Leadership Assessment #19 – Generates Passion
There are hundreds of assessments for leaders. The content and quality of these assessments vary greatly. You can spend a lot of time and money taking surveys to tell you the quality of your leadership. There are a few leading indicators that can be used to give a pretty good picture of the overall quality of your leadership. These are not good for diagnosing problems or specifying corrective action, but they can tell you where you stand quickly. Here is one of my favorite measures. It is the ability to generate passion.

Resolve to stop making resolutions!
Did you know the average New Year’s resolution lasts 72 hours or less? -about the same length a diet lasts. That means that on or about January 3, most people who made resolutions have forgotten or abandoned their plans for change. It’s well documented that successful people make goals and stick to them, they don’t bother with resolutions. Perhaps the best resolution is to never make resolutions again.

How to on Making Money Online
Success as a entrepreneur on the internet is not easily achieved. The advertising you see constantly telling you how easy it is. And the claims of how you can make all of this money by just doing a minimal amount of work. Are just not how the world we live in works. Success always has been a thing that has been confined to a small number of us. And it won't be changing any time soon.

Debt Consolidation and Refinancing – Is it Right for You?
Debt consolidation and refinancing is a common desire of many Canadians these days. One reason may be because of high levels of debt, but beyond that, refinancing is simply a sensible idea. Making the effort to refinance by taking equity out of your home during a time like this when interest rates are high could save you up to 17 percent every month, just on interest!

Action, Action and More Action Builds Self Confidence and Creates Success
Successful people are self confident. Self confident people take action. They don't let their fears, or their perfectionism trap them into procrastinating. If you want to succeed you need to be self confident. If you want to become self confident you need to face your fears -- and any other impediment to your success -- and act.

Hints on managing an ageing multicultural workorce
Research has confirmed the commonly held belief that as people age their ability (and often their desire) to change is diminished and that their thoughts, habits, patterns of behaviour, ideas and perceptions become rigid and limited and that it becomes more difficult for them to change in response to events (‘plasticity’ of the brain is reduced).

Everyone is an OUT
There are four types of people and we all fit into one of these categories. Where we are can be caused by various conditions and thankfully we aren’t bound in that situation. It is our choice to stay in our place or move to another yes, our choice.

Entrepreneurial Objectivity
For most of us, it's obvious that the bulk of the decisions we make on a daily basis are based upon the summation of our previous experience. Then combined with some sort of reactive observation. “That looks hot, I once was burned, don’t touch it.” A rather simplistically calculated decision to a situation, correct? There are a lot of philosophical explanations to this phenomenon, (of which I have no desire whatsoever to regurgitate.) However, the idea of understanding, evaluating and augmenting our decision making process, is quite possibly one of the most effective, yet difficult things to do.

How to Create a Winning Attitude in Your Business
Athletes have a desire to win and the ones who are successful hold a winning attitude. From working in the sports performance arena, staying positive in athletics applies in business too. Company owners can apply the same mindset of professional athletes by using the Neuro-Linguistics Programming and Psychology as tools to create powerful results.

Do You Lack The Confidence to Start an Internet Based Home Business?
It is a strange thing, but no matter how much talent or knowledge you have, if you have no confidence in yourself you will never achieve very much. But on the reverse side if you have a great deal of confidence in your abilities plus the desire to do something even with very little knowledge or natural ability you will learn to do what you need to and you will succeed.

The Persistent Mind Prevails Over a Dormant One
Through the ages of time we can all agree that the majority of the most persistent individuals have had the most success and the most impact on others. These individuals had a desire that the intensity level was one that which consumed them to a point there was nothing else, to a depth that there was no room for failure.

Waiting For The Goods
I admit that the most difficult time to feel 100% sure that your desire will manifest is when you are continually aware that it’s not showing up. The waiting game is quite painful.

Some Companies Feel That Having More Than One Profile is Distracting ...what do you think?

In the Darkest Hour: Start Something New
Starting a business was always a dream; so much in fact that it grew and grew in its importance to me as I progressed through college. Parkinson's Law came into effect here: the longer I waited, the bigger the burden seemed to be. Why start a business? I had a plan: an idea that would make me an instant millionaire, but I lacked the desire to endure it alone.

