Lesson #3: Management Means To Inspire Creativity

“From a management standpoint, it is very important to know how to unleash people's inborn creativity,” said Morita. “My concept is that anybody has creative ability, but very few people know how to use it.” Morita created one of the world’s largest multinational corporations but he did not do it alone. Indeed, over his fifty-year career, Morita became one of the most outspoken businessmen for sound management principles, of which his were largely based on Japanese traditions.

Prayer and purposeful action

| I awoke early this morning to the sound of gentle rain falling and found myself immediately praying for more. This prayer came automatically during one of the most tragic weeks in Victoria’s history with the tragedy of the bush fires in many parts of our state.
As a Victorian I have found myself upping my prayer quotient for rain for some time now, not just for the bush fires but for the many people whose lives are affected by the drought here and elsewhere. In addition to my prayers, like many families, my family and I have been doing our best to save water and change the size of our carbon foot print. Yet at times like this one can’t help but feel somewhat helpless and useless. All I felt I could do under the circumstances was to pray and give money. |

Smart Cents: How J.C. Penney Built An Empire

Penney once said that there were no secrets to his success, but that the principles of business were simple: “In retailing, the formula happens to be a basic liking for human beings, plus integrity, plus industry, plus the ability to see the other fellow’s point of view.” In 1920, the J.C. Penney Company had over 197 stores along the West coast. Just nine years later, that number had grown to more than 1,400 stores across the country; new stores had been opening at a rapid rate of almost one every three days. Today, the company has grown to be one of the nation’s largest retailers. By the time Penney died at the age of 95, sales for the company he had helped grow finally reached the $5 billion mark. How did he do it?

Balancing possessions and life harmony

There are no quick fixes in the World. It just does not work out that way. Unless we, that is us Human Beings, are ‘fixed’ we will be unable to fix anything else. I interpret being ‘fixed’ as being in harmony with ourselves, having some balance between the various aspects of our lives and with other sentient beings.

Part 3 - Relationships and service

It is absolutely essential for any manager to communicate with and to understand what motivates each individual staff member. This brings relationships to the fore as the most important factor for any manager in any business. We are not just caged canaries or a selection of laboratory rats. We are thinking, feeling human beings, trying to be just that – human beings - not just human doers. We live to express ourselves creatively and to grow and develop each in our own unique way.

TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More

Don’t underestimate the importance of being a part of a team. We as human beings are designed as relational beings. We’re not meant to go through this life on our own; and in every area of our lives we’ll find ourselves thinking, acting, and living like those we choose to surround ourselves with.

Increasing Your Impact and Influence - Move Your Thinking Somewhere Else

To have lasting personal impact and influence requires you to not only be conscious of what you are doing but to notice the effects on the other person or people and to modify your behaviour based on what you notice. This means using the inbuilt qualities and abilities of the human brain to transport you and your thinking to another place or position – and from that position you can be a more effective negotiator or influencer. As human beings we are, as far as we know, the only animals that can practise not only empathy but imagine ourselves in a different place or time and observe what is happening from that perspective. Personal impact and influence requires you to constantly use that ability of the advanced human brain to best effect.
