An Advocate for the Little Guy: How CABiNET has provided an Important Voice for High-Tech SMEs in Canada (CABiNET Profile)

| “Shared Services is different from the diametrically opposite model of Outsourcing which is where an external third party is paid to provide a service that was previously internal to the buying organization, typically leading to redundancies and re-organization. There is an on-going debate about the advantages of Shared Services over outsourcing. It is sometimes assumed that a joint venture between a government department and a commercial organization is an example of Shared Services but in fact they are quite different. The joint venture involves the creation of a separate legal commercial entity (jointly owned) which provides profit to its shareholders. It is difficult to see what is being shared rather than bought. Such joint ventures are really a form of outsourcing.”

Cluster Development and the CAC (PWGSC): Facilitator or Competitor?

The original intent of my research for this posting was to determine how the global reach of Consulting and Audit Canada (now called Government Consulting Services under the PWGSC banner) could be used as a vehicle to develop strong domestic clusters that could then be leveraged to deliver products and services internationally.

Are African Governments Really Ready to Embrace “E-“?

On tuesday 28th August,I had the pleasure of attending another skunkworks meeting, I was actually very excited about it since there was going to be a presentation by one of the team members behind PloneGOV an open source e-government suite of applications that has gained a lot of traction Europe and is slowly gaining acceptance in Africa and South America.

DOING BUSINESS WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT – PART III

In many cases, the government and its established vendors require you to have a GSA schedule to respond to a government requirement. The reason for this is the Schedule has pre-negotiated rates and prices, so the government and its vendors know that these rates and prices are fair and reasonable.

While We Were Sleeping: A Story of Misdirected Efforts in the World of Public Sector Procurement Policy

| It has been one of the more interesting weeks in the world of Government of Canada procurement policy-making.
Despite the numerous “outward facing” storylines that can be pursued in terms of GoC activity, the real action (or lack thereof) is actually within the supplier community itself.
I am of course referring to the ongoing inability of associations and lobbying groups to respond to government policy outside of the confines of a narrowly defined platform. A platform I would add in which the tempo is being set by the government.

Change starts with you

| “Only Government can fix the mess we are in”, President Obama.
“Government is the problem…”, Nate McCulloch Gwinnett Daily Post
We speak of government as if it were our neighbor, pastor, teacher, friend or foe. It is none of these and yet it is all of these. Government, at any level, is simply an organizational structure and is incapable of any action or activity until people are inserted into the equation. Our founding fathers meant it when they said “of the people, by the people and for the people”
So the problem and/or solution lie with us.

How Can I Win Government Contracts? Part 1

I know the government has specific initiatives to recruit and hire small business contractors for governmental projects but how can I get these jobs? I started my search on this topic at the source, the government. On the SBA website there are tutorials on how to apply for and win government contracts. By taking one of these convenient online courses all of my questions were answered. I want to share some of this information but I would also recommend that anyone interested in acquiring government contracts take this online course themselves.

Tax Hikes Are Not About Revenue

| It's pretty simple. When the U.S. federal government decreases income taxes, they increase government revenue by creating more business opportunities, more jobs, and more taxpayers. Investment dollars flow into the country. On the other hand, when the government increases taxes, they decrease government revenue. Opportunities and jobs are lost; investment dollars flow away to other, more-business-friendly countries.

If Business Ran Like the Government

The big news these days is the federal government’s debt ceiling. Every time Washington gets into one of these messes - which it does a lot - people renew the discussion about how government should be run. “If I ran my company the way they run the government…” The outcome is usually bankruptcy or prison. Should government be run like a business? That’s a debate for another article. But, the surprising thing is many business ARE run like the government. Do you understand how to manage cash flow in your business? Does your company cater to special interests, waste money or time or push problems aside instead of addressing the real issue?

Renewing Limited Government: Term Limits

In America, the "land of the free," the government has run amok. The Founders, who fought (and in some cases, died) to leave a country wherein citizens were to rule and the government was supposed to be limited, would be shocked at the size of the behemoth that is the modern federal government. And many states have just as bloated a bureaucracy....

Renewing Limited Government: Spending Limits

We have to renew limited government in the United States, or the entire world will enter a new era of darkness the likes of which no one can foresee. There are at least ten limits we could impose on government (and, in some cases, on what I see as quasi-governmental U.S. institutions) that would have a remarkable turn-around impact on our economy - and on our society. And one of the first, if not THE first, is to limit government spending....

Why Small Government Is Better

I've written at length about what I see as the biggest need in the United States today: renewing limited government. Why? Because the strength and prosperity of free people throughout the world depends on limited government in the U.S. The more government grows, the more the economy shrinks, taking down with it the freedom, prosperity, and strength of all free nations....
