A Silver Century Is Colouring Our Labour Markets

We are on the cusp of a huge change and yet only a few can see it. According to The Conference Board of Canada’s most recent research finding, “A rising proportion of old and “very old” (those 80 years of age or more) citizens will be the defining demographic trend in most countries. A second trend, the rapid fall in fertility rates, will create societies with fewer young people. In Western countries, the labour surplus of the last quarter of the 20th century will become history in the first quarter of the next century.” Indeed, the 21st century will be the silver century worldwide.

PDF Your Board Package

Thankfully I no longer get fedexed binders of board packages from my portfolio companies in advance of a board meeting. Through the modern miracle of email, the board packages show up in my inbox – hopefully a few days (rather than a few hours – or even minutes) before the board meeting. The board packages tend to show up in three different formats – one that is easy to deal with, one that is ok, and one that sucks.

Last week I told you about a recent report from The Conference Board that has a lot of big company CEOs concerned about competition from smaller, more innovative and entrepreneurially-minded companies. To refresh your memory, The Conference Board's CEO Challenge 2004 reported that 87% of the 540 global businesses surveyed cited innovation and enabling entrepreneurship as priorities for their companies, and 31% considered these issues of "greatest concern.”

The Board's Role in Fundraising

“Should my board help me raise funds?” The obvious answer is yes, of course they should! Now comes the hard part. Getting the board to actually raise money is a lot tougher than simply saying they should. Many nonprofits, of all sizes and types of mission, overlook the basic steps necessary to engage the board in effective fundraising.

It compiles important documents into one binder, so they don't waste time and energy looking for what they need in several files or locations. Does your organization have a manual for its board members? |
