How to run a gold medal business
| |
| We are now in the middle of the Olympics and every evening I watch the highlights on TV. I marvel at how the athletes can pull exceptional performance out of the bag, when the pressure is on and there are hundredths of a second between win or lose. So having achieved the heady heights of running for Scotland in athletics here are my five tips to help you run a gold medal business. |

Better Together
| |
| During the Beijing Olympics, beach volleyball players Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh were undefeated in their second gold medal Olympics, with an amazing record of 108 consecutive wins. Watching the advancing duo during the Olympic coverage, I heard commentators mention that when either woman was asked during interviews which one of them was better, they responded, "We're better together." |

The Need to Achieve
| |
| The need to achieve is one of the more visible needs in our society. It fuels performance in the worlds of sports (Gold Medal anyone?), music, politics, media and certainly, business. We all have a need to achieve. At one level or another, everyone wants to succeed at something.
An unfulfilled need for achievement leads to frustration, disappointment and a decreased sense of self-worth. Just think of a simple goal of getting to work on time and the silly red traffic light that prevents you from achieving that goal. Yep, you know the feeling, but these are not feelings we want our team (or ourselves!) to have.

Measure yourself as a manager Go for gold
| |
| Going for gold; what does it mean and what is your ‘gold’?
You can never achieve anything lasting that is not in your nature. You cannot achieve anything that you have not a natural inclination for, with of course the appropriate mental and physical attributes.
A gold medal is nothing without self worth – think of the Olympic athletes, or Tour de France cyclists who cheated, who took performance enhancing drugs, to achieve gold. Gold at any cost is not worth it. Such an attitude demeans the perpetrators and will not allow them to grow as human beings to reach their full natural potential – high, low or indifferent.

The Best Decline Letter of All-Time: Edmund Wilson
| |
| Edmund Wilson, recipient of both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal for Literature, was one of the most prominent social and literary critics of the 20th century.
He realized, like most uber-productive people, that, while there were many behaviors needed to guarantee high output, there was one single behavior guaranteed to prevent all output: |

If you could make twice the income in half the time, would that be as good as gold to you? Would that increase the value of your business? Sounds like a marketing rant, doesn't it? Chicken or Beef?
| |
| As a former national champion Olympic weightlifter, one of my prized possessions is my gold
medal. It is a very special momento to me, which I display in my office. Recently, I was traveling
on an airplane, and I met a unique gentleman seated next to me. If they ever add an Olympic
event called the Marathon Bad Attitude, this gentleman will have a gold medal, too.
Shortly after introducing myself, he told me he didn't like the airline we were flying on, the
seats, the aisles, or our flight attendant. He went on to inform me he didn't like the city we were
in, the airport we were connecting through, or our final destination. I don't think he liked me
either, but we didn't get that far into the conversation.
