CES … It’s a Show, It’s Biz, Live with It
| |
| Sure we hate missing the holiday season to get ready for the really big show. Sure we hate the hours of standing on thinly carpeted concrete for hours on end to see what's hot, what's new, who's new, who's gone but has CES begun to lose its shine? No the market changes, the industry changes, the association changes, the show changes. The 3,000 + small/medium CES stands get overwhelmed by the big boys' big budgets but these hidden jewels are what keep the industry moving forward and being part of folks daily lives.

What I Learned From Coach Vince Lombardi That Guides Me in My Business
| |
| As a youth, I started playing organized, supervised football through the Boy’s Club in Elizabethtown, PA. I went on to play football at the junior high, junior varsity, varsity, collegiate levels and beyond for a total of about 18 years. During those years, I became totally impressed with a football coach named Vince Lombardi and his principles. And to this day, I try to use what I learned from Coach Lombardi in my business coaching practice and my personal life.
Coach Lombardi believed that running a football team was no different than running any other kind of organization or business. Reflecting on the Maraniss book, other reading and personal experiences, I selected 10 key character traits & 2 quotes from Coach Lombardi for each trait to represent the lesson learned from each character item. |

The Cookie Connoisseur: The Early Years of Debbi Fields
| |
| “I was really happy being a housewife,” says Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies. “I was proud to be there for my husband, but it did not necessarily make me feel great.” Longing for something more out of life than being just a mother and a wife, Fields turned her lifelong passion for baking into a multimillion dollar enterprise that has continued to attract a loyal following throughout the U.S. She did not have a business degree or the support from her family, but what Fields did have was a dream. |

Cooking Up a Storm: Fields Opens Up Shop
| |
| After realizing how unsatisfied with her life she had become, Fields decided something needed to change. And, she knew instantly what it was. “In that room, that evening, I made a decision that I was going to go into the cookie business,” says Fields, “that that was my calling, that that was what I could do best.” |

Lesson #5: Stop Doing What is Not Working
| |
| When Fields opened up her very first store, she was excited. She had finally created a solid business plan and found a banker that believed in her. On the store’s first day of business, Fields’ husband questioned her about her long-term financial objectives, but Fields was so excited to finally be in business, she dismissed him. “Oh my gosh, Randy,” she told him. “You know, I’ve got an annual goal. I’ve got monthly plans. But today I just want to get started. I just want to open up the store.” |

Turnovers & Takeaways
| |
| True football fans, particularly those like me who consider football a religion rather than a mere obsession, speak an entirely different language than you normal people. While I am, like other “NFLians” bound by a certain code of honor, I’m going to let the rest of you inside our secret world: just this once! |

IT'S ABOUT PROCESS NOT OUTCOMES OR WHAT FOOTBALL TAUGHT ME
| |
| Two of the greatest life lessons I ever learned believe it or not came early in my amateur football coaching career. They were to have a profound effect on my philosophy of life thereafter.
So, if you can bear with me and allow my propensity to perhaps over-romanticize my 25 years as a football coach, I promise there is a lesson(s) here. You don't even have to like the sport! |

At The Risk Of Making Myself Extremely Unpopular!...
| |
| Football (Soccer) is a subject that builds great emotion in the heart of the average british male (and some females too). People will happily spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds per year going to watch their favourite team, they buy the latest 'strip', they travel hundreds of miles to watch away games, they pay for Sky TV to watch the best matches live and even travel abroad to watch a match. Football (or Soccer if you are in the US) is a revered sport of gods! |

Dumb Jocks … Or Smart Athletes?
| |
| We all know the stereotype. The great athlete didn't spend much time honing his intellectual skills; instead, all of his efforts were spent on the athletic field and thus, he tends to be lacking in the brains department. Like all stereotypes, this idea does not encompass all athletes, but still seems to be pervasive, especially among football players, where we all chuckle about the easy courses they take in college, etc. For example, it seems like 90 % of football players are Sociology majors, often the easiest curriculum at the university. However, some new research cited in Scientific American is stereotype breaking.

When Mars Attacks, The Economy Roars!
| |
| When I was a student at the Graduate School of Public Administration (our school colors were red and more red; our motto, "Sempre Turfbuildus"), they made us study the works of major geniuses in such fields as economics and massive government. One of the chief geniuses in both fields was Paul Krugman, who was an advisor to President Clinton (and now claims President Obama among his adherents).... |