Lesson #5: Never Stop Learning
“Every now and then I like to pick up a copy of Time magazine and read every article from beginning to end, not just the articles that interest me most,” says Gates. “That way you can be certain to learn something you didn’t know previously.”

Lesson #5: Have Fun
“I’m still maybe Peter Pan – doesn’t want to grow up,” says Branson.

Lesson #3: Take Charge
“The wise man bridges the gap by laying out the path by means of which he can get from where he is to where he wants to go,” Morgan once said. Known amongst his peers not only for his determination and abilities but also for his take-charge personality, Morgan knew what it took to get things done. A man devoted to his business, Morgan would do whatever it took to close a deal, no matter whose head he had to go over. With a clear vision in mind, Morgan took control over his situations, directing them towards the ends he desired.

Lesson #2: Do It Yourself
“I love my product,” said Lauder. “I love to touch the creams, smell them, look at them, carry them with me. A person has to love her harvest if she’s to expect others to love it.” Because of Lauder’s love for her company, she took a very hands-on approach to its operations, getting her hands dirty in everything from production to marketing to sales. She understood the importance of hiring a good team, but her desire for perfection and quality drove her to want to control all aspects of her company, at least until it got too big for her to handle alone.

Lesson #5: Believe In Your Dream
When Thomas was 15 years old, he wrote an essay for school called The Pursuit of Happiness. In it, he wrote, “When I was eight years old, I dreamed that I would one day own the best restaurant in the world. My restaurant would serve great tasting hamburgers made just the way you like them, and all of the customers would love the food and come back again and again.”

Lesson #4: Develop a Strong Sense of Leadership
“The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee and I will pay more for that ability than for any other under the sun,” said Rockefeller.

Lesson #5: Create a Vision and Stick To It
“There is a powerful, driving force inside every human being that, once unleashed, can make any vision, dream or desire a reality,” says Robbins. “I challenge you to make your life a masterpiece. I challenge you to join the ranks of those people who live what they teach, who walk their talk.”

Lesson #1: Take Your Cue from the Customer
“The temples of design in places like Milan or God knows where overflow with beautiful, original furniture that costs extortionate amounts of money,” says Kamprad. “The vast majority of people don’t have six figure amounts in the bank and don’t live in enormous apartments…it is for just such people that I created Ikea. For everybody who wants a comfortable house in which to live well. A need that crosses all countries, races and religions.”

Lesson #4: The ‘Golden Rule’ Is Your Golden Ticket To Success
There are some who would argue that there is no such thing as ‘business ethics’. Sharp is not one of those people. In outlining the credo with which he wanted to run his company, Sharp declared that the ‘Golden Rule’ was going to be one of the cornerstones of the corporate culture that he was trying to create. “We aimed to treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves,” says Sharp. “Enforcing our credo was the hardest part, and senior managers who couldn’t or wouldn’t live by it were weeded out within a few years.” It was a painful process, says Sharp, but one that had to be done.

Lesson #1: Create a Better User Experience
“When we started this company a few years ago, we never expected to be here,” says Hurley. “It’s interesting how this simple idea, improving our own video experience online, turned into this.”

Lesson #2: Desire to Make More of Yourself

But I carried that with me for the rest of my life.”

Lesson #4: Do Not Sit Around and Wait for Something to Happen
When Hall first moved to Kansas City in 1910, he had no grand thoughts of becoming a millionaire or even creating a company of any significant success. All he wanted to do was make a living, and he thought Kansas City was the perfect place for a hard-working young man to do just that.

Coyote
Met a young man by the name of Coyote who works at the hotel in St. John's. He told us all the cool places to visit downtown. Coyote is interesting to me because he announced to me that he has no ambition, no desire to achieve anything other than climb rocks for the rest of his life. So he goes around from state park to state park and gets odds and ends jobs to give him just the means to work the rocks in the area.

Wonderful and Horrible Advertising
Because more marketing funds are invested in advertising than in any other weapon of guerrilla marketing, and because an embarrassingly huge amount of that investment is just plain wasted, marketing guerrillas know home truths about copy, graphics, what makes commercials good or bad, and why so much advertising fails.

