Building an Empire: Oprah’s Formative Years

Oprah’s ambition did not diminish with the success of The Oprah Winfrey Show. After her successful acting debut in The Colour Purple (1985), Oprah’s desire to expand into the film and television industry was further fueled. In 1988, Oprah became the third woman in the American entertainment industry to own her own studio when she created Harpo Studios. Oprah’s name read backwards, Harpo is a television and film production, magazine publishing and online media company in one. “I did this to really expand into the areas I wanted to and take over the show to create more time for me to do features and TV specials,” she said.

Doing the Right Thing in Leadership

Many times, doing the right thing has penalties. In leadership, those penalties are magnified because there are less safety nets for team members in leadership positions. People in leadership positions are more visible so when they face issues of ethical penalty, it is more widely known. Although you can never avoid the penalties for doing the right thing, there are a couple of skills that can be embraced to reduce the impact of them.

CANADA IS A COUNTRY OF MEDIOCRITY

| Having been closely watching the American presidential race with a great deal of interest, and have to say being fascinated even enthralled by a number of the speeches, I recalled having read an article in the newspaper last year quoting a study or report that concluded Canada was a “country of mediocrity.” It stated that we are not particularly innovative, creative or willing to step up and take risks to move our society forward and become more of a leader in the world.
Just what is really being talked about here? |

Is Your Mission Statement Written by Dilbert

There’s no more painful corporate ritual than the every-few-years mission statement revision. Here’s where a group of well-meaning people gather for several meetings, markers in hand, to torturously wordsmith themselves into agreement. Does this mission statement typically fire up everyone? Does it fire up anyone? The employees take the t-shirts home to their kids. The gold frames will be filed, roundly. There is no pulse-quickening. Instead, employees, customers, suppliers – everyone except execs and the authors themselves -- see the mission statement as vague, irrelevant, and disconnected from real work. The corporate Ginsu won’t even cut a tomato.

Lesson #2: Prosper From People And Passion

When Laliberté first went on the hiring hunt for a COO, CFO, and vice-president of creation, he decided to do something risky. He was going to offer them a percentage of the company in return for ten years’ employment. How could he be willing to give up a portion of his baby to someone else? How could he be sure the people he hired would be good for the company in five, let alone ten years from then?

Defining a Great Customer Experience

While consulting with a client of mine who was Vice President of Sales for a financial services company, I asked him what he believed his customers thought of his company and how they liked doing business with him. His answer was that his customers loved his company and their experiences were very positive. I then spoke to his sales people to learn more about their existing sales processes as well as other sales-related issues. The sales reps’ feelings were similar to their vice president, although not quite as over-confident and smug. Where they differed related to the fact that they did get some complaints from customers, but not enough for them to believe the customers had anything but excellent experiences with their company.

Surviving a Down Economy: Failure is Not an Option

Every company must take a serious look at their operations and decide if they need to make serious and deeply painful cuts or if their best strategy is to make minor adjustments and simply push forward. Either way, every company owner or president must move forward and lead with a certain conviction and strength of will. That conviction must be felt by every manager and employee in the company.

Obama Tell The Nation's Students

| On Tue, Sep 8, 2009 in a speech reminiscent of the challenges of entrepreneurship, president Obama admonished the young minds to never give up. Once again, president Obama has used his oratorical skill in finally quenched the fire that encapsulate his planned speech to the nation's student and stirred us all to challenge obstacles and actualize our goals. Obama told the students "Take responsibility and refuse to let failure define you"... The president affirmed "If you quit, you are not just quitting on yourself, you are quitting on your country".

Capture Your Competitors' Customers - Even When The Boss Says It Can't Be Done

As a Sales Manager, you often hear your President and other Senior staff members try to bolster the sales staff with confidence that you can win any job. On the other hand, have you ever had the President of your company tell you that there is "NO WAY" that your company could win a major project with seven other major approved suppliers from your industry?

A Century Of Leadership - Good And Bad

It might be simplistic, and I certainly invite discussion, but today I'm ranking the men who've held the office of President since 1911 in terms of how well they did in resisting this "progress" toward socialism/collectivism by their overall support of the U.S. Constitution. My thinking is this: if, as the foremost leader of the federal government, the president can do a good job at fulfilling his/her oath to uphold the Constitution, prosperity generally becomes much easier to obtain in America (and, frankly, elsewhere in the world). When the president fails to protect the Constitution (or, worse, attacks it), he or she aids the progressive march toward collectivism - but pulls the nation away from prosperity and strength....

Who Says There Are No Jobs?

Despite record levels of unemployment, we all know, of course, that our president is on the case. He's the Jobs President... if you don't believe it, just ask him, or any of his sycophantic Demediacrats! But only those who are sufficient Biblical scholars to have heard of Job (with a capital "J") understand that it's really a case of mispronunciation of the vowel....

Blazing Our Own Improvement Path

A timeless principle of inside out leadership is continuous personal growth. When U.S. Supreme Court associate justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., was hospitalized at the age of 92, President Roosevelt went to visit him. He found Holmes reading a Greek Primer. "Why are you reading that?" the president asked. The great jurist replied, "Why, Mr. President, to improve my mind."

The Turkeys We Send To D.C.

You've heard the old joke, the one they tell every year at this time: "Know why they aren't having Thanksgiving in (Chicago)? They sent the turkey to Washington!" Usually, the quip refers to the president - any president - but lately, all the elected federal officials from both parties have been particularly turkey-like....
