Why you can’t have a one-type-of-sales-person-does-it-all approach

There is a large body of research that shows there are many types of sales people for different types of clients, products, and markets. Just because a sales person may be excellent in one market may not mean they are well suited for another. In today's world we are well equipped to define the type of sales role our business needs and define the salesperson's selling style to match that role. So let move away from limiting sales stereotypes and open ourselves to diversity.

Moving Up In Life

It has been accurately stated that when you hire somebody smarter than yourself, you prove you are smarter than they are. We can apply that to all areas of ability. The sales manager should strive diligently to hire sales people who are better at selling than he or she is. That way they can share information and they will both be even more effective. Also, by continuing to learn from each sales person, the manager will stay one step ahead of all of them. Exactly the same thing applies in coaching. A good head coach seeks assistant coaches who know more about their specialty than he does and he learns from them. Ditto for managers in manufacturing, engineering, architecture, etc.

Do You Have a Market Niche?

When you have a clearly defined niche to work within, you can optimize your marketing budget and you can target prospects that really need what you deliver. Offering lead generation services to an ad agency or the local convenience store is not a fit. But offering sales techniques or market research to engineering firms can be a good fit.

THE BEST WAY TO LEAD : PURSUE YOUR PASSION

| "I was just pursuing what I enjoyed doing. I mean, I was pursuing my passion," says Omidyar. "It is not really work if you are having fun...that was the case with me."
From the time he was a young boy, Omidyar knew that his future lied in computers. He didn't know in what capacity, but when other boys were out playing baseball, Omidyar was busy teaching himself Basic. To have denied himself a career in what was obviously his passion would have been to deny himself the success of eBay.
"I always wanted to be involved with computers," recalls Omidyar. His original career choice was computer engineering, but enrollment in Tufts quickly changed that decision. He had been accepted into a rigorous electrical engineering and computer engineering program, but by his own admission, it proved a little too rigorous for Omidyar. |

Engineer Yourself a Better 2011

For whatever reason, I have spent a lot of my time, particularly within the last three years, working with a lot of companies who have sales engineers - meaning that they hire people with engineering backgrounds to be salespeople. When I tell people about this fact, they give expressions of horror or sympathy, because of what they perceive as the difficulty of training engineers to be salespeople. What's funny is, I love working with engineers. Want to know why?
