Labor's Ten Minimum Standards

| Federal Labor’s plan for a new industrial relations system includes a significant expansion in the number of minimum employment standards. At the time of the Workchoices changes in March 2006, the previous government introduced employment standards into federal law regarding hours of work, annual leave, personal/carers leave and parental leave.

| We are sometimes called on to work with policy makers in a variety of organizations we are associated with in our personal, business and volunteer lives. Working with these policy makers can be very rewarding and can be very frustrating. Since 1970 I have been working with policy makers at all levels of government, non-profits, businesses, institutions and other organizations. And from the experience of those years, I developed a list of the top 10 tips to effectively work with policy makers. I have summarized those tips below:

Unfair Dismissal under Federal Labor Government

| As outlined in its policy announcement prior to the election, Federal Labor has proposed changes to the unfair dismissal laws. We expect that the new government will commence to enshrine these changes in legislation early next year. However, things are not certain. |

The Effect of Elections on Small Business

Over the years I have closely observed small businesses on the lead-up to an election. There are some very clear business trends that smart small businesses need to know and work within. Elections also provide businesses with a money-can’t-buy education on the latest in marketing trends.
Let’s start with the business trends. The most obvious is a business to government slow down – by that I mean in the lead up to an election the incumbent political party goes into caretaker mode and generally will not make any significant decisions or grant major contracts. If your business is one that relies on government contracts – you need to plan for this slow down to kick in at least 6 months before the scheduled election due period.

| Creating Personal Success ---- Every manager, every employee and every leader that has any drive at all strive to be successful. Success starts with self awareness. That means understanding your personal strengths and weaknesses. It also means having enough humility to work on those weaknesses.
Both the Democrats and the Republicans were preaching change in the presidential election. I only mention that because I really like the buzz words ---
"Yes We Can" that have been used by both campaigns during the Presedential election process. |

Monetary Police is Science, Everything Else is Stamp-Collecting

| This new Eric Leeper paper seems delusional in arguing that monetary policy is science, while fiscal policy is stamp-collecting, but I maybe I'm just being crotchety. The piece also comes up with the new-to-me argument that monetary policy would be even better science if it weren't for fiscal policy mucking things up. |

| It seems like there's no story line that hasn't been done (to death) about today's U.S. election. But one that I've heard nothing about is that of parallels between this election and that of 150 years ago.

And the eighty percent of national news personalities who tend to "lean forward" (possibly because it's much easier than trying to find and report actual facts) refer to it precisely as the "2012 re-election" because, well, they have determined that the president deserves your vote - again.... |

| In the USA, Republican Party campaigning for the next Presidential Election is well under way; in Australia we have constant reminders that some people want Federal Elections to be held now and, in Queensland we have a State Election imminent. What is common to all these is that whoever gets the top job in any of them will then be referred to as a “leader”. What is also common to all of them is that whoever holds the top job now is also referred to as “a leader” but one who, according to pretenders to the throne, is seriously flawed. It begs the question “How can we recognize successful leaders?” |
