Estee Lauder Biography
| |
| The Estee Lauder biography is a story of an anything but ordinary woman. Born Josephine Esther Mentzer on July 1, 1908 in Queens, New York, the cosmetics queen the world would later come to know as Estee Lauder grew up in a busy household. She was the youngest of nine children to parents who had immigrated from Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Her father owned a hardware store in Queens, above which the family lived in a small apartment. |

Ice Cream Kings: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are Born
| |
| “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream,” proclaims Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of one of the most popular brands of ice cream in the U.S. Indeed, the success of Ben & Jerry’s since its launch almost thirty years ago seems to support his claim. From the $5 correspondence course in ice cream making Greenfield and his partner Ben Cohen took from the Pennsylvania State University in 1978, to being named “U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year” by President Reagan in 1988, the childhood friends not only achieved tremendous success, but they did so on their own terms. |

Warm Up to Cold Calling
| |
| Cold calling: For many of us, the word "cold" is the key. Just the thought of picking up the phone sends a chill up our spines. Unfortunately, if we approach cold calling with an attitude of negativity, we’ll communicate that attitude to the prospect. |
|
|
Appearance
| |
| Okay - I admit it - this one is extreme. Several years ago before I realized that my body retains ice cream, my wife and I were in our favorite ice cream parlor. An unusual-looking young man walked through the front door. In my lifetime I have never seen anything like it. His hair was sticking out in every direction and came to a point at the top so sharp that it was dangerous. He had every imaginable color represented - green, purple, orange, red, lavender, black - it was really a sight to behold! |

Customers Needs-The One and Only Way to Know For Sure What To Sell
| |
| If it were up to me there would only be two or three flavors of ice cream ever created. If you don't love chocolate chip and strawberry ice cream it is a good thing for you my tastes and desires aren't the holy grail of what sells!
Don't let your preferences and desires determine what you sell. And for your businesses sake, don't assume that your preferences are shared by your customer. Desire and motivation is unique to each of us. Even if we ultimately purchase the same product we often do so for very different reasons and therefore need to be marketed to differently. |

A Website Without Video Is Like...
| |
| Do you like Jell-O? It's okay I guess; I mean it's not a hot fudge sundae is it? But if you add a little whip cream, then my friend you've got something worth calling dessert. My question to you is, does your website have that something extra, that dollop of whip cream on top that says, "oh mama let me at it," or does it just lie there squirming in your dish with the sound of Peggy Lee's voice ringing in your ears, "is that all there is?" |

Cold calling is daunting. Got any tips?
| |
| Yes I do, in fact - Don't cold call! Not unless you are selling in a way that is radically different or fundamentally better than everyone else.
Then maybe you stand a chance, but the odds are stacked heavily against you. I couldn't tell you the last time a cold caller cut-through and engaged me emotionally over the phone. In fact, I dare say I have never purchased something from a cold caller.
|
|
|
What approach should I take when cold calling?
| |
| I encourage people to cold-call by coming from a place of 'contribution' first; I call this approach 'buying-in'. In highly resistant sales executions, like cold-calling, you have to buy-in before you can successfully sell-in because the mass of cold-callers that have gone before you, have trained your customers to ignore you. |

|
GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE
| |
| I could just tell by the look of them they were going to be difficult. There were going to want to split their meals, order a half salad, half French fries. They were the type that when they ordered a strawberry sundae it they would make some ridiculous request for a dab of whipping cream. Not a dollop. And God help her if one of them orders a milkshake. She’d be at the milkshake maker up to her elbows in chocolate ice cream. |
