The Four Factors of Small Business
We can banter back and forth about numbers and sales approaches for hours, maybe even days, on end and never reach a general consensus as to what the absolute best approach is. True there are many tactics in small business that have worked over and over again, but the real thing boils down to proper management and these four simple rules:

Lesson #4: Create a High Hiring Bar
One of the biggest factors behind the amazing success of Amazon is the people the company has behind it. From day one, Bezos has made it his priority to hire very carefully. He wanted his company to have a long shelf life, and knew that with his staff, he would be creating an enduring culture.

Why Smart Companies Do Dumb Things
Not a day goes by when I don’t ask myself, “Why do smart companies do such dumb things?” We all know companies that cook the books and throw outrageous parties at one end of the spectrum to sell lousy products at the other. A sweeping answer is that companies are run by smart people, and smart people do dumb things as we’ve learned.

Talking to Directors
On Saturday, I called a director at a company I’m on the board of to get a reality check on something that is going on. Ten minutes on the phone solved three things: (1) I was able to road test my idea with someone I respect and (2) I incorporated his feedback into my idea, and (3) we were calibrated.

10 CEO's and the Impact They Have on their Sales Forces
I don't mean to paint a picture that depicts CEO's as the problem, but in some companies, they are the problem. In 9 of the 10 examples I described above they were the problem but unlike this article, it happens in only about 50% of the cases, not 90%. So if you are a CEO or know one, what should you do when getting help for your sales organization?

Top Causes of EMR Implementation Failure
About half of all IT projects fail. Very often, the root cause is the 'people factor.'

Part 2: Anonymous Bloggers
I asked a couple questions yesterday about the rights of anonymous bloggers. I basically wanted to hear what people thought about having companies like Google being forced to disclose the names of anonymous bloggers. The people who commented really hit on some key takeaways from not only this specific case (blogger 'SkanksNYC' and her struggle with being identified) but with other cases as well.

The Social Value of Business
Not so long ago the idea that business should have a social value was seen an anathema.

Why Small Businesses Should Turn to Public Relations During a Down Economy
The common consensus is that during a down economy, failing to market your small business gives your competitors an advantage. Failing to keep your company’s name and its products and services in front of current and prospective customers means that when the economy recovers, it will take you that much longer to re-establish your market presence. Public relations, will allow you to launch your awareness campaign without spending money on production and media buys. Public relations allows small business the time and space to tell your story

Great hires / bad hires: how to tell the difference BEFORE you make the offer
You hire someone. They don't work out. They leave. What is it that you remember and say about them in the past tense? It's rarely the fact that they didn't know how to work the numbers, or that they couldn't put the pieces of a widget together. No, it's almost always their soft skills that generate conversation-their personality, character and values.

Involving your Team in Decisions
As a manager, you have come to realize that decision making is a major part of your job. Some decisions have become second nature, and some require a bit more thought, but you’re able to handle even the toughest of them without much difficulty. As the dynamic of the work place changes, however, decisions will more often be made by teams rather than individuals. Managers will assume the leadership positions in this team decision-making process.

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES MARKETING AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
By John Doerr The science and art of professional services marketing have come a long way in the last few years. It is no longer impossible to find examples of marketing efforts planned well, executed well, and measured well. Yet, in spite of these great strides, I continue to see the same marketing sins committed over and over again to the detriment of the firms and the people steering the marketing ship. What’s frustrating about these sins is that they are all made by intelligent people who have the good sense and ability to avoid them.

STRESS
Many people believe that stress is the demon of modern busy life style. While a certain amount of stress is important to help us to face life’s challenges, too much for too long can be fatal. Numerous studies have shown that stress can impair the body’s ability to fight infections.

A Practical View of Mission and Vision Statements
Vision and mission statements - considered by some a fundamental necessity for every organization, while others view them jadedly as purely an academic exercise. So which is it and why such disparate opinions?

Clear Expectations Lead to Great Partnerships
Create great relationships by starting with clear expectations. In any partnership the expected outcome must be clear to everyone. Settling disputes arising from unclear expectations help attorneys thrive. Misunderstandings cause arguments, and blame abounds. This can be devasting to your business. So, get the expectations clear up front!

While We Were Sleeping: A Story of Misdirected Efforts in the World of Public Sector Procurement Policy
It has been one of the more interesting weeks in the world of Government of Canada procurement policy-making. Despite the numerous “outward facing” storylines that can be pursued in terms of GoC activity, the real action (or lack thereof) is actually within the supplier community itself. I am of course referring to the ongoing inability of associations and lobbying groups to respond to government policy outside of the confines of a narrowly defined platform. A platform I would add in which the tempo is being set by the government.

