Leadership Assessment #15 – Make Good Decisions
There are hundreds of assessments for leaders. The content and quality of these assessments vary greatly. You can spend a lot of time and money taking surveys to tell you the quality of your leadership. There are a few leading indicators that can be used to give a pretty good picture of the overall quality of your leadership. These are not good for diagnosing problems or specifying corrective action, but they can tell you where you stand quickly. Here is one of my favorite measures. It is the ability to consistently make good decisions.

Is Your Business Ready for 2010?
Over the next few weeks, anything can change in your business. You’ll find that people often make decisions about what they will and won’t be doing in the new year. You will want to make sure that your business not only survives but thrives next year.

Why do we put off the really important things?
You're busy all the time, too busy. And yet, there are many really important things you never seem to have time to get around to. I'm a NY Business Coach and entrepreneurs and business owners use me regularly to: organize their business, help them manage their time efficiently, make better decisions, and, yes, make much more money. Have a look at my article and see if you, like so many of the rest of us, often fall into the "Not Urgent, But Important" trap.

Is There A 'Magic Bullet' To Your Success?
The decisions we make every day and every minute affect us, you don't want you to look back in 10 - 20 years and ask yourself where did that time go,

Thriving in the Gap
Making the best of where you are with what you have can be a challenge these days with the pressure of meeting setting and meeting sales goals, retaining talent and clients. How can we thrive in the gap between delusional optimism and paralyzing panic? The key is to stay where the action is and that is in the middle between these two extremes. You can't do it alone so put people around you that don't think like you do. People who can challenge and optimize your thinking. Make the most of what opposing ways of seeing it give to you and you will find that your networking is more robust, developing your employees is more effective, solutions drive more sustainable results. In short you will make better decisions that serve in the short, mid and long term.

Master Your Game: Designing an Effective Meeting Agenda
An agenda planning session should occur prior to every meeting. Just as an architect wouldn't dream of showing up at a construction site without a well-thought out design, facilitators need to create their own blueprints for each session. Meetings can be a waste of time and energy if no one is prepared and participants are forced to make decisions without adequate information. Last month, we discussed meeting management styles. This month, we discuss the effective agenda. Use The Agenda As A Strategic Tool

Five Leadership How-Tos for Recession Survival
We're in the midst of the worst economic crisis in decades, and many people in leadership positions haven't seen anything like it before. As an executive coach, I know that leaders often make decisions out of fear of what could happen instead of crafting a plan to ensure that everyone stays on track through the bad times. Surviving a recession can feel a bit like sailing without sails, so here are a few tips to help you stop, think and weather the crisis.

Management Courses Morph into Leadership Development
Bosses who receive rave reviews search for the transformational aspects of working with direct reports rather than just the transactional “telling them what to do” side. They become a blend of the best of all worlds; leading from the heart and intuition coupled with logic and decisions of the mind.

Clarity + Decisions + Actions = Results
Are some areas of your life going too slowly for you? Are you feeling stagnate or stressed? Read on to learn about this process.

When I Ask Your Opinion
It's not about only what you know or that your opinion is the best or only opinion; it's about how to integrate your knowledge and many opinions into a greater whole. There's a reason why you're heading up an organization, even if you run a solopreneurial business. What's it going to be? Playing nice or succeeding?

Don't Panic or Go Into Survivor Mode
When making business or major decisions in your life, it is not wise to make decisions when you are in a state of panic.

Warning! Values May Be Detrimental to Your Organization’s Health
What percent of your employees can identify your organization’s values? How many of those individuals can tell you what each value “looks like” in terms of their own performance? Unless you are able to answer nearly 100%, you may want to consider taking these steps to improve the health of your organization!

Guidelines for Allocating Scarce Resources
Scarce resources are a fact of business life. In the wake of devastating budget cuts, furloughs, and/or layoffs, however, “normal” levels of scarcity have been exacerbated. The question for many organizations has become, “How do we move forward from here most effectively?” I recommend to my clients that they begin by identifying some crucial information that will guide their subsequent actions and decisions.