The definition of branding
One of my readers pointed out that they really appreciated the definition of marketing that I use throughout Duct Tape Marketing. Marketing is getting someone who has a need to know, like and trust you. Most small business folks, exposed only to more academic definitions, really seem to appreciate the truthfulness of that characterization. This same reader (Eddy) also asked then for my definition of branding (as it might relate to marketing)

What a Business Makes
I’ve owned my business now for over twenty years, I love it, wouldn’t have it any other way. My Thinking Was Flawed
One of the toughest challenges we all have is facing reality. To hold a mirror up to our face, and identify changes that need to be made. Why is it that 3% of the population makes 95% of the money? If it was easy, it would be the other way around. I believe that all of us are capable of being wealthy, but in reality it comes down to mindset. If you want to join the ranks of the 3%, you must learn to think and act like the 3%.

A Recipe for Gravity Suck and Staying Stuck
You hear a lot of advice from the so called experts. Defy Gravity! Be forward thinking! Be innovative! But what if you don’t want to? What if you like things just the way they are right now, and have no desire to make stratospheric leaps in your business or increase your results?

Making the Team
There is something special about the challenge young people face when attempting to make the team. This healthy competition ignites a desire to perform that cannot easily be replicated for this young generation of Americans. Regardless of the sport, the desire to achieve and play is a remarkable source of motivation. Imagine the organizational potential if an organization could replicate this as source of motivation on the job. What would happen to key organizational metrics like attendance and productivity?

Do You Truly Want to Achieve Your Goals Badly Enough?
What's the difference between someone who achieves their goals and someone who just dreams about them? The starting point is always their level of desire, and how bad they want it. Achieving your goals doesn't have anything to do with where you've been; you can always get to where you want to be - if you want it bad enough. If you're ready to choose to your goals and dreams, and tap your true potential - let's get to work! Below are some easy steps to get you started.

How to Make Your Business Truly All-About-Them
Take your business to the next level by creating an 'It's All-About-Them' (IAAT) experience for clients. A company that is founded on the IAAT principle will have valuable services right "out of the box." The desire to make your business all-about-them is the easy part. It's the creation and implementation of business models that allow you to practice it that may require some trial and error. Making your business all-about-them will make all the difference and accelerate it to a new level of success.

How to Achieve Consistency on the Sales Force
I have always believed that in sales, the three most important attributes (not skills) are the willingness to do what it takes to succeed (commitment) the passion for being the best (desire), and the discipline to repeat the required behaviors and activities (consistency).

Salespeople Become More Effective But Can They Get Worse?
In most cases, especially when effective training and coaching has taken place, significant to dramatic improvement occurs. Occassionally though, a salesperson will appear to be worse - weaker - than the first time. How could this be? I'll explain some of the scenarios where this should not be alarming, as well as some where it should.

3 Strikes and Your Out - The Need for Sales Force Consistency
I place a higher value on consistency than I do on talent. I don't care how much potential a salesperson has. If they aren't performing the basics - consistently - then the talent is wasted.

Lesson #2: “Don’t think about the money you don’t have”
When Wozniak first started designing computers, he did not have much to go on. He knew he could put sketches down on paper, and they seemed plausible enough, but he did not know how to get from point A to point B, building a real computer.

Now How Can You Motivate Your Salespeople?
If you can't motivate your B and C players in the most challenging times by having them set goals so that they can earn more money, then how can you motivate them?

The Holidays are a Great Metaphor for Sales Success
Which do you anticipate more? The gifts that you will receive? What will it be? Could it be what you were hoping for? Will it be smelly socks? Will you have to return it? Will you love it? Will you hate it? Or... The gifts that you present? Will they be surprised? Will they be delighted? Will they be speechless? Will they know how much thought you put into it? Will they be appreciative?

Network Marketing Tips: Why you have trouble building your downline.
After the initial fire of emotional excitement and possibility dies down (usually by day 90 in a new network marketing opportunity), and the boat loads of cash aren't rolling in, a fundamental question arrives: Why doesn't anyone see what I see and how do I find people who will see the potential? As far as network marketing tips go, these three were the biggest A-ha moments for me. The principles I'll cover here are:

Why some people can make a six figure income easily, and you can't.

