| The most common thief of sales growth is distraction. Based on my experience, I estimate that on average, employees lose 40% of their time to distractions. This number ranges between 30% and 60%, depending on the company they work for, and can reach as high as 70%, depending on the individual. Distractions can be classified into two types: 1) leadership and organization; and 2) individual-specific. The leadership and organization distractions can be categorized into poor sales support, customer service mishaps, products that do not meet client needs, bad sales management, and poor communications. “Individual-specific” distractions refer to daily mental or situational conditions faced by the salesperson. In the State of the Union address, President Obama called common sense a novel concept. It may be. However, if you are serious about creating the successful life and career you want and deserve, you will embrace your common sense. You'll apply your inner knowing of what to do to when it comes to succeeding in this life and in your career. |

| We are all born with five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. These senses help us navigate our way through the world. They bring us delight in small things. They also warn us when danger threatens. However, I believe that we all have a sixth, and underused sense, our common sense. Your common sense helps you make the right decision in ambiguous situations -- but only if you use it. When I tell people that I'm the Common Sense Guy, people often come back with Will Rogers' saying, "Common sense isn't all that common." I disagree. I think that we all have innate common sense. It's a natural gift, just like our five other senses. We don't always use it though. If you are willing to let your common sense guide you today, you can use it as a guide tomorrow, the next day, next week and next month. |

| Over the weekend, I saw Point Blank, a French action thriller about a nurse at a Parisian hospital whose very pregnant wife has been kidnapped and will be killed unless he delivers to the kidnappers a thief who’s a patient in the hospital. It was so good. Even as my heart was pounding, I savored the twists and turns in the plot and didn’t want it to end. |