Main Components of Creativity Management
Creativity management is not only a new way of solving problems and taking decisions, but is a new way of looking at the world and various aspect of life

Entrepreneurial Objectivity
For most of us, it's obvious that the bulk of the decisions we make on a daily basis are based upon the summation of our previous experience. Then combined with some sort of reactive observation. “That looks hot, I once was burned, don’t touch it.” A rather simplistically calculated decision to a situation, correct? There are a lot of philosophical explanations to this phenomenon, (of which I have no desire whatsoever to regurgitate.) However, the idea of understanding, evaluating and augmenting our decision making process, is quite possibly one of the most effective, yet difficult things to do.

Take Control and Increase Growth – Article 3
The purpose of this article is to help business owners understand the key daily decisions that influence dependence on external funding and either limit or expand the growth potential of a business. There are essentially 4 decisions: 1. cash; 2. people; 3. strategy; and 4. execution. This article (#3) addresses strategy, which is the primary driver of growth. If you are not growing in the top tier of your industry segment you have a strategy problem. In this article are ideas to help you develop your strategy.

Making Your Decision Making Much More Effective
As managers, we make decisions all the time. Some are perfect and others, well, maybe 'could do better'. So, how can we all make better decisions then...

Are You Sending Mixed Motivation Messages?
It is so easy to send mixed messages to an employee. The best way to discuss this is to share a real live example where a client hired me to coach a partner. Then my client unwittingly made several decisions that totally demotivated his employee.

Take Control and Increase Growth - Article 1 of 4
The purpose of this article is to help business owners understand the key daily decisions that influence dependence on external funding and either limit or expand the growth potential of a business. There are essentially 4 decisions: 1. cash; 2. people; 3. strategy; and 4. execution. Article 1 of 4 will focus on cash.

Employee Motivation - 5 Steps to Apply When Mistakes Occur
CEOs and other leaders continue to recycle employees who failed to make perfect decisions and act properly every time. On the surface you might be thinking, how big was the mistake? Many of these executives also use the cliché, “We pay them the big bucks NOT to make mistakes.” Blame is typically being placed on the wrong people. Worse yet, the leaders who don’t tolerate errors typically hold people to standards higher than those that they themselves achieve and attainable by less than 1% of the population, if that much. These are the very same leaders who cannot understand why their employees are not motivated, the same leaders who typically offer better-than-average compensation to keep people, yet still find it difficult to retain or attract top talent.

Have Your Goals and Achieve Them Too!
You see it every day in your daily lives and particularly at year-end, with all of the New Year resolutions and business plans. Next year you are going to do all of those things you have never done, and more. Or maybe you just want to get back to where you used to be. You set goals for some really important reasons: - Keep you on target - Make better decisions - Keep you focused - Increase self-motivation - Develop self-confidence

Never Leave a Meeting Feeling Good
Do your meetings result in everyone feeling good after they leave? Does very little get done in your meetings? If so, your meetings function like most, and they are probably worthless! Most often leaders are concerned with there being too many meetings, or meetings being too long, or some other wrong measurement. I would like to suggest that you change your measurement systems. For example, a good leading indicator that something important is being discussed is conflict. Other indicators of good meetings are the number of decisions made and the number of people held accountable for decisions made at the prior meetings. These are real indicators that your meetings are worthwhile. If you have a really good meeting, then everyone leaves feeling uncomfortable because there is so much more to be done, and they have a stake in it!

Are You Giving Away Your Personal Power?
Are you so wrapped up in the day to day stuff, you forget to pay attention to the impact of your decisions?

Decision Making vs. New Year's Resolutions
Everyone wants to have a successful year. And we all know to do that we have to set out some type of goals or resultions or decisons to do that. Let's make this year the year we overcome the obstacles of not achieveing or even not setting New Year's resolutions by reframing the whole process.

Setting the Cornerstone--The Purpose of Your Life
Creating the life you love all starts with having a solid foundation, where the cornerstone is to understand your life’s purpose. Learn here how to learn what is important to you and pursue your goals with these four simple steps.