Sometimes for the client the initial dream is not exactly what they are motivated to pursue but because you force them to think about what it would be like to fulfill that dream emotions are demonstrated that relate to other things that are important to them besides this particular dream that they initially voiced in the coaching conversation.

START YOUR BUSINESS CORRECTLY AND CONTINUE IT FOR YEARS
Start your business in the correct manner and you will be able to make money for years once it is up and running. It is smart to not only have goals, but also a well-laid out plan of action that you will be able to follow. As a matter of fact, running your business and your life in this manner will allow you to prosper in each of these areas. Simply put, if you know where you want to finish, you will be able to arrive at that location with less issues. It is no different from driving. If we want to drive to a given place, it makes sense to have the directions before we leave or we will end up getting lost. In the same way, online business owners without a plan will fail because they do not know where they are headed and have no direction.

Your Mindset and Your Money
The way you think and the beliefs you hold are reflected in how successful you are (success defined as YOU would like it!) and how much money comes into your life. These are not new ideas. In 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, Napoleon Hill published the book Think and Grow Rich. He was inspired by billionaire Andrew Carnegie to take on an enormous project – to interview 500 of the most successful men at the time (today we KNOW at least half of these would be women) and to determine what they had in common that contributed to their success.

Light Employees’ Passion for Jobs
The door to positive and permanent change opens from the inside rather than being absorbed from the outside. Each of us has a purpose and a challenge, but we must uncover it to bring passion to the surface. The Big Mistakes in Goal Setting
The way most of us were taught to set goals could very well be the set up for disappointment. We've always been told in business seminars to write S.M.A.R.T goals. There are different versions of the acronym below but mostly you'll see it like this: Specific Measurable Attainable Risky, Realistic or Relevant (depending on who's teaching) Timely To all of the above I say...rubbish!

Ten Commandments of Leadership-Not Being a Wimp
Wimp. Wiener. Coward. Spineless. Jellyfish. And more not fit to print. All are words used to describe someone who lacks courage. The courage to do the right thing. The courage to confront. The courage to object. The courage to take risks. The courage to take a different path. All of these are needed characteristics of effective and winning leadership. In all types of settings and in all organizational structures, leaders need courage and, more importantly, the good judgment when to utilize courage and when to stand down. As important as courage is, the ability to not fight a battle is equally important.

A Marketing Mistake to Stop Making

How Not to Lead
There are things you may be doing every day that undermine your ability to lead, if not -- eventually -- your position in your workplace. There are big differences between managing and leading. You can manage to hold back a flood but doing so doesn't mean you can lead the water to where it needs to go.

The Importance of Focus
Usually, it is difficult to reach a goal unless we aim for it. The importance of focus is mission critical in first, finding the target, second, adjusting the aim, and third going for it. All this usually happens in a mental mechanism that is outside our consciousness. To raise the potential for success in life, learning to focus helps to reduce clumsy tries and near misses. Effectiveness becomes predominant with the application of focus.

Don’t tell me it’s out of your control
‘It's out of my control.' ‘I can't do anything about it.' ‘I'm just the sales person.' Sales people who sell in equipment and service contracts take note. This story is about you and your responsibility to the customer for the life of the sale not just the initial sale of the machine and the signing of the contract. The quotes above are what I heard this week from a sales person from a well-known equipment manufacture who sold us a complete equipment and service package 18 months ago. It certainly wasn't what I wanted to hear. Without going into too much detail we have had the ‘printer from hell'.

Seven Steps to Positive Power
As part of your spiritual refinement, you might seek to eliminate the character flaws that affect your life most negatively and to add as many good traits as possible, since all good traits affect your life positively. Only a clear perception of the exquisite worth of your spiritual traits will cause you to rid yourself of your negative habits and cultivate positive ones. The more negative habits you can weed out, the better your life will become. Some habits may disappear as easily as pressing the delete button on your computer keyboard; others may take years to overcome.

