Great Story Tellers
I have noticed that good sales people are often great storytellers. They have the ability to find the right story to resonate with your situation. They speak from experience and you know they know their stuff. They can paint a picture that is your picture and get you visualizing success in partnership with them. They seem to be able to connect disparate situations, events or feelings and find the common thread that binds them all together – together for you to connect with. And even if the story they are telling is not directly relevant to your business or market, the situation or person they describe feels familiar.

Who doesn't enjoy receiving kudos for a job well done, or good effort put forth, but how often do we think to dole them out to others. It's easy to get caught up in the flurry of work and home activities, and checking off the to-do list; taking dear family and friends a bit for granted.

Small Business Tips: Think Your Business To Success
Before any action happens in the world, first there is a thought ... an idea ... a stroke of genius. This thought triggers the response into the physical world. So say for example you want to pick up your coffee cup – your brain thinks the thought and then sends electrical impulses and chemicals to your arm muscles which in turn extend and contract to pick up your cup. But your eyes first assess how far away the cup is and how potentially heavy the cup is before you lift it – otherwise you would knock it over or spill the contents. What happens in many businesses is they miss the thought stage – leaping into action before fully have completed the thought action. As a result, mistakes and errors are made which mean re-work and wasted effort.

Sales and Marketing Common Sense
The most successful sales and marketing approaches are based on common sense. There is genius in their subtle simplicity. They may at first appear to be common knowledge and easy to implement, however, do not let this fool you because common sense is not so common. Here are a few basic marketing and sales principles often ignored by businesses.

As Usual Im Nobodys Market
After a brief email exchange today from an extremely smart and capable friend suggesting a potential feature for my blog, his response was “As usual, I’m nobody’s market.” He provided a humorous followup to the comment “that’s a great blog title” from one of the people on the email thread with “Ah, if only I didn't have to suck up to the world, that would be a great title for my contrarian-curmudgeon blog.”

Easy Investment Ideas for the Time Starved Entrepreneur
Get up, have a cup of coffee, go to work, get through your day, attend a meeting, go home, make dinner, crash. The next day—repeat the cycle. The only thing between you and a nervous breakdown is a thread. You don’t have time to think about investing.

Big Beautiful Bamboo
A trip overseas leads to a lesson in marketing that will never be forgotten. However, it doesn't begin where you think it might. Where you ask? A bamboo garden. Bamboo and business may not seem to go hand in hand, but over time you can see their common thread: Growth.

Great Story Tellers

Common Sense and Success
We are all born with five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. These senses help us navigate our way through the world. They bring us delight in small things. They also warn us when danger threatens. However, I believe that we all have a sixth, and underused sense, our common sense. Your common sense helps you make the right decision in ambiguous situations -- but only if you use it. When I tell people that I'm the Common Sense Guy, people often come back with Will Rogers' saying, "Common sense isn't all that common." I disagree. I think that we all have innate common sense. It's a natural gift, just like our five other senses. We don't always use it though. If you are willing to let your common sense guide you today, you can use it as a guide tomorrow, the next day, next week and next month.

Ask for Help!
In a recent interview I was asked what I thought was a common thread for all my clients. Without thinking, I answered, "They're ready and willing to ask for help". I knew it was true before, but I hadn't put it into words. Understanding and acknowledging this I can now focus on finding those who are ready to ask for help. That's a great insight. I can simply ask prospects if they are ready to get help.