Buying Decisions: What Happens Behind-The-Scenes
For some reason, it's very difficult for sales people to think beyond 'need' and 'solution:' We tend to think that because the buyer's need matches our solution, and because we're professionals who 'care,' the only thing buyers need to do is choose our solution. But if it were that easy, buying decisions would get made more often in our favor. We certainly would not lose as many sales as we do. The problem is that the buying decision is so, so much more complex than we can imagine as we stand on the outside looking in. Sales mysteriously treats an Identified Problem (my word for 'need') as if it were an isolated event. But it's not. There are ramifications to any change, and the ramifications are ones only buyers can see from the inside and we will never be privy to.

DECISION MAKING: How, Exactly, Do We Decide?
Columbia University is just beginning scientific experiments on my theories of how decisions actually get made, and how, or if, decisions can be influenced. I contend that there is a specific process the brain uses to make decisions, and this can be influenced by sequentially directing the brain to different sub/unconscious criteria.

Decisions Are Never Emotional
Imagine if instead of believing that unexpected decisions are emotional, we assume they have a very specific reason, even if we don’t understand or agree. Then what? Is it just easier to believe the other person to be irrational? Do you remember, back in the day, when docs said that women suffering from PMS were hysterical and they needed to have a hysterectomy (that’s where the word ‘hysterical’ comes from btw)? They didn’t understand the physiology underlying the physical issues, and relegated the problem to emotions.

Marketing: New Ideas For A New Market
Now that we are all famous, what happens when we all have access and input to the same data? How do we find our target markets? And how does marketing change given our murky demographics? I have answers, and I’ll begin by being a bit provocative: information doesn’t teach someone how to make a decision. Indeed, I believe that ‘information’ is useful only when people have already decided they are actively seeking a new solution. It’s certainly useless as a means to convince someone to do something they weren’t going to do, don’t believe in, don’t understand, or who have people and policy hurdles that created a status quo that needs collaborative decisions and systems change to move forward.

Characteristics of Third Generation Leadership & 3G Leaders
This is a world in which people are almost addicted to learning new things – especially if they can help them with social networking. This is a world in which people are very aware of the vast amount of information available and in which they have to make daily decisions as to what information to accept and what to reject. This is a world in which, fundamentalists of any form aside, people are increasingly willing to grapple with complexity and seek new answers to age-old issues. This is a world in which we need 3G Leaders.

Is Your Business Color-Blind? - Mash Bonigala
If your company is like many others, you may have chosen your color palette based on what you personally find pleasing. While your opinion as a small business owner certainly matters, color can be not just a pretty visual, but a subconscious way of communicating with and invoking emotion in your customers. Here are the colors most often used in logo design and business brands, along with what they convey. By understanding the power of color in logo design, you can make logo and branding decisions that help ensure the future viability of your company.

The Power of Prayer
Recently my son had quite a health scare.

Five Easy Questions That Should Be Asked at Every Job Interview
The interview process, if used effectively, can be a great tool to find out more about a job candidate and to obtain information needed to make hiring decisions, However, it is also a powerful opportunity to ask “due diligence” questions for the purpose of uncovering any “red flags” that may show the candidate is unqualified, unfit or dishonest. These five interview questions, if asked of all candidates, can go along ways towards protecting employers from the legal and financial nightmare of a bad hiring decision.

Overcoming Adversity - Don't Miss the Turning Point!
Adversity in life is generally an unwelcome visitor however all of life's challenges provide you with opportunities to learn and grow. Within the process it's important to look out for a turning point, a place that is a signal in the overcoming adversity journey. This is something that will provide additional hope that you can overcome challenges. This just, might be a place where you go from inaction to action or something prompts you to make some new decisions. Sometimes you are aware of it, whilst other times it is more subtle and things start to move and change in surprising ways. I'd like to share one of my turning points which became a defining moment.

Two Types of Decisions: Buy-IN, and BuyING
Recently someone told me that Buying Facilitation® is an old concept, that its been written about in books since sales books have been written, and that he's been helping buyer's buy for decades. Of course he has, except that he, like the entire sales field, has a paltry success rate - certainly under 10%. Why? If the seller understands the need, has the right solution, and has a great relationship, what's stopping the buyer from buying as often as they should? Why isn't the buyer deciding on the obvious solution?

