LEED-ND a Boon for Large Scale Developments
| |
| LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) is a sustainable development rating system that looks at entire developments rather than individual buildings. As such, it allows a developer to certify their project to LEED standards for a fraction of the cost it would otherwise cost to have each individual building certified. The program is still in it's pilot phase, but savvy developers looking to capture the green market would do well to acquaint themselves with this now if they want to capture the emerging markets of eco-conscious consumers when the projects are complete. |

2.0 The economic context: Support for Growth-oriented Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania, 2005
| |
| Tanzania has a population of just over 37 million, a GDP of US$22 billion, and
GDP per capita of US$610.6 An estimated 51 per cent of the population lives below the
poverty line. Eighty per cent of the country’s poor population live in rural areas,
depending on subsistence agriculture and unable to participate in broader markets. Poor
roads, exorbitantly expensive utilities and prohibitive policies have compounded this
problem, significantly impeding the growth of the economy.7 Agriculture, the mainstay
of the economy, is almost 50 per cent of GDP, and small-scale peasant farmers, who
make up 70 per cent of the population, carry out over 80 per cent of agricultural
activities. About 30 per cent of the population over 15 years of age is illiterate (UDEC,
2002). |

IV. Introduction - MICROFINANCE IN AFRICA: THE MODEL
| |
| The last twenty years have seen significant advances in understanding and providing
financial services to better advance development and eradicate poverty. This includes providing
the financial means to save, access credit, and start small businesses, with the potential to
enhance community development, as well as local and national policy making. When properly
harnessed and supported, microfinance can scale-up beyond the micro-level as a sustainable part
of the process of economic empowerment by which the poor can lift themselves from poverty. |

Community Involvement the Wrong Way
| |
| There are wrong ways to demonstrate community involvement as well. If you volunteer to work on a committee but are never available for meetings, or if you sponsor a little league team and don't show up for games, you're proving yourself to be crass and superficial, probably sucking up the community to get business instead of working for it for altruistic reasons. Consumers are more sophisticated than ever these days. People know the difference between serving the community and serving yourself. If you're not willing to devote honest time and energy to your community, you're better off skipping this weapon and leaving it to the real guerrillas in your community. I just hope for your sake that none are your direct competitors. |

Well it’s like asking somebody why they should use the phone. Why put an ad in the local paper? It’s another way of brand building and it’s a way to stay connected to your community.
