From the Publisher Good Health Beauty
| |
| In a recent article in The New York Times, it was reported that an alcoholic drink a day can significantly reduce the risk for heart disease in men while women get the same benefit with only one drink per week. A Danish study suggests that simple alcohol intake for women is protective but for men it is drinking frequently.
That's my tip on this month's focus, Good Health and Beauty. Now that we are in the relaxed summer season, aren't you all happy to hear that I am not encouraging you to exercise more, eat healthier food but simply to drink more alcoholic beverages? So be sure to sip a cold beer, wine cooler or an iced martini while you read about all the new health and beauty franchises being marketed. |

Garber on Business: Business dinner? Don't whine about wine
| |
| No longer does the haughty sommelier at Le Cavalier Réstaurant Français glare down his well-trained nose and impatiently finger his goûte-vin as he debates how to intimidate you into buying a more expensive wine -- that is, ahem, to persuade Monsieur to make a better choice. No longer must you fumble through a 28-page wine list, searching for a name you recognize -- any name you recognize, in order to breathe a sigh of relief. |

High Price Raises Perception of Quality
| |
| In an article in the January 2008 Economist magazine, a study was cited that was done by Dr. Antonio Rangel of the California Institute of Technology. Rangel found that if people are told a wine that they are tasting is expensive, the perception in their brain evolves to increase the quality of the wine they had consumed based on nothing other than higher price meaning a higher quality. |

The Wine Giant: How Ernest Gallo Got His Start
| |
| Ernest Gallo was not your typical billionaire. Up until the day he died, he insisted on keeping his home number listed in the public phone book; he wanted everyone to be able to find him. But it is exactly traits like that which continue to make this winemaker stand out. Today, the business he started with his brother back in 1933 with just $6,000 in capital remains the leading exporter of California wine, producing some 2.64 million bottles of wine every day. |
|
|
Lesson #1: Make a Commitment to Your Brand
| |
| Many before him had tried, but Gallo was able to do something that no one else had ever successfully done before: he introduced wine to a country that was only used to drinking liquor and beer. How did he do it? By building a brand that would stick, and by refusing to abandon that brand in the face of market pressure. |
|
|
Lesson #5: Position Your Business to Become an Industry Leader
| |
| Gallo did not just help put California’s wine industry on the map; he helped establish the modern U.S. wine market as a whole once prohibition came to an end. Aside from the personality characteristics and work ethic that helped Gallo succeed as an entrepreneur, it was largely his strategic decisions on how to gain industry dominance in all aspects of his operations that transformed E&J Gallo Winery from a two-man operation into an international success story. |

Prom and Underage Drinking: A Parent's Guide to Keeping Kids Safe
| |
| As a parent, providing alcohol to a teen is never a good idea. Youth who reported that a parent or a friend’s parent had provided alcohol at a party within the past year reported drinking more on their last drinking occasion and were twice as likely to have consumed alcohol within the past 30 days and to have engaged in binge drinking. |

| As teenagers mature into their senior year of high school, many parents begin to feel more comfortable about letting them drink alcohol.
