Great writing, unfiltered
| |
| Here's what used to happen: A publisher had a magazine, or a big pile of stamps and a mailing list. She'd hire a copywriter or a stable of them. Sometimes the combination worked out and end up with the New Yorker or LL Bean. But other times (most of the time) it's just a waste. Either the stuff that goes out is lousy or the great writers don't get heard. (More than 70,000 books got published in the US last year... how many have you read?) |

Gossip
| |
| We frequently hear little jokes about gossip, like the two people who were talking and one said, "I can't tell you any more. I've already told you more than I heard." In that line is much of the tragedy about gossip, which can and often has destroyed a person's reputation. Gossip always damages relationships and specifically with the person you are gossiping about. For example, once you have said something unkind about a person, you will feel uncomfortable around him or her and your relationship will suffer. |

Finding the Right Fit: A Leadership Selection Model for the Redesigned Organization
| |
| Over the past several years, companies across every industry have sought ways to improve profitability and service while decreasing costs. As labor expenses usually account for the single largest segment of the company's budget, downsizings are one of the first options that senior executives consider when trying to cut costs. The Lost Art of Connecting
| |
| No doubt, we live in a mega-connected world. . Linked in, Face book, three email accounts, blogs galore, Blackberries, instant messaging, real-time stock updates, photo downloads from outer space. Most of us are so connected we couldn’t disconnect if we tried (lest we stare down the dark tunnel of technology withdrawals). But I am talking about connecting vs. being connected (read wired). |

When Was The Last Time You Measured The Effectiveness Of Your Small Business
| |
| YOUR PERCEPTION VERSUS REALITY
In today’s complex business environment there are too many demands on our time. New technology is available to
streamline procedures and information gathering yet we have become a slave to this technology. As we become
familiar with the new hardware and software, we rely on the information they make available and consider it the
best approach to analyzing our business. Less and less time is dedicated to hands on, real world analysis of our
business. Although the technology provides us with quantitative information and trend analysis, it cannot sense a
decline in the way we are actually conducting business. We have a snapshot of today’s reality with no looking glass
into the future. Is your VISION of the company being diluted once it reaches the frontline of your company? |

What Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle Means for You
| |
| Essentially, Heisenberg determined that the mere observation of a particle causes it to then move in an unpredictable manner. I started relating this to us. After all, aren’t we a bundle of particles? Do we, by simply observing ourselves and each other, alter our paths in surprising ways?
If observing my thoughts changes my subsequent actions, then I might want to be more thoughtful about what I think. So I came up with a list of Ten Thoughts to Invite Surprising Changes to my own bundle of particles. |

Vendor/consultant fees: Value for money?
| |
| IN MY RECENT TRAVELS presenting the Changing Face of Procurement conference series, a number of interesting trends began to emerge based on the feedback from the majority of those in attendance. Beside a growing cynicism in the "reports" that are published by organizations such as Aberdeen or Gartner, the most prevalent belief is that the cost for initiatives such as the recent $24 million spent in just 9 months by the federal government on AT Kearney are largely based on supporting the vendor's (or consultant's) sizeable infrastructure. In short, the costs are not a true reflection of the service, application or results vendors are providing. With a 75 to 85 percent rate of e-procurement initiative failure, it is hard to argue this point. |

Are You Fulfilled
| |
| Dear Jane,
How can I figure out whether I am doing what makes me happy? What are some of the symptoms of unhappiness, or must I wait for a life-threatening situation?
I wrote my popular self-help book, Enough Is Enough!, to help others avoid having to go through a life-threatening situation in order to wake up to your spirit’s calling.
If you are having to ask yourself if you are happy, then you probably aren’t. Perhaps you haven’t yet had the satisfaction that goes with fulfilling your spirit’s purpose, so you don’t know what benchmark to compare your feelings with.
The symptoms of endurance or a less-than-thriving life are discussed in depth in my book. I will give you a short list here that you should find helpful: |

ReKindling Your Passion for Your Work and Your Life
| |
| Dear Jane,
I wake up every morning wondering how I got to where I am today: bored, dreading my responsibilities, and numb. How did this happen and what do I do about it?
Most of us have woken up occasionally to a feeling of dread or anxiety, wishing we were facing a different day ahead of us. But if this is how you feel most mornings, wishing you had a different life, you are suffering from burnout. Burnout is the result of enduring for too long and is debilitating to your spirit. The good news is that it’s curable. |

Down with Stress/Up with Thriving
| |
| First of all, stress is a catchall phrase and not so useful when we’re looking to thrive and create a more extraordinary life. Instead, I recommend asking yourself whether you are Enduring or Persevering. Both may feel stressful. But Enduring leads to the blahs and worse while Persevering leads to thriving. Here are just some of the symptoms of Endurance: anxiety, addiction, boredom, cynicism, depression, hopelessness, helplessness, illness, “Is that all there is?” lack of energy, procrastination, resentment, ruts, and “Why me, Lord?” If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, then I encourage you to consider that you are in some Endurance. |

You Don't Need An Expert
| |
| You don't need an employee engagement expert to confirm what you already know and Gallup polling substantiates: the majority of employees are disengaged at work. You don't need an employee survey to tell you why discretionary efforts are tamed, passions for work are fleeting, and ideas are tethered. And you don't need a consultant to explain why cynicism is up, enthusiasm is down, and trust is the new workplace currency.

Being in The Zone, being in The Flow is Being Charismatic
| |
| This week I delivered a half-day session on Charismatic Leadership to The Ella Foundation, established by Brian Chernett, created to inspire more leaders in the not for profit sector to be more effective and successful. Nearly 30 leaders from different registered charities participated in a way that was subtly different to leaders within the corporate sector. These men and women showed a real passionate intensity for their cause that was truly inspiring. Their minds were open and receptive to my techniques meaning that the exercises we did regarding energy were really advanced because their attitude to learning was untainted by cynicism. |