Be More to Do More
Far too many people are trying to do more to be happy instead of trying to be more. Those who seek more peace and happiness in their lives describe what they "do" in a normal day as feeling overwhelmed and unable to get a handle on their lives. When I write the word do on a white board for each activity they perform-from the moment they wake up-within three minutes I have usually written the word do almost a hundred times.

Your Core Desire for Learning
With so much to learn, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Focus on your Core Desires as a way of defining the direction of your learning. This will allow you to maintain peak interest while collecting information and processing data. If you are learning about things you are not interested in, your enthusiasm will quickly wane. Suppose you have a Core Desire to learn how to ski. Eagerly you seek to accomplish this desire-you buy the best equipment, take ski lessons, and willingly stand in line in the cold. You spend time listening to other skiers reveal the finer points of the sport. You ride the ski lifts even if you are afraid of heights. Because you have this Core Desire, you go all out.

Learning: Secret to Lifelong, Success
Everything we are, will be, have, or are yet to have is a direct consequence of what we learn and apply. Learning and acting upon our knowledge enable us to make meaningful contributions. The more you know, the more you realize how much you don't know. You must continue to seek out new perspectives and truths to enhance your ability to achieve your Core Desires. Continual learning is critical and affects every area of your life. Learning is a lifelong process and should be fun and exciting, bringing you increased levels of success and enjoyment.

Is Your Self-Image Working For You?
Life sometimes throws us curve balls that we have to deal with-these are the "have-tos." Life becomes boring and difficult when you're only doing the things you have to do to get where you don't want to be. If your Core Desire is to speak confidently in public, how do you acquire this ability? First, you've got to love what you are talking about, or at least have a great deal of interest in it. Knowledge is important, but it's not as critical. Another valuable way to exude a confident aura when speaking in public is to take your mind off your performance and put it on the gift in the message you are giving. If you believe in your message, have strong feelings about it, and are not focusing on how people might judge your performance, you will do just fine.

Creating Great Family Relationships
When asked what is most important to them, most people respond with one word-family. When you have a family where love is expressed, and shown, the benefits are overwhelming. A happy family where respect, laughter, love, and fun exist is truly a bit of heaven on earth. If your spouse is thoughtful, supportive, a teammate, and a friend, you'll attain greater happiness in all areas of life. If your children are close to you, bonding as siblings, developing mentally, physically, and spiritually, who can measure the joy you will know? When the trials of the world weigh heavily upon you, your family becomes a true source of strength, encouragement, and peace-a shelter from the storm.

How to Have Automatic Persistence
The Success Attitude formula makes achieving your Core Desires simple. The Success Attitude formula shows you how to unlock and open the door of opportunity. Success Attitude = (Core Desires + Direction) X Proper Action + Persistence In your journey from your home in California to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., you already have the direction you need and are taking proper action as you start the drive. Still, without persistence, you won't make it. After all, it's a long drive, and very real and valid obstacles can keep you from getting there. But if you really want to get there, if it is a Core Desire, you will do what is necessary.

How to Take Proper Action
The Success Attitude formula makes achieving your Core Desires simple. The Success Attitude formula shows you how to unlock and open the door of opportunity. Success Attitude = (Core Desires + Direction) X Proper Action + Persistence Without proper action, you can't obtain your Core Desires. A Latin proverb says, "If there is no wind, row." I add, "Row with both oars, but first untie the boat from the dock." The Conquering Force is the power that causes you to take the proper steps, no matter what the risk or how many obstacles you encounter.

The Serendipity Factor
Incredible things happen independently of those you personally create. I call these serendipitous blessings. When you're pushing hard on door A, someone or something opens door B. Often, when you look through door B, what's behind it is much better than what you were going after in the first place. However, you wouldn't have seen door B open if you hadn't been in the hall pushing on door A. Get in the here and now and look for the other opened doors, or go open some doors on your own.

The Source of Motivation and Determination
When a person persists at a task, we say that person has determination or motivation. But where does that determination come from? Some would say it comes from dedication, commitment, or sense of duty. But I believe that Core Desires are the sole source of both the determination and the motivation that are critical for success. If you are not pursuing a Core Desire, you won't be very motivated or dedicated. You won't pursue something relentlessly unless it is a Core Desire.

