Warm Up to Cold Calling

Cold calling: For many of us, the word "cold" is the key. Just the thought of picking up the phone sends a chill up our spines. Unfortunately, if we approach cold calling with an attitude of negativity, we’ll communicate that attitude to the prospect.

Even YOU could sell snow to the Eskimos!

We all know that Eskimos primarily use snow to build houses. How then could you sell them more of something, which is abundant and free? But what if you had a type of snow that did not melt in the summer, yet still had the insulation properties of snow in the winter. Do you think you could sell that to the Eskimos?

My call: Snow Leopard by July, quad-core iMacs by October

| Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu thinks Mac OS X 10.6 (“Snow Leopard”) may not arrive until late summer or early fall. I think the beast will begin prowling in the June-July time period. However, I agree withe Wu that we’ll see a quad-core iMac before year’s end that will capitalize on Snow Leopard’s beefed up support for multiple core processors.

Cold calling is daunting. Got any tips?

| Yes I do, in fact - Don't cold call! Not unless you are selling in a way that is radically different or fundamentally better than everyone else.
Then maybe you stand a chance, but the odds are stacked heavily against you. I couldn't tell you the last time a cold caller cut-through and engaged me emotionally over the phone. In fact, I dare say I have never purchased something from a cold caller.

What approach should I take when cold calling?

I encourage people to cold-call by coming from a place of 'contribution' first; I call this approach 'buying-in'. In highly resistant sales executions, like cold-calling, you have to buy-in before you can successfully sell-in because the mass of cold-callers that have gone before you, have trained your customers to ignore you.

Stop Cold Calling! Turn Your Prospects Into Clients

Sales should be fun, something you look forward to, and a skill that you are motivated to develop and enhance. For most people, it is something they dread and cold calling is a big reason. Why do people cold call? It always amazes me. It isn't fun, it is stressful and no one really ever feels good after it is over. If you want to turn your prospects into customers then stop cold calling!

After a historically intense winter, during which at one point 49 out of the 50 U.S. states had snow on the ground, people are eagerly embracing spring. However, the melted snow is revealing the damaging effects and the toll that the winter weather took on trees and landscaping. Resuscitating lawns, shrubs and trees that have been ravaged by a relentless winter is proving to be a boon for landscaping and lawn care businesses that restore lawns to their green glory.

The Snowman Story. Is it too soon to measure massive action?

I often ask them to try to think of their business like building a snow man. Everyone knows that when beginning to put the base of the snowman together you need to start with a very small snowball. It may take a few tries to get a good solid snowball – but if the snow is wet enough you can begin to roll it on the ground to collect more snow. And as it grows bigger and bigger – and it begins to peel all the wet snow off the ground, you may look around and notice that the base is not quite as big as you want it – but the only place left that you have not rolled your snowball is on the hill. You know the one.. the one we love to come down but hate to go up
