Those "Instant" Successes
Many times an unknown person does something spectacular and suddenly becomes a "hero," a public figure, an "overnight success," the object of much envy. Let's explore this "overnight success" syndrome.

Do You Want To Become A Rainmaker
During my 35 year career, I have had the privilege of being referred to as a "Rainmaker" in several news articles and stories during interviews with some of my clients. I take that as a very kind compliment. Some may ask, what is a "Rainmaker?" The American Indian tradition would say that the Rainmaker used magical powers to bring rain to nourish crops to feed the people of the tribe. Today, the most common and simplistic definition I can offer would be this: A "Rainmaker" is a person who brings the most revenue into a company or organization and the revenue or money is the rain. Today's "Rainmaker" makes things happen, generates the most new customers, new business and takes the art of the doing business to new levels.

Cold Calling - Fish or Fowl?
In my last post, I talked about how marketing should be used to create leads, NOT sales reps. But what about cold calling you ask? Cold calling is a sales rep role and responsibility yet it creates leads, right? Wrong. Cold calling is actually a form of Marketing NOT sales, since it creates leads not customers. Unfortunately, cold calling is the most expensive and least efficient method of creating leads that exists.

Guerrilla Marketing Memes
The prehistoric man, Uba, spent all day in the rain trying to catch a fish because his family was very hungry and in dire need of food. But he was unable to grab a fish from the stream even though he occasionally got his hands on one. Frustrated and weak from hunger, he just couldn't grab any fish firmly enough because it would slither from his hands and return to the stream. Worse yet, the light rain turned to a heavy rain and Uba was forced to seek shelter in a nearby cave.

Warm Up to Cold Calling
Cold calling: For many of us, the word "cold" is the key. Just the thought of picking up the phone sends a chill up our spines. Unfortunately, if we approach cold calling with an attitude of negativity, we’ll communicate that attitude to the prospect.

MYTH: Cold calling is a good idea
In the "olden days" when I first started my business, over 95% of my sales came about through cold calling, which I had learnt to do really well when I worked as a sales recruitment specialist with Morgan & Banks. At M&B - and in my business - it was very clear that if I didn't bill anything I didn't earn anything. So I got on the phones and I prospected to people I didn't know - that is, cold calling. This was well and truly before the internet was in mainstream use and I had the privilege of learning how to cold call really well. But it is a FACT that in an essentially crowded market place of the 21st century, businesses require a series of "push" and "pull" prospecting strategies rather than one simplistic "push" approach to selling such as cold calling.

Cold calling is daunting. Got any tips?
Yes I do, in fact - Don't cold call! Not unless you are selling in a way that is radically different or fundamentally better than everyone else. Then maybe you stand a chance, but the odds are stacked heavily against you. I couldn't tell you the last time a cold caller cut-through and engaged me emotionally over the phone. In fact, I dare say I have never purchased something from a cold caller.

What approach should I take when cold calling?
I encourage people to cold-call by coming from a place of 'contribution' first; I call this approach 'buying-in'. In highly resistant sales executions, like cold-calling, you have to buy-in before you can successfully sell-in because the mass of cold-callers that have gone before you, have trained your customers to ignore you.

Prayer and purposeful action
I awoke early this morning to the sound of gentle rain falling and found myself immediately praying for more. This prayer came automatically during one of the most tragic weeks in Victoria’s history with the tragedy of the bush fires in many parts of our state. As a Victorian I have found myself upping my prayer quotient for rain for some time now, not just for the bush fires but for the many people whose lives are affected by the drought here and elsewhere. In addition to my prayers, like many families, my family and I have been doing our best to save water and change the size of our carbon foot print. Yet at times like this one can’t help but feel somewhat helpless and useless. All I felt I could do under the circumstances was to pray and give money.

Stop Cold Calling! Turn Your Prospects Into Clients
Sales should be fun, something you look forward to, and a skill that you are motivated to develop and enhance. For most people, it is something they dread and cold calling is a big reason. Why do people cold call? It always amazes me. It isn't fun, it is stressful and no one really ever feels good after it is over. If you want to turn your prospects into customers then stop cold calling!

Puddles in the Parking Lot
It was a cold October morning in Dayton, Ohio and as I left my house at 7am the skies opened up and it began to pour. It wasn't cold enough to turn the rain into ice but it was still chilly enough that I turned on the heater. Today we were having customers in. Not just any customer - General Motors was visiting our branch and we were going to make a presentation trying to secure all the distribution business for two of their local manufacturing facilities. We had a plan and we had rehearsed our game plan over and over.
