Lesson #3: Stay Ahead of the Times
“I think we’ve been an agent for change, everywhere, and I think change frightens people,” says Murdoch. “They’re going nicely in what seems like a settled industry, and someone comes in and says, ‘I can do this better. It doesn’t matter how nice that other one is.’ That’s one of the distinguishing points of our acquisitions.”

Lesson #2: The Proof is in the Product that Works
In 1910, Harley-Davidson motorcycles captured at least seven different first place finishes in races and endurance contests across America. The four boyhood friends who founded the company began racing their motorbikes because they loved it. But soon after they began sweeping races across the country, Harley and the Davidson brothers realized that they were now racing for something even more valuable than a trophy or prize money: they were racing for sales.

Is Canada the New China for VCs? Or Just the New Colorado?
Granted, it's a tiny market, but with the disappearance of most of the tax-advantaged venture capital firms from the Canadian market it's interesting to see that U.S. venture firms are increasingly driving things. There was 21% growth year-over-year in Canadian venture investment, but that was largely a function of the growing dominance of U.S. VCs in the Canadian market, with such firms now accounting for more than half of investment spending in Ontario, Canadian's largest venture market.

It was interesting in that as I was reading the story about Intel in which it is alleged that the company "Used bribery and coercion to maintain its dominance in the microprocessor market," I could not help but think that this was not the first time that the proverbial shoe was on the other foot in terms of the sometimes strained relationship between buyer and supplier.

How the order of Google search results will be affected by new search capacity and what this means for your website
The last six months has seen the development of two major changes that will affect the order of Google search results. Google hopes these changes will improve search for users and also help them stay at the top of the search engine pile. Firstly is improving the ability of search spiders to read flash and audio-visual content, and secondly, the introduction of SearchWiki. Both developments will impact the way you think about search engine optimisation (SEO) and content for your website.

I’m OK, You’re Not So Hot (personality types)
Personality typing is NOT about putting people in boxes. Every single human being is unique, there will never be another of any of us ever again. Not even our children are exact copies of us. They are bits of us for sure; bits of the other gender parent; a complex mix of where they were born (place); where in the family they were born; how they were brought up; what values they were taught; what religious and social teachings they were introduced to in their early years; where they were educated; what friends they chose in school, and a million other subtle influencers in-between. And each one of us, regardless of all of the above, also have that unique ingredient that is simply, us.

Selling Effectively - The Buyer Blending System
Have you ever tried to sell a client on your property and had difficulty establishing a rapport? Have you ever emphasized something you thought important and your client responded blankly? Do you find some clients make slower (or faster) decisions than you think appropriate? Answering yes to any of these questions means that you have run across a client whose buying style is different from your selling style. To be more successful you need to learn to adapt your selling style to fit your client's buying style. By "reading" your client's behavioral style and appealing to that person in his or her terms, you can actually increase your sales dramatically.

4.1 Diversification trends at the subregional level: Economic Report on Africa 2007
The general picture of the continental performance that was shown in figure 4.1 masks the gains and losses made at the subregional and country levels. Figure 4.3 gives the situation at the subregional level and it compares five subregions defined around some of the RECs. In 1980, the most diversified subregions were COMESA and ECOWAS. The least diversified was CEMAC with SADC and North Africa in between. By 2002, the diversification gains at the subregional level had changed, with the most significant gains made by SADC, which is now the most diversified subregion on the continent. It is followed by COMESA and North Africa. CEMAC has remained the least diversified subregion.

Lesson #5: Position Your Business to Become an Industry Leader
Gallo did not just help put California’s wine industry on the map; he helped establish the modern U.S. wine market as a whole once prohibition came to an end. Aside from the personality characteristics and work ethic that helped Gallo succeed as an entrepreneur, it was largely his strategic decisions on how to gain industry dominance in all aspects of his operations that transformed E&J Gallo Winery from a two-man operation into an international success story.

Positioning: The core of corporate communications
Positioning is a lost art in Business Development today. It reached its zenith in the 1980s -- before "1-Minute Management" replaced in-depth analysis and planning. A truly good Positioning Statement will be 12 words or less, and in one forceful sentence state the proven strengths that give you dominance in the markets you want to sell in. Once you have it perfected you can easily develop highly effective Mission Statements, Elevator Pitches, Ad Campaigns, Publicity, Sales Materials and Websites.