Core Desires Ignite the Conquering Force
Core Desires are the ignition mechanism for the Conquering Force. This is what a Core Desire can do in your life- ignite the Conquering Force within you. I've taught hundreds of karate students, most of whom indicated they wanted to be black belts, but few of them ever achieved that distinction. Not because they didn't have the ability but because it wasn't a Core Desire. The sooner you identify your Core Desires, the sooner your Conquering Force kicks in. Then, and only then, will you truly have what it takes to achieve at high levels, which is where the greatest joy and happiness can be found.

You Will See Results Pursuing Your Core Desire
When trying to discern your Core Desires, pay close attention to the responses and emotions elicited by the Search Question. You could overlook a key phrase, comment, or feeling if you are not careful. Emotions are not always easy to sense or detect. Often people will answer the question flippantly, or without focus. Often I will hear a goal they have had for many years, and when I tell them it is not a 100 on the scale, they say things like "Okay, you want to know what I really want?" Then they say what is really in their heart and get right to the Core Desire. Sometimes they joke about a Core Desire- don't let this fool you. Oftentimes people joke about the things that are most important to them, because to get serious about it is quite painful. They joke around to hide the hurt.

Three Case Studies on Core Desire
Uncovering your Core Desires and unleashing your Conquering Force will cause you to live a fuller, happier, and more successful life. As you learn to identify, and pursue, your Core Desires, you may find yourself in any of these three situations. Right on the Money Once, a vice president of a large insurance company came to me and asked for my help. Although he was earning more than enough money, he wasn't happy in his job. He had been at it for twenty-two years and had just grown tired of it. He wanted something else. When I asked him what else he'd like to do, he replied, without emotion, "I've been looking at real estate and investments because I know people who have succeeded in those areas."

Discover How to Identify Your Core Desires
Core Desires are those things you have your heart set on- what you want to be, have, or do most. One might think that identifying these Core Desires would be easy, but people often tell me, "I don't know what I want, please help me." This dilemma affects people of all age groups and crosses all political, social, and economic lines. People tell me that they don't know what they want to be, have, or do when they "grow up." They are still searching.

Turn On The Switch To Your Hidden Energy
Although many people acknowledge that we are born with an incredible, God-given power to do, have, or become whatever we want, no one has explained what it is or how to turn it on. We wonder, "Where is the switch to my hidden energy?" Your Core Desire is the switch. Having your heart fixed on your Core Desires is how your latent talents, gifts, and abilities are unleashed. Once you have a genuine, clear, and accurately defined Core Desire, you will expend all the necessary effort, for as long as it takes, to overcome any obstacle in your way in order to achieve it.

Gratification in Action
Most people want instant gratification. The good news is that when you're pursuing genuine Core Desires, in most cases you experience constant gratification. You don't have to wait to have fun or joy when you are on the path leading toward your genuine Core Desire. Having a life in which everything you do is driven by Core Desires-things you love to do or be-is the most satisfying and fulfilling way to live. When you embark on the journey to identify your Core Desires, you will open up to a new way of living-a life where everything you ever wanted will be available to you or you will be on the path toward it, and loving every minute of it.

The Source of All Success
There is a better way to achieve the success you want-a way that is simple and easy to understand because it is basic to your soul; in fact, it is the DNA of all success. It is the way people have achieved success from the beginning of time. It worked before there were self-help experts, it still works today, and it will continue to work in the future. It is the building block upon which all success is built.

Stress-Free Selling® - Eliminate Stress in Sales
A sale is stressful when we approach Prospects with the intention of making a sale and the fear of not making a sale. To compound matters, Prospects are afraid we are going to manipulate them. They are afraid we are going to sell them something. . . something that's not in their best interest. Prospects accept appointments reluctantly (which is why we have difficulty getting them on the phone in the first place) and are pre-armed with a litany of excuses (aka objections) to get rid of you. It is this dichotomy of goals (you want to make a sale and Prospects want to protect themselves) that creates stress. Imagine if you both want to meet. Imagine if neither feels the other is going to try to force anything on him. Imagine you both feel the only acceptable outcome is the satisfaction of your Prospect's goals.