Closing for a Commitment or Settling for an Agreement?
There comes a time when all your hard work and preparation come together, and the time is right to go for closure! This is the moment you go for commitment. In business, whenever people interact, they make decisions ― a decision to talk, a decision to listen, a decision to act on a recommendation. Ideally, as a leader you want your followers to make decisions that are both well-informed and high in confidence. The reason for this is two-fold. First, the higher your followers are in confidence when they reach a final decision, the more effort and quality they will put into carrying through that decision.

Ain't Nobody's Business but Your Own
This is you, this is your decision. Business and personal intersect when releasing the dream. A good plan can keep you from a nightmare. The steps we see working well for both current and future owners includes understanding how to best value, market and manage the transaction. You consider numerous liquidity options and make decisions based on your defined goals. Align yourself with a discreet advisor in making these decisions affecting your proceeds. Prepare yourself when you plan to sell your business.

Evaluating Candidate Interviews
So you have just finished a round of 5 interviews, and most of the candidates seem to be competent enough; how are you going to select the right person? With so many factors influencing hiring decisions, and so much risk of making the wrong hire, you need a method for quickly, effectively, evaluating each of the candidates. Use Demand Metric’s Interview Evaluation Matrix to eliminate the guesswork.

Assuming You Know THE Answer Can Limit You
At one time or another, either consciously or unconsciously, each of us has explored questions such as: Who am I? What is possible for me? How do I fit in? And gathered information until we had what we perceived to be THE Answer and then lived our lives from that perspective, seldom checking to see if other answers are possible and discounting any information to the contrary.

Make That Decision
Often, we or our subordinates seem to have trouble making decisions. And often that costs.

All Decisions Involve Change Management: an insurance case study
Without buy-in, nothing changes. If the group or person deemed change necessary, it would have happened already. So whatever state the status quo is in is the preferred state: no matter what you think is wrong, or how your wonderful solution would make it better, it ain’t going to happen unless the status quo is willing to change. And change means change management is necessary.

Change is Good!
Change is a word that oftem brings fear into the hearts and minds of many. Debbie Lessin has never been one to fear change. But she readily admits that the decision to move her CPA office after 23+ years was a huge change and a decision that was a long time in coming. Having survived the move, she recalls how she approached this move methodically, professionally and with a whole lot of balance. As you read the aritcle, remember that the change doesn't have to be about moving an office per se. Think about any change that you are putting off or may not even realize that you need. Change is good. And good change is great! And that's exactly how Debbie feels about the move to her new office space. Some decisions take time. By taking her time to find the right space, Debbie's new work environment is everything she could have hoped for!

Entrepreneurs Mindset – Learning For Yourself, Thinking For Yourself & Accepting Responsiblity
I would never have described myself as having an entrepreneurial mindset but, I have always been the type of person who likes to learn how to do things properly and to make my decisions based on my own feelings/thoughts rather than someone else’s.

Resistance to change: inexplicable, irrational, and real
When it's time for us to change, we must make sure that we somehow integrate the new with the decisions and behaviors we've already created and maintain daily. Until or unless we are able to figure out how to reconfigure our rules and roles and relationship and ego issues, we will take no action at all - even if it means sticking with something that's less than successful. That's right: even with a 7% closing ratio, many many sales professionals would prefer to continue doing what they are doing rather than change and mess up what they have grown accustomed to and have rationalized and internalized.

Teaching Professionalism
According to a new poll conducted for the Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) at York College of Pennsylvania, nearly 60 percent of the hiring decisions for new college graduates are based on assessments of the applicants’ professionalism.

13 Questions Every Home-Based Business Owner Must Ask Themselves
Below we've identified thirteen decisions you should make to set up a comprehensive home office business system that's tailored to your unique preferences and work demands. There's no one right answer, but most people run into trouble if they haven't addressed the issue each of the following questions raises. So this will help you decide:

Lesson #1: Keep The Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive
“In the 1970s, I filled my ranks with managers from all different walks of life who generally were very savvy to the ways of big business,” recalls Vernon, “and they almost killed us.”

