| There are some things in life that are supposed to be really complicated; being a parent, learning how to invest and running your own business. When you look at all of these things nothing could be further from the truth. Parents are taught by their children, investors are taught by their experiences and business owners should be taught by a mentor. Often when I look at businesses it is clear that the owners have given up trying to improve their lot in life because they think that it is too complicated an issue to generate more activity. They think they need to be Einstein to invent some radical new way of doing business. Let me give you a few real-life examples of how simple it can be to change the direction of a business.

| Recently I was speaking at a conference in Vancouver when one of the attendees approached me after my speech with an interesting question. He said he was a technology reseller and was getting very serious about bringing his business to the next level. In order for him to focus more on his business, he needed to get out of the role of selling and completely dedicate himself to running his business. His question was, when should he hire his first sales rep. Interesting question since you would think that if he was ready to move forward, as he said, then the answer was simple – hire the sales rep now. But it’s a bit more complicated than that. So here is what I told him. |

| Winning business gets complicated these days when the simple and easy quote gets extended into a tender or even more complicated into a RFP (request for proposal) with a view to getting you as a supplier to supply the specifications of how you are going to meet the customers wants and needs and how much the customer has to invest to get that. |

I’d like to say the answer to this question is “it’s very simple”, but since it really isn’t, I won’t insult your intelligence. If you have not bought or sold a business before, this process will come as a shock to you if you are looking to compare it to house hunting.
In this process, you will be highly analytical and the Seller will be highly emotional. This is their baby that they have built on their own, or like you are attempting to do, have bought from someone else and made it their life. The problem with that is the order should have been reversed. Any time a prospect asks you a question always answer their question first, then go into your explanation. |
