Making Leadership Actionable: What We Are Learning and How We Can Use It

Much of the popular and academic literature on leadership has led to advice about what is required for effective leadership. This advice is usually flawed in that it does not provide guidance for how to learn to effectively apply the advice or because the advice is based on the practices of an individual in a specific context, a context that may or may not apply to the learner’s situation. An approach to leadership development based on seeing leadership as an emergent phenomenon, rather than just something that an individual does, is suggested.

Prospects Are Like Children

The creativity/business conundrum

The concept of creativity is an abstract one, at best. The dictionary tells you that when you ask for creativity, you can expect to see “the ability to use the imagination to develop new and original ideas or things, especially in an artistic context.” This is all well and good if you’re in the market for something astonishing to frame and hang on your wall, but in the context of business design it falls somewhat short of adequate.

When coaching abrasive managers and executives I have discovered that in some cases they are only abrasive in the context of an overly passive culture. Before labelling a problem employee or manager, examine the context of the department, division or company.

Kinetic Typography: A Killer Web Video Marketing Technique

Kinetic Typography penetrates the consciousness because the dynamically presented spoken and written words act as mnemonic devices reinforcing each other. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the visuals alone will make up for any deficit in the script. Your words create a language framework that defines your brand; it creates the context within which you can communicate with your audience; and it allows you to take ownership of those words thereby limiting your competitions’ ability to feed off your marketing efforts. In short, words have meaning, words can move you, move you to action, and isn’t that what marketing is all about?

High- and Low-Context Cultures and Power Distances

Literature provides argument that cross-cultural communication is a complex matter. Edward Hall argued much of the human communication is non-verbal and always follows cultural and contextual patterns (Katz, 2006). Hall further argues that there are two key concepts: High-Context v Low-Context and Polychronic v Monochronic (Babel, n.d.).
