Lesson #3: Customer Satisfaction Means Your Satisfaction
Aside from IBM employees, no one was more important to Watson Jr. than the company’s customers, and nothing was more important than pleasing them – whatever it took. He understood that customer satisfaction lied at the centre of his business success. In the budding new computer industry, marketing would make the difference in attracting new customers, but it was only the satisfied customer who would return to the company time after time.

Lesson #4: Plan Today So You Can Act Fast Tomorrow
Schwab took his company from being a one-man startup to the world’s largest financial services firm in record-setting time. How? Early on, Schwab decided to establish a number of guiding principles that would allow him to make quick decisions. He believed that by following a strict process and adhering to strict requirements, he would be well-prepared ahead of time in order to act with lightening speed.

Social Disease
I have always subscribed to the philosophy of “work hard - play hard”. But I always separated my play FROM my work. What I am referring to is my resistance to socialize with my employees or management peer groups as I worked my way up the corporate ladder. There is an inherent danger in creating a social environment within the workspace that spreads to the after work space. This almost ALWAYS ends badly. Here is my list of No-No’s:

Finding alternate lead sources within your company
Many sales reps often overlook valuable lead sources within their own company, and spend precious selling time looking for leads outside their office doors. They attend networking events, travel to conferences and trade shows, partner with other sales reps, and research potential external lead sources, but rarely consider all the invaluable sources of information around them.

The Importance of an Effective Orientation
An orientation is merely an introduction of your company to the new employee and of this new person to your business; your clients, products and services, and the way you conduct business. Many new employees become frustrated and decide that accepting the job offer was a mistake because you, the new employer did not take the time to orient him or her to the new job.

Duty of care includes protecting employees from violence outside of work
The NSW Court of Appeal recently upheld a decision of the District Court that a Company had breached its duty of care to an employee by not sacking or disciplining an employee ("the shooter") about his outbursts at work, in circumstances where the shooter later shot another employee three times with a gun outside work hours in a street outside the workplace.

Getting Maximum Results from Small Business Employees
A small business owner from the UK recently e-mailed me with this question: " I currently have a small business staff of 8 and expected that when I arrived at this point I would have more time for strategic planning and my personal life. Instead, I constantly have to oversee everything. Do you have any suggestions as to how can I get better results from my employees so I can trust that things will run smoothly when I’m not there?"

Involve your employees in your business
You may be saying - but I do involve my employees in my business...but do you? Of course your employees to do the work of the business and the employees, with the right direction, make any business great as it expands, but there are not many business owners that involve their employees in helping with important decisions. I would suggest that you ask them their opinion on various expansion ideas or where you are looking at introducing new products or services get their input on this. Over the years there have been recent talks on how to keep employees engaged. The engagement challenge is especially pertinent in this economy, where organizations are feeling pressure to keep their talented employees. Happy Thanksgiving. And here's to the president. I wouldn't say he's the founder of our feast, but he's a decent fellow, our elected leader, and a person worthy of at least some gratitude from all of us....