Lesson #5: Build a Strong Team
Reflecting upon his success, Murdoch commented, “I feel proud but it’s been a long and bumpy ride.” It was not a ride that Murdoch took alone. From his early days working on Adelaide’s The News to his current position at the top of the multi-billion dollar News Corp., Murdoch has learned the importance of surrounding himself with qualified people who can help him achieve his goals.

Lesson #5: Ignore the Critics
“When you innovate, you've got to be prepared for everyone telling you you're nuts,” says Ellison. Indeed, there has never been a single point in Ellison’s career where one critic or another did not lambast him for his business strategy. But, learning to ignore them was an art Ellison would soon master

In His Father’s Shoes: Watson Jr. Takes Over IBM
When Watson Jr. took on the top position at his father’s company, he did so at a time when it was devoted to electromechanical punch card systems. Watson Sr. had always rejected electronic computers believing they were expensive and unreliable. Watson Jr. wanted to change all of that.

Lesson #2: Growth Happens in Bounds and Leaps – of Faith
Jeff Bezos is a risk taker. There are no other words to describe the man who put everything he had into a venture that many said was doomed to failure, even calling it Amazon.toast for the company’s first five years. Bezos might not have known what the future held in store for him and his small garage-based start-up, but he was sure about one thing: “I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.”

Lesson #4: Plan Today So You Can Act Fast Tomorrow
Schwab took his company from being a one-man startup to the world’s largest financial services firm in record-setting time. How? Early on, Schwab decided to establish a number of guiding principles that would allow him to make quick decisions. He believed that by following a strict process and adhering to strict requirements, he would be well-prepared ahead of time in order to act with lightening speed.

Lesson #4: “There are no shortcuts”
“Occasionally great wealth is created in a short amount of time, but it’s through a lot of luck in those situations,” says Hastings. “You just have to think of building an organization as a lot of work. It may or may not turn into great wealth.”

Do Your Values Drive or Derail Leadership? Part 2
Our values affect the way we conduct business too. For example, a leader who grew up during the depression and values security will make low-risk investments whereas someone a bit younger may be less risk-averse. One business owner may value being debt-free while another business owner may believe debt is a necessity for growth.

Resolving Your Business Finance Emotional Hot Buttons
One of the areas that perpetually pushes buttons in business is finances. Whether you are a micro-enterprise owner or hold a position in a large company, the decisions you have to make about finance can cause huge emotional reactions. Money is a hot topic for most of us and our conditioning around it impacts how we view it and the results we get.

Who sets your agenda?
In the States, today is one of those weird pre-holiday days.

Personality
My dictionary tells me that personality is the "personal or individual quality that makes one person be different and act differently from another." Personality is "the total physical, intellectual and emotional structure of an individual, including abilities, interests and attitudes." Personality is the sum total of all of our qualities. With this in mind, let's explore the benefits and ramifications of a pleasing personality.

The Big Dip: Ten Questions with Seth Godin
Seth Godin provided me with a copy of his new book, The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick), and I think it will definitely get people to think about life. To give you a taste of what’s in the book, here’s an interview with Seth about the topics of perseverance and quitting.

Your Future
Many years ago as a young, aspiring speaker, I heard an older speaker who was quite philosophical say that you are where you are because that's exactly where you want to be. I thought about his statement, decided it was the "wisdom of the ages" and verbalized it in my own presentations. Over a period of time, a series of events took place that convinced me that his statement was not true in my case. I was broke, in debt and down in the dumps. I wanted to be prosperous and excited about my future. It came through loud and clear that I was where I was and what I was because of the decisions and choices I had made in my life.

Styles of Leadership
I think the candidates on last season's The Apprentice were the best we have had so far. They were intelligent and resourceful, and most of them possessed strong leadership skills.

Why Do People Refer?
I get asked the question above plenty. The answer is really easy: People refer people, products, services and companies because they like to, it makes them feel good, it's just human nature.