Going It Alone
In a recent poll by Small Business Guru, 66 percent of small business owners said they were not involved in any sort of peer group. It’s all too easy for small business owners to feel isolated.

Managing Change
Managing Change in an organization is not an option. The only option leaders have is whether to be pro active or reactive. Should you want to learn how to become pro active and effective with Managing Change, review this article

You Are Either Influencing or Being Influenced
In business (and really in life in general), you are either influencing others or being influenced by others.

7.3.3 Reconceptualising the role of training: Mainstreaming skills development for the poor
The whole concept of training should be reformulated more in terms of purposeful skills development based on a variety of modalities/interventions and not just conventional, formal training courses. Because 'training' frequently has pejorative connotations, serious thought should be given to replacing it with other terms. 'Skills development' is generally preferable with 'facilitators' (rather than trainers) in appropriate supporting roles.

Understanding the Basics of Link Exchange
Link Exchanging is the process of exchanging text links between websites. Webmasters exchange links to improve traffic through numerous inbound links or link popularity. Exchanging links is normally a free process (unless you choose to a fee-based link exchange program), making link exchanges cost effective.

Winning New Business: A Beach Head Project
After all your efforts at due diligence, documenting your wide access and deep knowledge of an organization, a beachhead or pilot project will be identified. It may be that a particular line of business has an urgent need. It may be that one area of the business is willing to fund a test. There may be consensus that your solution can be adapted to other lines of business once success is demonstrated

FINDING JOBS THAT OFFER PATHS TO MANAGEMENT
The labor force is expected to hit nearly 200 million by the year 2010. Executive recruiters and career guidance counselors at colleges and universities say the best moves to make are the same time-tested and proven moves that have worked for job-seekers over the past few decades. The general consensus seems to be that a job search required considerable amount of planning, preparation and networking.

How to Spend It: Making the Most of Aid
Africa can absorb and manage increased aid flows. That was the consensus expressed at the plenary session. In his introductory remarks, Graham Mackay, Chief Executive, SABMiller, United Kingdom; Co Chair of the Africa Economic Summit 2005, made clear his view that there is no realistic alternative to continuing aid, with a doubling of flows needed over the next three to five years. This, though, he warned, runs against the present current of declining flows.

7.4.2 Planning and research
There is a strong consensus that demand-driven training requires comprehensive 'labour market information systems' (LMIS) based on market indicators.

Being right
Being right can leave us with a sense of self-affirmation but it may involve conflict with others who also see themselves as right. Being right involves matters like the social consensus, received doctrine, social rules, and necessities for living together, but it is worth reflecting on how far this term can also be a trap. Insistence on being right may not always serve us and there are times when it is more useful to let go and allow another possibility to emerge.

The Four Faces Of Leadership
Leadership, that is consistently making the numbers, consists of four competencies represented by the acronym VIMP. These competencies are vision, interaction, motivation, and politics. Other aspects of leadership involve grasping the "rhythm and beat" of an organization, learning how to manage by walking or flying around, keeping employees "brains in the game," maintaining consensus in organizational change situations, and always being ready to share financial success.

Consensus Building Can Be Too Much of a Good Thing
There are a lot of upsides to building consensus in organizations, and generally, it tends to be very good for company culture and morale. However, it does have its downside too in that it also increases the chances that nothing will get done. Now, I’m all for enlisting the opinions of others, and happen to personally enjoy weighing multiple perspectives against one another in order to learn something new or see something in a way I hadn’t seen it before. But sometimes instead of helping, the exercise of pursuing “agreement,” does more to hold things back. Why? Because it’s not very often that everyone agrees, especially as the size of a group increases. So while “consensus” is “in” and considered politically correct, it can also be equally as unrealistic a goal if it is not exploited properly.

Buying Facilitation® and Sales: the dynamic duo
Sales is a great model for understanding need, discovering problems, and introducing/placing solutions. Buying Facilitation® is a great model for helping buyers navigate their behind-the-scenes political and relationship issues that must achieve buy-in before they get consensus to purchase a solution – you know, that mysterious stuff buyers go through privately while we sit and wait for them to buy. By using both two models consecutively, selling and buying becomes a very different experience than the one we are accustomed to: the timing is different, the skills are different, the outcomes are different, the relationship is different and the competitive and money factors fade away.

Achieving Brand Consensus
Successful branding, or re-branding, requires that key stakeholders are involved in a democratic process to agree on what the new brand will be. However, working with every stakeholder throughout the process is simply impossible. Read this Research Note to learn how you can achieve consensus on your brand. Use Demand Metric's downloadable Branding Selection Tool to help you provide choices for your stakeholders that are equally satisfactory for the brand champion.
