Communications Tips
| |
| "The Greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished."
George Bernard Shaw
The great quote by George Bernard Shaw confirms what I have experienced in my 35 plus year career. And in my past 23 years in my own business, I cannot think of a single instance where "communication" was not listed as a problem, challenge, frustration, irritant, etc. in the focus groups, discussion groups and other strategic planning endeavors I have conducted. Communication is a challenge. And it is an opportunity for very positive impressions if one works at doing it effectively. |

Play Catch with Communication

An associate and I facilitated a dialogue session for the Delta Chamber of Commerce on the attraction and retention of employees in the workplace. The dialogue session uncovered five areas that influence employees in the workplace. They are:
• Communication
• Attitude
• Flexibility
• Opportunity to Learn
• Fun
This series of five articles will focus on each of the five areas from the dialogue session.
Let’s begin with communication. Communication, in particular interpersonal communication, is the foundation for creating excellent organizations and great places to work.

Presentation And Writing Skills Training Yields Effective Business Communication Skills
| |
| The key to effective business communication is getting to the point, what Navy SEALs I worked with in a seminar called BLUF -- bottom line up front. Whether trying to sharpen your business writing skills or presentation skills, the key is to tell your reader or audience what you want (or what you want them to understand) and then tell them why that's important. For any writer practicing effective communication, that starts with "five Ws and one H" -- who, what, when, why, where and how.
The SEALs understood that all their hard-won knowledge has little value if they can't develop the communication skills to share it with the people who set policy, spend money and make far-reaching decisions. And those people are busy, so communication training, whether for writing skills or presentation skills, has to focus on brevity, |

Media Training, Marekting-Oriented Business Communication Go Hand In Hand
| |
| In the business communication training I've conducted over the years, I've found that communication skills don't have to be limited to the obvious focus on writing training and presentation skills (public speaking) training. There's more to getting your marketing message out there, and it involves reporters, editors and producers and their never-ending quest for "the story." It's all about media training.

Writing Skills Training And Media Training Clearly AIMed At Successful Business Communication
| |
| • Improving writing skills won't happen without a firm grasp of the premise that "writing is thinking." The same goes for presentation skills. Whether preparing a speech or briefing or drafting a written communication -- an email, memo or report -- effective business communication is achievable only if you take advantage of the opportunity that writing, as opposed to a spontaneous conversation, offers.
• Taking careful AIM (audience, intent and message) is the focus of media training for anyone who wants to make marketing-oriented business communication a success.

THE NEW CONSUMER’S COURT : CREATIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY :
| |
| For many companies, managing a communication crisis is to have good communication. However, we must not confuse crisis management and crisis communication. Communication Strategies, Systems, and Skills
| |
| Communication is both a symptom and a cause of organization performance problems. Over the years, we've heard hundreds of managers use communication as a vague catchall for every type of organization and team problem imaginable. Generally, the root cause of many "communication problems" was deeper than that.
Poorly designed organizations, ineffective processes, bureaucratic systems, unaligned rewards, unclear customer/partner focus, fuzzy visions, values, and purpose, unskilled team leaders and members, cluttered goals and priorities, low trust levels, and weak measurements and feedback loops all cause communication problems. Whenever a manager contacts us to solve a "communication problem," we always know we have some digging to do.