I'm just not that kind of person...
Craig writes in with a story about a Dyson vacuum.

Probably not stupid
Your difficult boss, customer, prospect, voter, student... probably not stupid, probably just uninformed. There's a huge difference.

Is Your Purpose Patent Still Pending?
Lots of business owners sit around the office tinkering with the notion of that one great innovation to be patented on the road to riches. Well, I think we’ve all got a patent in us but, for many, that patent remains forever pending. The patent I’m referring to is the “purpose patent” – your personal connection to work the serves a deeper purpose. That patent doesn’t need approval from the USPTO, it only needs approval from you.

Why Sales Managers need to work on the business, not just in the business
Playing “catch up” is a common challenge for organisations of all sizes. Whether you have enjoyed a period of rapid growth and prosperity, or encountered some unexpected obstacles or losses, with little warning, businesses can discover that their decision making and activity has become very reactive. Too much time is spent putting out spot fires and reacting to situations, while too little time is spent on pro-active and strategic activities. The very real and legitimate day to day business pressures result in many (if not most) decisions being made on an ad-hoc basis, with each one disconnected from the next.

Behavioral Styles and Communication patterns
Each of us has a different way of communicating to others. It isn’t just your words that deliver your message. In fact the words may be least important. Your tone of voice and body language are a big part of communicating. It is your behavioral style that others interpret and make decisions on. How do you find out about your style?

Top Ten Business Systems Necessary to Run a Business Profitably
Good systems support the business owner by helping him/her to make good decisions. Every business has several key systems that when run properly will help the business to be profitable. Monitoring the systems and watching key measurements in the system will help the owner to know when to make changes and when to keep doing the same things. Having an operations manual for your business will allow you to have one place to go when you want to redefine a process or update a key measure. The operations manual is also helpful to new employees as they begin to learn how your business works.

Help for Achieving Your Goals: The 9 C's
Humans seem to be naturally goal oriented. We look to the future as the place where we can have more of what we want in our business and our lives. Goals are what help us bring the future into focus. By knowing where we're going, it makes decisions a lot easier and produces better results. In addition to determining where we are now versus where we want to be at some specified time in the future, I find it's helpful to understand the goal achievement process in terms of sequential conceptual stages. This offers another way to look at what might otherwise seem straightforward and colorless.

Two Steps to a Winning Strategy
Before considering a Strategy, you need to know what you're trying to accomplish. Think about the Priorities facing your business n0w and select one or more SMART Goals, with a target date for achieving each one of them. I find it's easiest to work in 90 day (quarterly) planning segments. Creation of a Strategic Plan involves only two basic steps: analyze pertinent information and make decisions.

The Dreaded Elevator Speech – Important for Job Seekers and Attorneys
Life today is hectic and so is business. Everyone is in search of ways to make quick decisions on minimum information. Whether you have a business, work in a business or are looking for work you need to have a quick way to introduce yourself and grab someone’s attention. Hence – the elevator speech or the 30 second introduction.

Flipping the Coin for Top Talent - How Well Are You Hiring?
How do great leaders of successful companies spend half of their time? They spend it on people: recruiting new talent, picking the right people for positions, grooming young stars, developing global managers, dealing with under-performers, and reviewing the entire talent pool. Everyone agrees that talent is an important competitive advantage, but surprisingly, three out of four companies do not make their talent management programs a high priority. Hiring practices often are random and decisions often are based on intuition. In many cases, hiring decisions have success rates similar to flipping a coin!

Recession-Proof Your Business
In a recession you face one of two decisions. Do you stay the course "as is" or do you make a big change? Can you reinvent your business and focus squarely on ideas on how to drive revenue? Victor Cheng, author of The Recession-Proof Business, analyzed the last 12 recessions going back 136 years in US economic history. He was looking for examples of companies that had begun as small businesses during a recession, depression or economic panic and generated significant sales in a down economy. He discovered dozens of such cases, and Cheng developed four crucial guidelines to reinvent and recession-proof your business.

