“Working A Room – The Top Ten Tips, From Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach”
“WOW!” That is just one word that comes to mind when I walk into a business function room and there are many people I already know, but many more people whom I have never met. And I envision the many new opportunities that exist in that room for contacts and connections, and maybe even some new friends. And as a strategic thinking business coach I also know that WOW is the last word some of you will think of when facing this situation. The words might be “OH NO!” So I decided to write this article to address both reactions. So what are the ten top tips on working a room? My research and personal experiences lead me to the following ten tips:

Laughter
Laughter is a great stress reducer. If you have never read Norman Cousins’ account of his experience of self-healing as described in Anatomy of an Illness, I encourage you to do so. When diagnosed with an incurable illness, he brought a movie projector into his hospital room and watched reel after reel of old classic comedy movies, laughing himself into hysterics. He found he could relieve his otherwise significant pain on a consistent basis through laughter. That practice, along with some other novel therapies, resulted in his healing. He left his prestigious journalistic career and taught on the faculty of a major medical school about the power of the mind and emotions in healing the body of disease.

Career Development Monty Python Style
So what do a doctor, lawyer, historian, graphic artist, English teacher, and script writer have in common? They are the original professions of the members of Monty Python’s Flying Circus comedy team!

Smart Tips for ‘Working the Room’
Once you’re at an event – whether social or business – you need to make the most of it and ‘work the room’. I witnessed some excellent working of the room at the Oaks Day cocktail party, which I’ll share with you here.

Home-based Business: Pillar Candles III
If you are into candle-making for your home-based business, pillar candles are among your creations. They are versatile on their appearance, effect, color, sizes and shapes. Depending on the theme of your decoration, there are a set that suit your living room, bed room, bathroom or even your dining room.

Leadership Tips: How to Spot Many Forms of Anger
Did you ever see anyone have a "purple fit"? That's when they bang their fists on a desk, sputter and spew, turn various shades of pink and red and either storm out of the room or demand that someone else make a quick exit. It's pretty easy to spot. If it's a boss you usually suck it up, tell a few friends in a whispered "wait till you hear this" manner. Often it produces some good comedy routines a la Jon Stewart, and then it's back to business as usual.

Our Values Shape Our Character and Culture
When he spotted his grandpa asleep on the family room couch, the rambunctious ten year old saw his chance. With cat-like stealth, Jason quietly crept up on grandpa and gently smeared a small bit of smelly old cheese into his moustache. As grandpa mumbled and stirred, Jason bolted from the room. Peeking around the corner, Jason fought it hard to contain himself as he watched grandpa open his eyes and take a sniff of the air. "Whew! This room stinks", grandpa exclaimed. Rising from the couch he went into the front hall.

Sales Courage and Resilience
We went to the movie, We Bought a Zoo and while it wasn't the comedy we expected it to be, it did have this: 20 seconds of courage.
