When to Walk Away

Last month at TED2006 I had dinner with a leader of a major technology company, and we discussed the Big Task Summit my firm is hosting in April. On behalf of our clients Kaiser Permanente, Safeway, and Dupont, we’re inviting leaders from 30 other companies to share in some significant research focused on reducing corporate healthcare costs and increasing employee wellness funded by these companies. This executive suggested I invite one of her co-founders, saying,"He really does care about these issues."

Business Is No Guarantee of Riches

| We have all had customers who expected far more than was their due: customers who were unreasonable, overly-demanding, condescending, hard to please and sometimes, even dishonest in their dealings with you. | All the pomp and circumstance of the inauguration is behind us. President Obama is in office and ready to go. Now the countdown begins on The First 100 Days. The First 100 Day Plan sets the tone and focus for an incoming President. It’s a must for the leaders of the free world.
As leaders of our own worlds, shouldn’t we also have a 100 day plan to set the tone and focus for our “term”? Its’ not too late. We are only 28 days into 2009!
The nature of a plan is that it is written down. Writing down your 100 day goals creates tremendous power.

Hardly a day goes by in my executive coaching practice without someone sharing a story with me of how someone at work is driving her nuts and sapping their energy. Very often it's their boss who they experience as being arrogant, condescending, and disrespectful or maybe even a bully. It may be a co-worker who is argumentative with a big ego and thinks he's always right.

Enhancing Your Business Language

What we say matters in communication. How we say it is just as important. According to Albert Mehrabian, 7 percent of face-to-face communication is words (language), and tone (38 percent). Over the telephone, words hold more weight because if we don’t understand the language used (foreign), then tone becomes irrelevant. Monotone languages (like Malay and English) are easier to learn, whereas multi-tone languages (Mandarin, for instance) is harder to master as there are four tones.
