FASHION INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT – WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS INDUSTRY TODAY?
What would you do if the unexpected happened? How do you cope if you are made redundant and still have to meet your financial obligations? Is there any loyalty shown from your employees when they have to bite the bullet and make staff redundant? This article tells the story about my experience with redundancy and how I not only managed to overcome the problem of finding another job, but about the unique opportunity I was presented with when I decided I wanted to be in control of my life and not leave decisions that affect my livelihood to other people. I have now joined thousands of other successful people, working in a home based business, as a successful entrepreneur, helping others to see how this opportunity can work for them.

The Unbridled Entrepreneur: The Early Years of Vera Wang
Fashion legend Vera Wang was born into an affluent family, but that did not prevent her from knowing failure. Her dreams of becoming an Olympic figure skater never managed to materialize. And, when she was rejected for a position as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine, Wang thought she was all out of options. It was then that she decided to turn a personal dilemma into a business venture. Today, Wang is the Chairman, CEO, and owner of one of the most successful fashion houses in history.

Calvin Conquers America: The Rise of Calvin Klein Ltd.
When he was 26 years old, Klein finally decided to stop taking apprenticeships and to venture out onto his own. With $2,000 of his own money that he had saved and a $10,000 loan from his friend, Barry Schwartz, Klein founded Calvin Klein Ltd. Schwartz became a partner and the two set out to make Klein’s dreams come true.

Lesson #4: Broaden Your Appeal
“I want everyone I can get,” says Klein. “Jews, Catholics, gays straights, you name it!” Klein has risen to the top of the fashion industry by creating products and advertising campaigns that appeal to the broadest cross-section of the population and herein lies part of his genius. By not limiting himself to a certain market and creating a wide range of product lines to accommodate all segments of society, Klein helped solidify his position at the top of the American fashion industry.

Lesson #5: Go After What You Want
“I think fantasies are for the birds,” Klein once said. “Anything I wanted to do, I did. If there’s something I want, nothing stops me.”

It’s a Rap: How Sean Combs Achieved Success
“I have learned to enjoy the ups for what they are, because those are the moments that feel like they go by the quickest,” says Combs. As one of the highest grossing hip-hop stars in history, Combs has been enjoying his current ‘up’ for quite some time now. From the crime-filled streets of Harlem to the lavish luxuries of Hollywood, Combs has shot to international stardom. What were his factors of success?

The Beauty Magnate: Chanel Leaves Her Mark
Chanel was beginning to make a name for herself among the who’s who of Paris all the while acquiring a taste for their luxuries and decadent lifestyle. With her modest hat and dress store, Chanel’s reputation was already beginning to grow as a woman who had little interest in the extravagant and tight-fitting clothes that were all the rage at the time. Instead, she opted for darker and simpler dresses that drew their inspiration from men’s clothing as well as the outfits of the nuns she had grown up around.

Lesson #1: Be One Of A Kind
“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different,” said Chanel. “People laughed at the way I dressed, but that was the secret of my success: I didn’t look like anyone.”

Taking Haute Couture to New Heights: How Chanel Achieved Success
When Time magazine published its list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, Chanel was only the person in the fashion industry to be named. With that, her influence on not only her own field, but on the world as a whole, became obvious. “When I can no longer create anything, I’ll be done for,” Chanel once said. She was a dedicated workaholic who devoted herself competely to her work until the day she died at the age of 88. What were Chanel’s succses factors?

Mademoiselle Coco Chanel
In her inner circle of friends, fashion designer Coco Chanel was known as ‘Mademoiselle’. Over her fifty-odd year career of running her own business, she came to be considered as the ‘Grande Mademoiselle’ of both the fashion industry and high society. Coco Chanel not only revolutionized what women wore, but also the roles they were supposed to play in society.

Lesson #4: Micro Managing Can Mean Mega Success
If there is one thing Armani does well, aside from designing clothes of course, it is micro managing. “My work is my life,” he says. “Even though it is good to take a holiday, after two vacations it is boring.”

