Kraft Buys Into the Mirage of Vendor Rationalization
| |
| In yet another example of the "when will they ever learn" category, About.com's Martin Murray's article "Kraft To Rationalize Vendors" reported that the company "announced that it is planning to cut its supplier base in half, affecting more than 30,000 businesses, but possibly saving Kraft more than $300 million a year."
Putting aside for a moment that enterprise-wide rationalization strategies rarely deliver the sustainable savings that are expected - it would be interesting to see how the $300 million per year number was actually calculated - history has shown that the "sifting" process usually results in a supply base composed of the least desirable vendors. |

Pepsi's Sugar, Childhood Obesity and Twitter's Swiss Cheese
| |
| Having just concluded my second book (which will be released in February), I found it an enjoyable change of pace to once again cover the diverse and at times thought-provoking headlines from the world of social media.
While I must admit that I first heard the news of the Pepsi throwback beverage in which the company announced that it would once again use "real" sugar in its flagship and Mountain Dew brands on the NFL Channel on TV, the social media factor was quite notable. |

MORE HACKING. WHEN WILL IT STOP?
| |
| The simple answer? It won't. To paraphrase Willie Sutton, bank robber, "That's where the money is."
PBS, Sony, Lockheed, Amazon, IMF, US Senate, etc., all announced in 2011 that their systems were hacked. Security specialists are now calling 2011 the year of the hacker. Weak SecureID tokens, malware, password attacks, etc., have all been used. Foreign governments, terrorists and a "hacking collective" called LulzSec have been accused. Recently, the DOD announced that cyber attacks can now be regarded as a military attack with the recourse being military ordnance. |
