The Beauty Magnate: Chanel Leaves Her Mark
| |
| Chanel was beginning to make a name for herself among the who’s who of Paris all the while acquiring a taste for their luxuries and decadent lifestyle. With her modest hat and dress store, Chanel’s reputation was already beginning to grow as a woman who had little interest in the extravagant and tight-fitting clothes that were all the rage at the time. Instead, she opted for darker and simpler dresses that drew their inspiration from men’s clothing as well as the outfits of the nuns she had grown up around. |

Lesson #4: Leave A Strong Impression
| |
| “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress,” said Chanel. “Dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” Chanel understood the importance of appearance to getting ahead in the business world. | |
| Hindsight is 20/20. Looking back on the success – or lack thereof – of his first Subway store, DeLuca acknowledges that his biggest mistake was its “crummy location. In February, the store was doing so bad that we were thinking of closing up.” But together with his partner, Buck, the pair decided to try something even more eccentric: they decided to open up a second store. “We talked ourselves into building the second store,” says DeLuca. |

Keepers
| |
| I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, garden hose in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things ... a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep |

Marks and Spencer, India Strategy Review - Important Lessons for Retailers
| |
| Smriti Mehrotra, vice president of a media channel, works in close proximity to the Marks & Spencer’s store in Phoenix Mills, Mumbai. Being a compulsive shopper and a brand loyalist, Smriti is exactly the kind of customer, who will eventually increase sales at M&S. However, she rarely visits the store unless she needs to buy gift hampers for special occasions. “I can never manage to get my size at the M&S store. Most of their apparels are not stylish and are ill fitting. They offer no variety and the same dress will be repeated if five different colours,” complains Mehrotra. |

Interviewing for a Job – Some Dress Basic No-Nos
| |
| I have actually gotten depressed by client stories about how people dress for job interviews. So I am working on the premise that people just don't know - that nobody told them about some of the unwritten rules. Organization Structure Limits or Liberates High Performance
| |
| The CEO of a national retailer was very frustrated. His face grew noticeably redder as he told me how he had set up each store as a profit center and was attempting to hold store managers and their regional managers accountable for profitability. But when a store under performed the store manager would show that head office buyers were forcing them into stocking the wrong merchandise for their particular mix of customers. Or they would claim that the marketers hadn't put together the right campaign for their local market.