Ready to Wear: Lauren Launches His Line
Lauren’s handmade neckties were flying off the shelves. It was a conservative time in the fashion world and Lauren’s ties, showy as they were, were making a splash. But Lauren knew that if he was going to stick around in the business for much longer, he had to follow that up with something else – and fast. In 1968, with the help of a $50,000 loan, Lauren founded Polo Fashions. He chose the name not because he liked the sport; indeed, he had never played polo before in his life. But to Lauren, the name symbolized power and style – an image he wanted his clothes to project.

Lesson #3: Build a Brand that will be Around Tomorrow
“I am not looking like Armani today and somebody else tomorrow,” says Lauren. “I look like Ralph Lauren. And my goal is to constantly move in fashion and move in style without giving up what I am.”

Lesson #3: Stick With the Dress that Fits You Best
Wang was intimately familiar with the sport of ice skating. After her father bought her her first pair of skates and took her to Central Park in New York to try them out, she was immediately hooked. She started taking private lessons at Madison Square Garden and was soon participating in competitions. “Ice skating was the first love of [my] life,” she says.

Lesson #4: For Better or For Worse, There is Always Something to be Learned
It may be Wang’s name and Wang’s name alone that adorns everything from the bed sheets to the wedding gowns of her multi-million dollar business, but Wang’s road to success was not paved single-handedly. Growing up in a privileged family gave Wang many advantages that would come to help her in her later life, the most important of which might have been her early exposure to some of the greatest fashion designers in the world.

The Pros, Cons of Working, Playing in the Clouds
Don't you just love all the fun, the advantages, the freedom, the freakin mystery of the cloud? Look up -- they're light, they're fluffy, they're everywhere. Heck they're even green, ecofriendly...right? But ever so often something is dark on the horizon and the sucka comes roaring in and does some serious damage. Or it can sneak up quietly and SPLAT! slap you where it hurts...really hurts. Cloud computing is like the last wild frontier (sure we'll have more but cloud computing/storage is one biggie) where anything, anyone can go...and it does/they do. It isn't for the faint of heart and it isn't for the dumb ones but it sure attracts them like flies.

"It's so obvious"
I gave a talk to a fashion industry audience recently. I was explaining my research and work around authentic business and why authentic business is simply a better way to do business. One of the people in the audience came to me afterwards and said “it is so obvious, and yet so few businesses do it.” EXACTLY! and this is my mission.

How Promotional Caps became a Fashion Trend
Have you ever wondered how the humble trucker cap became a fashion icon when it was branded with the Von Dutch logo? This is one of those success stories that seem to be too good to be true but prove that promotional products can be used in such a way that they become the fashion of the day. This article focuses on some fundamental marketing strategies and illustrates that the key to success is to know your market and how to influence it. The creators of the Von Dutch cap were able to identify that the easiest path to it's young market was to first recruit influential celebrities and have them be seen to create the new trend by wearing a new style of cap. Any number of promotional products can be used in the same way as long as the appeal of the product and perceived value to recipient is considered.

I Am Iman, Fashion Legend
Supermodel IMAN needs no introduction. There's simply been so much written about her background, model career and marriage to Rock star/Musician David Bowie it would be repeating it heare would be redundant.IMAN has managed to brand her image and name as a fashion icon/legend. It is indeed why we chose to make her our feature during this month of the prestigious New York Fashion Week and to aptly title her feature as “I am Iman, Fashion Legend.” We caught up with the extremely busy Supermodel, albeit briefly, while she was in Canada shooting Project Runway Canada, a show she hosts, to gain a little more insight into her world, especially the Africa side of things.

Are Multiple Supply Chain Networks Important? (A PI Q and A)
I recently posed a question on the importance of Multiple Supply Chain Networks which, within a matter of several hours, elicited 14 responses from around the world. And while the majority of respondents felt that the findings from an ISM, CAPS and AT Kearney 2006 report were not indicative of general market sentiments, it nonetheless has proven to be an issue that is of considerable interest to supply chain professionals and academics. As a result, over the next week I will share the answers as well as corresponding discussion tracks starting today with the response from a Senior Director Supply Chain Operations in the Apparel & Fashion Industry in the United States.

When she made her comeback at the age of 71, and introduced the innovative and hugely popular Coco Chanel handbag, her success was thus all the more remarkable.
