of viewers dramatically. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had also changed their rules to allow cable providers to import signals from far-away stations, which Turner would soon begin to take advantage of.

Lesson #2: Never Surrender

“All my life people have said that I wasn’t going to make it,” said Turner. “They laughed at me when I started with CBS. They laughed at me when I started CNN. They laughed at me when I bought the Braves. They laughed at me when I bought the Hawks. They laughed at me when I bought MGM.” But, the billionaire entrepreneur can now look back on the success of his 40-odd year career and be thankful he never listened to any of those people.

Lesson #4: Work Like Hell
When Turner was once asked what the secret of business success was, he replied, “Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.” With typical workdays consisting of 18 hours, Turner was an admitted overachiever and a workaholic. The passion he had for his work, saying, “CNN came out of my heart and soul,” meant that anything less than his best would not have been acceptable.

Lesson #5: Every Business Needs its Cheering Bull
“You'll fail at some things – that’s a learning experience that you need so that you can take that on to the next experience,” says Omidyar. “What you learn from those challenges and those failures are what will get you past the next ones…I was the pretty consistent bull and the cheerleader on eBay actually.”

Two weeks ago I attended the African Travel Association’s Second Annual Presidential Forum on Tourism at New York University. The forum, organized by the ATA - a global travel trade association promoting tourism to Africa - and hosted by NYU’s Africa House, was put together to provide African leaders from Tanzania, Ghana, Cape Verde, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi, and Rwanda with the opportunity to “present the continent’s rich travel opportunities to almost 200 leaders from government, non-government and business communities, the tourism industry, travel trade media, and education”.

I Wasn't Losing……..
I recently saw Ted Turner being interviewed on CNN. The interviewer asked Ted how he kept going when his sailing team lost year after year and his baseball team was in last place for four years before going on to win the World Series. Without any hesitation Ted said, “I wasn’t losing, I was learning how to win.”