Character and Competence
When hiring for and growing employees within an organization, it is essential to consider both character and competence traits. The single best strategy for helping a company improve results starts with hiring the right people for the right business needs. It is far better to leave a vacancy unfilled rather than fill just because “any warm body in the chair will help.” The pain and cost of making poor hiring decisions is unnecessary. Sprinkle the hiring process with a bit more deliberation and patience and watch the long-term results take an upward course.

Which Salespeople Use Bad Judgement and Burn Bridges?
You want your salespeople to get decisions instead of taking stalls, put-offs and objections. Some of your salespeople are better at this than others. I've written extensively about the difference between the required skills versus the strengths that support closing, as well as recognizing and dealing with put-offs. Let Time Bear Dividends for You
I have heard so often from people that “I don’t have time” or “There is so much to do, I just can’t catch up.” The truth is that we all have the same amount of time: 24 hours x 7 days. This is the only resource that we are given equally. The only difference is where and how we spend it. In my opinion, where and how we spend our time has the greatest effect on the results in our life.

A Car Sales Story with a difference
Is there such as thing as a ‘good’ car sales story? My husband and I recently bought two new cars over the Christmas break. We initially went in to buy one car. It wasn’t a Christmas splurge if that’s what you’re thinking – nor was anything it like the recent press on luxury cars and their owners. We wanted to go smaller and greener for all sorts of reasons I am sure you can image and one of our cars was at the end of its lease. Having done our research, the ‘make’ of our last four cars wasn’t doing enough, in our opinion, to be ‘greener’ so we decided to look elsewhere and try something different instead.

Making Decisions
Several years ago I read a great book called ‘Kids Are Worth It – Giving Your Child the Gift of Inner Discipline’ by Barbara Coloroso. In particular, I learnt by heart the following questions which I ask myself whenever I make decisions and in turn, have taught my children to ask whenever they make decisions. The 3 Decision Questions are: * Is it life threatening? * Is it morally threatening? * Is it unhealthy?

All is In Divine Order Even When it Doesn't Look Like It
All is in Divine Order and working perfectly even when it doesn't at first glance look like it. "Take this economic crisis -- while it may not match our preferences for how we'd like it to be, it's the perfect outcome to expect when you have a small number of ego-centric people hungry for power and run by greed making the decisions and policies while everyone else casts a blind eye of ignorance and complacency." Brad Swift from meditation While participating in John Randolph Price's 40 Day Prosperity Plan that includes meditating each day and then journaling, the above statement flowed from my pen. Upon reflecting on it later, it felt true and worthy of expanding upon.

Not that all other techniques should be done away with entirely, but at least with a pre-hire trial approach, decisions don’t need to be solely dependent on a set of variables that are tenuous at best.

The Typical Ways We Often Make Decisions

Managing in China Without Coaching
- Published by CONCHIUS in Shanghai Star Business Journal 31 March, 2008. In most Western countries, leaders are used to working in an environment where the employees are highly participating in meetings and contributing their opinions and experiences to the decision making process. A Western employee feels comfortable to argue for their beliefs and to share opinions in meetings with superiors. Furthermore, a manager in the West is not necessarily assumed to be an expert in his field or industry. On the contrary, he is supposed to utilize the knowledge in his team in decisions and projects. The Western managers are therefore used to lead highly interactive teams relying heavily on two-way communication. When a team achieves strong synergy, he can and will step down. The team becomes creative and manage it-self.

What You Think is What You Do (and Who You Are)
Most people when they want to figure things out or change what is going on in their lives tend to focus on the external…the doing. They say to themselves, “What do I need to be doing differently?” When the question should be, “How am I thinking about this situation?” Anything we do in the ‘external’ has its genesis in our brains…the internal. So if we want to change, we need to focus first on how we think about it…whatever it is. The desire for live communication is at the top of the hierarchy of human needs yet there are huge dilemmas such as whether to be tough, sensitive or both and when? The ability to communicate, as well as the opportunity to use, it is a gift from the Creator. Many people are convinced they can never have a lasting relationship in their life. It’s all about finding agreements; if both parties will communicate on the issue until the other has heard and understands, they will find agreement is possible.
