Creating sustainable competitive advantage; in a modern context
| |
| We are in the middle of one of the worst modern recessions in living memory and most companies are trying to focus, not just on how to survive, but on how to grow their businesses in the long term. Many companies have suffered from the effects of reduced turnover, increased costs and ever greater competition. It would be easy to be full of doom and gloom and to focus purely on survival but that would be to miss a great opportunity – how to prepare for the end of the recession and what comes next. Not all companies are doing badly! Some of those who were focused and well run have survived and come through the initial crisis relatively unscathed e.g. HSBC and Santander. Do you understand what resources you have and how they can be used to gain future competitive advantage? Can you inspire your stakeholders with your strategic messages? |

When articulated and implemented consistently, values reduce the need for close supervision, engender trust and co-operation with suppliers and customers, and raise performance. Great leaders recognize this. That is why they commit substantial personal time to articulation and implementation of values. They are also good at mastering paradoxes of values. |

Selection Considerations for Leadership Development/Coaching
| |
| My research and that of others has found that leadership development and succession planning is by nature a long-term effort and it is far from being a risk-free activity. Additionally, like most things of importance, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Too often organizations jump into leadership development and succession programs without giving thought to key issues and the criteria to be used. |

Symptoms of Corporate Strategy Misalignment
| |
| Strategy misalignment is subtle and sometimes difficult to spot. Yet without a properly aligned corporate strategy, you are likely to introduce a serious dose of chaos into the organizational environment.
Corporate strategy is the blend of strategic goals that support the mission and vision of an organization. When a corporate strategy is aligned, the key outcomes (strategic goals) of the organization are united with operations and execution tactics. In other words, all parts of the organization’s eco-system (the sum of internal and external functions of an organization’s environment) are moving in the same well-defined direction. When strategy is misaligned operational initiatives are out of sync with the strategic goals of the organization, mission drift occurs within the operations of the business, |

Realizing Your Entrepreneurial Vision
| |
| Question: Can you become a successful entrepreneur?
Answer: Yes, but you can’t do it alone.
Entrepreneurs begin by creating a vision. The vision states what your company does, why it is in business and what it will achieve. From this vision, a company strategy emerges. It describes the actions the company will take to make the vision a reality. Your company’s future pain and success is a function of 1) whether your vision serves the needs of the marketplace and 2) how successfully your company implements its strategy.
