Recently I did something that was totally out of character for me. I always talk about taking chances - whether in business or in life -- and this time I really took a big one. I agreed to take part in a huge WWE wrestling extravaganza, headed up by an amazing man named Vince McMahon. He can put on a show the likes of which I’ve never seen.

I have been thinking about the various blogs on leadership lately, and it strikes me that there is a difference of opinion amongst our community on whether employee performance is best improved by pushing or pulling. I believe the best leaders incorporate both into their style.

Is Detroit going through some very tough times? Yes. And that is precisely why there is an opportunity. For example, when the construction industry was booming, heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders and the like could only be purchased at retail prices. When the construction market collapsed, suddenly you could buy those same pieces of heavy equipment for pennies on the dollar. That was an opportunity for those who had the means to take advantage and buy while the market was down.

Better to Try and Fail – or not try at all??
Recently I watched the 2007 movie Lions for Lambs. In this movie a brilliant but apathetic student asks his professor, “Is there any difference in trying but failing, and simply failing to try – if you end up in the same place anyway?” He was attempting to justify taking the safe route; never really taking a stand or trying anything big. What do you think? Do you cringe at trying something big because of the possibility of failure?
