Lesson #4: Master the Art of the Sale
| |
| Johnson became a self-made media mogul, publisher, and entrepreneur, but the title he identified most with was that of salesman. In his best-selling autobiography, Succeeding Against the Odds, Johnson wrote a chapter entitled, “How to Sell Anybody Anything in Five Minutes or Less.” Here, he outlined his craft of salesmanship, which proved to be one of the key factors the propelled him to such great success. |

Lesson #4: Make People Your Priority
| |
| “Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy,” says Buffett. “And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. You think about it; it's true. If you hire somebody without the first, you really want them to be dumb and lazy.” |

To Listen or Not To Listen
| |
| Yesterday, I was on a conference call with an entrepreneur that I’ve backed in the past. He wanted to walk me through the idea for a new business that he was working on. His goal was simply to get feedback from me at the very early stage of his idea – he wasn’t pitching me for an investment. We got about five minutes into the pitch when I interrupted him. |

|
Get Right to the Point
| |
| I once hired a very qualified young man. I expected him to be great. But boy, was I ever wrong. This guy took so long to explain everything that I began to dread talking with him. He was just too slow. Yes, he was thorough and painstaking, but he couldn't keep pace. He wasted too much time. |

Don't Be Casual

| Coming out of the Venture Capital in the Rockies conference, I was pleasantly surprised with how solid most of the presentations were. There was plenty of pre-conference preparation, practice, and iteration from the companies presenting – and it showed. |

Scheduling
| |
|
It’s been said, “You can always get more stuff, but you can never get more time!” There will always be more to do than you can accomplish in a day and more people needing more of you than you are willing to give! It’s enough to make you want to pull your hair out! But don’t - instead think about the power of planning.

Vocabulary
| |
| Learn one new word each day. In less than five minutes per day you can get amazing results. The average American learns only twenty-five new words each year and actually has a speaking vocabulary of five hundred words. One new word per day will mean that in one year you will have a distinct advantage over most people with whom you are dealing; within five years you will have a colossal advantage, not because you know the words but because those words give you a breadth and depth of understanding that will enrich your life in every way. Plus there is more good news: Every word has several buddies; when you learn one new word you’ve just expanded your vocabulary by several more.

I Know How to Do This!
| |
| I thought I had pre-paved a happy-go-lucky attitude towards being a mother. I had intended to let my son, Lucky, follow his own path and my job was to get out of the way. Ahem! Well, my little controller side came out in full force in ways I had not expected.
I started out by trusting that Lucky would find his own sleeping pattern. That didn't work. So, when he was four months old I swung to the opposite side of the issue. My child would forever more be on a sleeping schedule. This potentially could've worked if I were more relaxed about it. But I wasn't. I was in huge conflict with my mate, Steve, about my schedule and method of putting Lucky to bed. |

Eating For Success: Breakfast For The Busy Corporate
| |
| The first place that we cut corners when we are busy or stressed is our eating and in particular our breakfast. The food you eat forms the very building blocks of your body, but most of us have lost sight of the fact that food is fuel and that the purpose of eating is to provide our bodies with the tools they need for energy, functioning, building and maintenance. We eat for a variety of different reasons, none of which relate to the idea of providing our bodies with quality fuel. We eat unconsciously, we use food to fill emotional voids or to be sociable and we fill our bodies with things that we all know aren’t good for us – in effect, rather than using food as essential fuel, we use it to inflict damage on ourselves. |

What culture do you develop?
| |
| As a leader have you considered the culture you want in your organization? A culture of an organization is determined by the behaviors and perceptions of your people.
Consider, how your people treat your customers, how they treat each other, what their perception of your suppliers is, or more importantly, what do they think of the leaders and managers?
You have heard the phrase 'walk-the-talk', people are watching you and based on your behavior they develop perceptions and will act accordingly.
As an observer of an organization, it is very easy to identify the culture, one visit to a store, one interaction with the sales team, or customer service department will provide you with an indication of what is happening in that organization. |

Optimizing E-mail: Stay Productive, Not Busy

Email offers us countless ways to save time and be more productive, but when we go on “email autopilot” – checking the inbox repeatedly, typing out messages that should be discussed, copying people who are only peripherally involved, and other bad habits we’ve picked up along the way – email can make us more busy than productive.

Taking Back Your Life
| |
| Do you feel like you are a slave to your home based business? Are you working seven days a week, with many of those days being 10 - 12 hour work days? If your answer is "yes", you are not alone. This seems to be the syndrome that many home based business owners fall into.
One of the downfalls in running a home-based business is that many individuals are not able to break away as they would if they worked outside the home. It is too easy to walk by your office, pop in for what you anticipate will be a quick five minutes, and end up coming back out of your office an hour or two later. When your office is in the home, the hours can blur together, and, if you are not careful, your business will consume you. |

| In a typical 60-minute sales call, a salesperson spends 30 minutes talking about products or services, 9 minutes asking questions ,and 12 minutes letting the customer speak. Why Are Meetings One Hour Long?
| |
| The vast majority of meetings in the business world are scheduled for one hour. I think this is a paradigm we should challenge for several reasons.
1. Like an old habit, we just fall into the pattern without even thinking about it.
2. We lose track of those extremely valuable minutes within the hour format. We can do better than that.
3. The meeting itself is often inefficient as there is time to schmooze for the first 20 minutes or so, and most of the decisions occur in the final 10 minutes of a meeting.
There are many techniques for squeezing more usable time from our daily schedule – and we really need them. Next time you schedule a meeting, try making it 50 minutes rather than an hour. It will emphasize the importance of the minutes and save time in the bargain.
