How to Be a Sales Champion at Any Age!

Its Just a Number
Age is a funny thing, it’s something that people want to speed up and slow down all within the span of a few years. As a child do you recall saying “I can’t wait until I’m all grown up?” I’ll bet that at some point in life you’ll also become wistful for a younger age. No matter which side of the longing scale you’re on, your age or lack there of need not be a deterrent for accomplishing your goals.

Entrepreneurs and the Entrepreneurial Spirit
There are distinct differences in being self-employed, running a small business, starting a new business, and being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneur simply means ‘first to enter’, or the person who takes a plunge into a business venture, which can be in retail, services, or manufacturing. In other words, an entrepreneur is a leader, not a follower or imitator. Can entrepreneurial spirit be taught? Can we educate a population of entrepreneurs that reflect the likes of a Sim Wong Hoo (Creative Technologies) or a Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Group)?

Is Your Brand Representative Of Who You Really Are?
Does your brand show your clients an authentic picture of your business’s personality? Does it shine with your style? Does it feel like it fits you perfectly? If your answer to any of the above is “no”, and your brand doesn’t truly represent you, then you’re setting your clients up with unrealistic expectations. Clients expect that your brand will be an accurate reflection of what you’re all about. If they look at your brand and see an energetic, enthusiastic image, but then working with you is serious and hard, then you’re creating a gap between their expectation and your delivery. And that’s a path to an unhappy client relationship.

Many people think that because they don’t have a formal education or do not have a lot of business experience, then their options for business ownership are very limited. However, that isn’t necessarily the case with franchises and business opportunities.

Give Them a Taste
So you have taken the initiative to approach a Stranger and make them into a Prospect. Now, to make them into a Client. It's important to realize that a Prospect doesn't usually get very interested, let alone excited, about using your services, until they have a deeper sense of who you are and what you can do for them. Giving them an Experience accomplishes this. What do I mean by "Experience?" Read on to find out.

Would you hire this person?
This addresses a pet peeve of mine. And that’s the “Objective” on resumes. Here is a recent example on a resume submitted for my review: “To support the growth and profitability of an organization that provides challenge, encourages advancement, and rewards achievement with the opportunity to utilize my experience, skills, and proven abilities.” Sounds great – would you like to hire this person? But what do you know about this person? Is he/she a candidate for flipping hamburgers or for a CEO position? Does he have skills in supervising, organizing, planning, selling, marketing, etc? Is she proficient in any computer skills? We don’t know. This “Objective” tells us absolutely nothing about the person. It was a total waste of time on the applicant’s part.

Open Door - Right Direction?
Here’s a reader question: Dan, My big goal is to start a business and I’ve taken the first few steps. My broad goal is simply to find a different job. It’s funny though – the more I work on my business plan, the more interviews and job opportunities come open to me. I’m not sure if it’s a sign that I’m really headed on the right track (and the other jobs are distractions) or if it’s a sign that there’s something else out there for me (just a different job, not my own business). How do you figure that out?
