"The Ultimate Triumph of Theory Y"
| |
| Many of us Baby Boomers went in to the workforce just when theories of management were taking hold. In this article, I'll show you why it's taken me over 30 years to see one important theory win the day. |

THE BRAND AS JIHAD
| |
| Some mornings she would wake up positively dying for a ciggie, and she would think she didn’t have any, and she’d walk angrily through the house only to find that, yes, Douglas had hidden a pack away somewhere just for this emergency. He had seen enough times her mood swing into darkness when she learned there was not a Kent for her to smoke anywhere in the house. Cigarettes, Douglas had quickly discovered, were a reliable pacifier, that major catastrophe could be averted if he made certain there was always a smoke to be had. He also quickly learned that her first two hours of the day were delicate, barometric and tentative, and that she reacted badly to any intrusions in her routine. He took to setting her a place at the table each morning, having the kettle hot, and a cup and spoon and the instant coffee out and ready for her. |

Motivation: The Art & Science of Recharging Human Batteries
| |
| Behavioral scientists and psychologists, such as Taylor, Maslow, Herzberg, McGregor, Skinner, Blake and Mouton, and Argyris, were concerned with human models and the most effective ways to motivate people. They all tried to discover what motivates people and how can organizations tap their resources to enhance their performance through highly motivated teams. If the ultimate organizational goal is higher productivity, superior quality, customer satisfaction and happiness, and increased net profit they have to invest in their people’s welfare and being.

Old New Ways to Motivate Employees
| |
| Over the last quarter century, I have studied and taught the theories on motivation of Taylor, Maslow, Herzberg, McGregor, Argyris, and McLland. Although each of those management and behavioral scientists has tackled the topic from a different point of view, defending his opinion with both theoretical research, observation, I find Herzberg’s theory the most practical and easy to implement in the workplace. Naturally, the work of all those scientists complements the whole approach to the very important topic of motivation, but herzberg’s points more clearly at the satisfiers and dissatisfiers in the workplace. His focus on the job content as a lasting motivator qualifies for more analysis and serious consideration.

Innovative Opportunities: A Byproduct of Unemployment
| |
| Unemployment may not be a welcomed situation, but we are learning that it is not always a bad situation either. Remarkably, we are seeing a recent trend where some top managers of large companies are up and quitting their jobs without having another offer lined up. These mavericks are announcing to the business world that they have higher aspirations and they have the courage and self confidence to pursue them. “The decision to quit a senior position to look for a better one is unconventional, to say the least. For years executives and headhunters have hewed closely to the rule that the most attractive CEO candidates are the ones who must be poached.” (McGregor, 2009) Changing the rules of the game and making it your game- that is exactly the type of attitude I strive to uncover in people. |

Business Leadership Dilemma: Can the Dark Side of Employee Behavior Be Tamed?
| |
| This year is the 50th anniversary of one of the most important books in the field of leadership practices. When Douglas McGregor asked us to look at basic beliefs about the workforce he got the conversation rolling. "The Human Side of Enterprise" is a classic, one to be on all leadership development lists. Are employees lazy and self-centered, needing strong directives and lots of watching (theory X)? Or, are they inherently meant to blossom and all they need is to be given sunshine and room to bloom and grow (theory Y)?

Why Smart Managers Master the Art of Listening Well
| |
| Many companies that talk passionately about being market-driven and customer-focused are overlooking one crucial ingredient - the ability to listen well.
John McDonnell, chairman and chief executive of aircraft manufacturer McDonnell Douglas Corp. of St. Louis, summed up the problem: "We did not always listen to what our customers had to say before telling them what they wanted." |