Which Side Of The Road Am I Supposed To Be On?
Years ago, my honey, Robin, and I planned a trip back to his homeland, Australia. Part of that trip entailed me driving. I knew that they drive on the opposite side of the road than Americans do. The Power Of Thanks
If you were like me growing up, when it came to accepting presents or gifts from others, your parents may have told you, “No, you can not accept that.” They told you this for a variety of reasons, but the message was clear. You should not accept gifts. To further complicate things you may have grown up hearing the old adage “It is better to give than to receive.”

Words That Evoke Resistance
It has come to my attention, more than once, that most people state their intentions with somewhat of an "I hope this happens" kind of feeling behind their words. When I am asking a client what their intention is (or said another way, "What is the desired outcome?"), I'm really wanting to know what they are committed to having happen. I do not want them to wonder if it will or won't happen, I want them to expect it to happen.

Goal Setting: Specific vs. General
It's a new year and I look at it as a clean slate in which to create. Create anything I want. It doesn't matter what goals I didn't get or did get last year. I get to dream and plan for this year with no baggage from the past. I will take the lessons learned and make some new success habits. But it is just so darn exciting to be sitting with a fresh canvas upon which I get to create!

May The Force Be With You
I was never a fan of the Star Wars movies. I couldn't really see what all the hype was about, so I never saw any of the movies until a couple of years ago. Taking action is great. BUT do you know what job really needs to be accomplished and the right tool to achieve it?

Back down to Earth after the boss returns
The scenario: Your immediate supervisor is returning to the job after an extended leave. It means you will no longer be the acting department head and will have to revert to your former second-in-command status. How do you make the adjustment in terms of your ego and desire for responsibilities? Instead of viewing this situation as a step back, view it as a step aside, with potential for two steps forward from there. Keep your professional future in mind by concentrating on the few areas outlined below.

Improving Service on the (Telephone) Line
Technology, in the form of phones and computers, has become a kind of ubiquitous front door for customers to use any time and any place where they have the desire for a product or service. At least in theory, technology gives customers a more personal help desk than they are likely to find face to face in the busy rush of modern business. If you answer the phone as part of your organization’s service to others, that service is on the line.

Never stop challenging yourself~
How often do you really challenge yourself? This could be in your career, personal challenges, physical challenges, or any combination. For those of you that have been reading my tips for some time, you remember that I was persuaded by a good friend to sign up for a triathlon last summer. I loved the experience and was very proud of my commitment to the process. Well, this same friend just asked me if I would be interested in signing up for the MS150 with her. This event takes place in June and consists of riding my bike for 150 miles over two days. This would be a huge undertaking in which I would push and train myself harder than I ever have before.

Why don’t my goals work?
It is not unusual for me to meet with someone who has an incredibly detailed outline of their goals. It is sometimes layed out in a PowerPoint presentation with pictures and symbols. To the outside world it looks as if they have a very focused and productive guide for the future…BUT, they will say to me, “These are the same goals I have had for the last 7 years. I have made no progress towards these goals. What is the problem?”

Shared Services Simplified or How Barry Bonds’ Bat Weight Explained GoC Thinking
I was recently asked to provide a contextual point of reference that would assist the uninitiated public in understanding the reasons why the GoC’s Shared Services program has become such a contentious issue. The Answer was Baseball! Rather than getting into a complicated dissertation of the differences between an agent-based model versus an equation-based model where the prescribed processes reflect and therefore adapt to stakeholder characteristics and objectives, I tried to think of what I would say to one of my sports fanatic friends. And it hit me, the answer is baseball!

5. Penetration Selling -- Penetrating the Barriers to Understanding
In Penetration Selling, we therefore recognize that the key barriers which need to be penetrated during the presentation are: • Anything that might block the prospect from achieving a full understanding of the product, and even more importantly, • Anything that might block the prospect from gaining a good understanding of how the product will more than adequately satisfy his key needs and wants for owning that product. Work-Life Balance should be Life-Work Balance - what do you reckon?
We hear so much these days about the work-life balance, but isn't that bit of jargon putting up a barrier right from the start? Surely life and all that it entails should be the priority, work is merely part of life. A major part of life for many people I know and I don't mean to diminish its value, by the way.
