2008 - Was this the dawn of a new age of networking?
| |
| This article was originally published in The National Networker
Has this been the year networking has grown up in the UK? There certainly seem to have been more changes in the last 12 months than any comparable period in the last decade. |

2nd Annual Beyond the Tears Humanitarian Awards, 2008
| |
| Not even the crazy downpour/storm that hit New York on September 6th, 2008 could stop the Second Annual Beyond the Tears Humanitarian Awards. And, while the legendary Apollo theater was not filled to capacity, the show was nothing short of perfection!
The second annual event began with the very funny, Nollywood handsome actor and comedian, Francis Duru welcoming the audience. His jokes through out the evening was the icing to a great evening. After his welcome remarks, Duru introduced members of the SACAIDS, the non-profit responsible for producing the event. |

Leadership
| |
| A team of all-stars or an all-star team? When my wife and I were in Sydney, Australia, we had an opportunity to attend a performance of the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra at the famed Opera House. The seats were choice, our night was free, so we jumped at the opportunity. When we arrived 30 minutes early, the orchestra members were already warming up. The individuals came in all sizes, ages and colors, and were both male and female. Some of them, like the cymbals player, would perform five or six seconds during the entire evening, while the cellist had one part that would extend over 20 minutes. As they warmed up, the "music" sounded like noise to me. |

Extraordinary Day
| |
| The other day a friend made an off-hand comment that made me laugh at first and then ponder. We had had a brief chat early in the day and then he said, “OK, you right the world and I will speak to you later.” There was something paradoxical and empowering about that comment. I would do something totally earth shattering during the day and then we would have another routine chat that evening. Rather like the line “Only got 4 minutes to save the world” from Madonna’s song “4 Minutes.” When I listen to that song, I think, “Well, if Madonna can save the world in four minutes, I can definitely accomplish everything on my to do list,” no matter how daunting it looks. |

Who Is Your Proud Family?
| |
| Once again I was on the couch at 5am watching Disney cartoons. I like to get up early and get a bit of work done before I go for a run. While I’m cleaning out the last evening’s email, I watch a bit of children’s television to pick up a life lesson or two.
This morning, I got a great business lesson from Lilo and Stich. |

The Sign of a True Sales Pro - Admitting We’re Never Too Good for Coaching
| |
| Ringggg. Ringggg. Not my favorite sound in the evening. It was Virginia, someone I knew, trying to explain why I needed her services. I hung up feeling like I had dodged the bullet for now…and went on with my evening. Later she called back for advice on what she could have done differently to improve her call. That is a sign of great professionalism. |

SUNRISES AND SUNSETS
| |
| Let me start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year.
One of my fondest memories of summers at the lake was sitting on the deck at the cottage (preferably screened in) either early in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and a blanket wrapped around me watching the sun come up or late in the evening sitting with a drink and in the old days an occasional cigar, quietly watching the sun go down on another day. It was always at these times I would reflect back over days past and wonder about days to come and where my life would take me and my family.

Fairy Tales
| |
| One of my clients told me the following story: "we were sitting in a meeting and it was, to say the least, very tense. The big boss was angry with her leadership team. She wanted the finished proposal for a major, big, gargantuan business deal finished before the sun set that day, right after the meeting.
Everyone took a breath and looked down at the table. They all knew it was impossible. The stats had not been delivered yet and there was no way it could be done and done right by early evening, even by late that night. |

FRANCHISE NETWORKING SESSIONS : LEARN AND INTERACT WITH SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISERS.
| |
| We had a very interesting franchise networking meet last evening at the Catholic Club organized by the Franchising Association of India. Having reached out to over 200 franchisers from Bangalore for this Evening, i think that these meets are a great way for companies exploring franchising / young franchisors on the one hand and for mature franchisors on the other. We had industry leaders speaking from their own experiences, and how they dealt with their business challenges in general and franchising in particular. We will have many such Franchise Meets over the next couple of months across the country and build up a discussion on how we can strengthen franchising for every business owner / company who are exploring franchising or want to franchise or are already franchising and need some solutions or the other. |
