Lesson #4: “Treat People Like You Want to Be Treated”
| |
| With little fanfare and almost no advertising budget to help spin and sell the service, Craigslist has become a global force online due in large part to one factor: the website actually helps people. |

Problem Solving
| |
| Fortunately, problems are an everyday part of our life. Consider this: If there were no problems, most of us would be unemployed. Realistically, the more problems we have and the larger they are, the greater our value to our employer. |

Use Rituals to Create What You Want
| |
| Throughout history, rituals have played an important role in society to usher in new beginnings, communicate intention and celebrate achievement. The notion of communicating directly with the unseen, intangible world of the universe while living on the physical plane is a new one for most people. |

Setting the Bar Higher As a Top Sales Manager
| |
| I just love the "corporate sales buzzwords" don't you?
Some of my personal favorites:
"We need to start thinking outside the box"
"Let's take a deeper dive on that..."
"We need to give it 110 percent!"
"Let's create a win-win for the customer"
"It's all about change management"
"Let's take that offline"
"At the end of the day..."
"Let's produce some strong organic growth"
And my personal favorite:
"We need to set the bar high"
I once heard an expression that stuck with me on the use of profanity in speech. I may not have it exactly right, but it goes like something like this:
"The use of profanity is the work of a feeble mind trying desperately to express itself"
I do have to admit, I do swear a bit...but I never (any more) use cliched corporate sales "buzz words" in front of my sales team.

| In a world of increasingly “same old, same old” and “been there, done that” experiences the eWorld franchise is a breath of freash air . . . and not just because I was one of the speakers at this year’s conference in London. |

If You Build It Will They Come
| |
| Assuming that a website will automatically attract customers is the single biggest mistake that many business owners make. It is this mistake that eventually leads them to dismiss their website as a failure and abandon their online sales efforts. |

Why Corporate Change Programs Fail
| |
| Theories X, Y, and Z. MBO. Grid Management. Situational Leadership. T-groups. Excellence. TQM. Team building. Re-engineering. Empowerment. Diversity. The Seven Habits. You have probably heard of at least one of these programs for business and corporate change. Like insatiable lovers, corporations can journey from one program to another, sometimes not even pausing to take an organizational breath. It is more important to help people grow sanely than quickly. The belief that there's no such thing as too much growth has killed hundreds of companies, careers, marriages, and dreams. |

IV. B. Private Investors: THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR
| |
| While the deals of Chinese state-owned oil companies such as CNPC, CNOOC, and
SINOPEC in Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Sudan caught headlines, millions of
U.S. dollars were being invested by Chinese private enterprises in Africa with little fanfare
(Box 1). These investments are not confined to textiles and mining. They cover a variety of
services from agriculture to processing and manufacturing. |

An Alternative To Paying For Links
| |
| Are paid links hurting the natural search engine rankings of your website? They may very well be. For those of you who haven't kept up with all the fanfare, Google has stated their position against paid links, discrediting the paid link industry and indicating that they will penalize sites that purchase inbound links . |

Sales Techniques - Selling Benefits
| |
| Sell the Sizzle, Not the Steak. This point became overwhelmingly clear recently while eating at a local Mexican food restaurant here in Texas. Someone had ordered Fajitas. It was interesting to note that as the waiter brought out the plate of sizzling beef strips, all the heads in the room turned to notice what delicacy was heading their way. Hence the statement “Sell the sizzle, not the steak.” Steaks had no doubt been brought to various tables with little or no fanfare. However, when the Fajitas entered the room, everyone took notice. You may ask what this has to do with sales. It’s a question of selling |

Lead measures matter much more than lag measures
| |
| I am always slightly amused when economic growth figures and the like are released usually followed by fanfare.
I amused because we won’t know March quarter figures until June! as an example. It's too late then!
These kind of numbers are measurements of the past, often called lag measures. They tell us where we have been, not where we are going. I for one am much more interested in where I am going than where I’ve been. The past is done, over, finished. We can’t change the past. All we can do is learn from it. |
