5 Lessons We Can Learn from Michael Phelps
23-year-old Michael Phelps is the record-breaking Olympic Swimming Champion. He is the first person to win eight gold medals in a single Olympics; the Beijing 2008 Olympics to be precise. Overall, he currently holds 16 Olympic medals; the other eight remaining are six gold and two bronze medals at Athens in 2004. What an inspiring and incredible achievement!

Marriage
As the 10th of 12 children, my older brothers and sisters obviously got here many years before I did. Two of my older brothers and two of my older sisters had failed marriages. Since I was at the bottom of the production chain, my younger brother and I had the benefit of what my mother had observed and taught us. She pointed out that we should never date a girl more than once or twice if we discovered we would be unwilling to have her as the mother of our children and be unwilling to take her wherever we were and introduce her with pride to anyone. I listened intently to what my mother had to say. I chose carefully.

Managing Diversity: A Bliss or a Curse
Workforce diversity is a reality at San Francisco. We already reflect the national demographic trends predicted for the year 2000 by the Hudson Institute in its 1987 report, Workforce 2000. Accommodation issues for our diverse workforce, such as childcare, elder care, flexible work arrangements, disability accommodation, and literacy are being addressed in the workplace.

Leveraging on China’s Thirst to Develop Africa
I recently heard a great daughter of Africa tell a story of two sisters who chose two different paths.

Are you ready for your game plan?
A 75 and 25 year old men were sitting on a bench watching a ball game. The younger one looks at the elder and with a pompous attitude, asks him the following:” I am 25, my generation built Apple air, IPods and PDA’s”. What did your generation build? The older man turns his head and with simplicity, replies:” I am 75, my generation built the Computers that helped you build the Apple Air, IPods and PDA’s”.!

Business Lessons Learned At The Mall
No offense to my mall merchant brothers and sisters, but a trip into the deepest jungle is more appealing to me than a trip to the mall. I get no joy out of trudging from store to store, attempting to communicate with salespeople from other planets, browsing discount racks of last season's dollar merchandise and peering into windows at mannequins that seem to be in some sort of inanimate pain (why can't they make a happy mannequin?).

Operator Error Is Why Most Businesses Fail
This is the column that probably gets me kicked out of the entrepreneurial chapter of the Priory of Scion. I look silly in those long robes anyway, so here goes. A thousand apologies to my entrepreneurial brothers and sisters, but. I think the more important question is: do businesses fail or does the entrepreneur in charge of them fail? I have to be honest and tell you that I think most business failures must be laid at the feet of the person in charge.

Lesson #4: Nice Guys Finish Last
“My father wasn’t a believer in ‘monetary allowances’ for my sisters and me, so he set us up raising chickens,” recalls Steinbrenner. “We sold the eggs to our neighbours…If one of our neighbours wanted a fresh chicken, then we also had to kill and dress the chicken.”

Social Media for the Medical Industry: How Much Info is Too Much?
There are compelling reasons for hospitals, healthcare practices, elder care facilities, and other medical industry organizations to get involved with social media and reap the benefits that other businesses are.

Ambition, Resilience and Starting Over
Judy Elder was the General Manager of Microsoft's Consumer Division in 2002. Shortly after she gave this inspiring speech, she had a brain aneurysm and died at the age of 47. Judy talks about ambition and why we shy away from embracing women who have ambition. Feeling confident in yourself takes a lot of trust. Believing in yourself can carry you through some very tough times as this article will show you.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus
Twin sisters Christa Pitts and Chanda Bell grew up in a house where their mother hid an elf named Fisbee somewhere each night between Thanksgiving and Christmas. A few years ago the sisters suggested they write a book about Fisbee. Every publisher turned them down. "It's been done - it's not practical to package a doll with a book - it's too expensive - no one will buy them." So they knew their idea was stupid and you’ve never heard of Elf on the Shelf.
