Lesson #4: Pull For Your People
“The way we have built our company by including the success of the company with everyone in it and not leaving our people behind is a great example of building a business the right way,” says Schultz. “We’re not ever going to turn our backs on our [employees].”

SBA\'s Role
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is an independent Agency of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. It is charged with the responsibility of providing four primary areas of assistance to American Small Business. These are: Advocacy, Management, Procurement, and Financial Assistance. Financial Assistance is delivered primarily through SBA’s Investment programs, Business Loan Programs, Disaster Loan Programs, and Bonding for Contractors.

Export Express
SBA Export Express combines the SBA’s small business lending assistance with its technical assistance programs to help small businesses that have traditionally had difficulty in obtaining adequate export financing. The pilot program is available throughout the country and is expected to run through September 30, 2005.

True Heroes
Life-changing events led these small business owners to become disability advocates.

Children's fitness tax credit
Federally, a non-refundable tax credit is available to parents who incur costs associated with registering their child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The child whom the parent claims this expense for must be under the age of 16 at the beginning of the year or if eligible for the disability credit, under the age of 18. A parent is allowed to claim up to $500 of expenses per year, per child. For 2009, the tax credit is equal to 15% of the expense claimed. For children eligible for the disability credit, an additional $500 in expenses can be claimed if the total expenses are at least $100. You should receive or ask for a receipt from the organization that provides the prescribed activity.

Does Recession Hinder Churches?
When people are hurting financially, spiritually, grieving a loss, and going through other hard times, they will often turn to the church for guidance even if they are not church-goers. Most churches have benevolence committees and funds used to help the needy year round but from Thanksgiving on through the holidays, more requests come in for help than any other time of year. With the recession, churches are being hard hit for assistance. Some churches have food pantries, clothes closets; some can help with power bills, pay for medicine and other ways in which the needy require and request help. When church members are hurting from similar experiences, their church families will surround them with love and whatever assistance they might need. My church in the past has paid my heating bill because I got laid off and needed help.

Disturbing Trend in Michigan: Disability Claims Approved And Then Abruptly Taken Away Within a Year
Insurance companies sell group policies that some courts have ruled provide little or no coverage. Congress approved ERISA to “protect” employees’ pensions but in doing so unwittingly gave disability insurance companies a free pass to play the game on a field that is not level. That practice has been challenged by a lawsuit against insurance giant UnumProvident (Unum) charging that the insurance carrier devised a scheme to illegally deny or terminate the long-term disability claims of thousands of people in violation of ERISA.

ADA - a heart issue !!!
A few weeks ago I attended a series of seminars on ADA sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects. ADA stands for The American Disability Act Law implemented in 1990, prohibiting disability discrimination. ADA standards govern the construction and alteration of places such as commercial facilities, state and government facilities and public accommodations. The Department of Justice adopted new standards for accessible design in September 2010 and these will go into effect March 15, 2012.

Insurance For Disabilities for Individuals
Short term disability income insurance is available immediately should you get injured or have an illness and are unable to work. This type of coverage can last from a few weeks or up to 12 months or more, depending on the specifics of the plan you have. Most employers offer this type of plan as part of their benefits package. In fact, some states require employers to make some sort of short term disability income insurance, available to their employees.

When selling a small business consider seller financing - Guaranteeing the Seller Note with Insurance
Have you ever asked yourself any of the following? What if something serious happens to the purchaser? In case of tragic events, where will my money go? Will I be protected if the purchaser experiences disability or something worse?

For Kids, It’s Just Seamless Communications
Keeping pace in the industry is tough. Especially when you have to constantly go to your kids to ask for assistance. Of course now that they're teenagers they're old and often have to go next door and ask the new up-n-comers. It was bad enough when we used the DVR - which is so yesterday now that anything worthwhile is available online 24x7. But now it's assistance with our smartphone (like help me find the app we just downloaded), our tablet (ok iPad) WiFi syncing - forgive us but gawd we love the battery life, WiFi searching on the net-ready LCD screen(s), constant patches/updates for our notebook(s) and home server. Can't wait for tomorrow to see what new thing we don't know, don't really want to know but will have to learn just to stay in the game.
