Meeting with people- Establish rapport
Last week I started talking about an important part of your Marketing and Branding Strategy, which is to meet with people, usually one-on-one. I made some suggestions on agenda topics you can use with these meetings. This week, I will discuss establishing rapport.

What I Learned From Coach Vince Lombardi That Guides Me in My Business
As a youth, I started playing organized, supervised football through the Boy’s Club in Elizabethtown, PA. I went on to play football at the junior high, junior varsity, varsity, collegiate levels and beyond for a total of about 18 years. During those years, I became totally impressed with a football coach named Vince Lombardi and his principles. And to this day, I try to use what I learned from Coach Lombardi in my business coaching practice and my personal life. Coach Lombardi believed that running a football team was no different than running any other kind of organization or business. Reflecting on the Maraniss book, other reading and personal experiences, I selected 10 key character traits & 2 quotes from Coach Lombardi for each trait to represent the lesson learned from each character item.

Turnovers & Takeaways
True football fans, particularly those like me who consider football a religion rather than a mere obsession, speak an entirely different language than you normal people. While I am, like other “NFLians” bound by a certain code of honor, I’m going to let the rest of you inside our secret world: just this once!

Simple Strategic Planning for the Independent Retailer
Strategic planning guides a retail organization towards those goals that will provide the stakeholders with the results that will encourage continued investment in the organization. The plan becomes the roadmap for the ongoing growth of the organization. An effective strategic planning process is a key management tool for insuring a vital, growing organization. As the planning process becomes part of the day to day activities of an organization, the results will become the fuel to maintain and improve the planning process.

Lesson #5: “It's who you are as an organization that makes everything possible.”
If it is who you are as an organization that makes everything possible, then it is who you are as a leader that makes the organization what it is. Wrigley Jr.’s organization was a strong one because he was an even stronger leader. It was several of his key personal characteristics that made the organization reach the heights it did under his leadership.

IT'S ABOUT PROCESS NOT OUTCOMES OR WHAT FOOTBALL TAUGHT ME
Two of the greatest life lessons I ever learned believe it or not came early in my amateur football coaching career. They were to have a profound effect on my philosophy of life thereafter. So, if you can bear with me and allow my propensity to perhaps over-romanticize my 25 years as a football coach, I promise there is a lesson(s) here. You don't even have to like the sport!

Operating Without A Human Resources Department
Great Human Resource professionals add value to any organization. Recruiting and retaining star performers, building a productive workforce, coaching managers to perform at higher levels, ensuring that the organization stays compliant, and raising the bar on performance are what HR brings to the table. HR can be the difference between success and failure in an organization. But what can an organization do if they don't have an HR professional on staff? This is the predicament faced by many companies.

Don't Quit Planning During Uncertain Times
The wise person will always plan for change and through change. The leader’s role needs to be one of keeping the organization true to the overall mission and vision of the organization while at the same time always being aware of changes on the horizon which could enhance or threaten the organization’s success in the future and, in the end, steering the organization through those changes. Plans today must be much more adaptable and flexible to change and more inclusive of others and their opinions if they will succeed; but plans must be made that serve to move the organization forward.

At The Risk Of Making Myself Extremely Unpopular!...
Football (Soccer) is a subject that builds great emotion in the heart of the average british male (and some females too). People will happily spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds per year going to watch their favourite team, they buy the latest 'strip', they travel hundreds of miles to watch away games, they pay for Sky TV to watch the best matches live and even travel abroad to watch a match. Football (or Soccer if you are in the US) is a revered sport of gods!

Dumb Jocks … Or Smart Athletes?
We all know the stereotype. The great athlete didn't spend much time honing his intellectual skills; instead, all of his efforts were spent on the athletic field and thus, he tends to be lacking in the brains department. Like all stereotypes, this idea does not encompass all athletes, but still seems to be pervasive, especially among football players, where we all chuckle about the easy courses they take in college, etc. For example, it seems like 90 % of football players are Sociology majors, often the easiest curriculum at the university. However, some new research cited in Scientific American is stereotype breaking.

New Penn State Coach - Just Like Dysfunctional Sales Management
Officials at Penn State will introduce Bill O'Brien as their first new head football coach in nearly 50 years. He will be responsible for rebuilding the football program and through that, the image of the school. That will be one difficult job and it begins immediately. Today, Bill O'Brien is still the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. Because the Patriots are the #1 seed in the playoffs, Bill O'Brien has another challenging job - preparing and helping the Patriots offense, led by future Hall of Fame Quarterback Tom Brady, to compensate for their own pathetic defense, as they attempt to advance to another Super Bowl championship. Bill O'Brien. One coach - two full time jobs. Both teams need his immediate, undivided attention and won't get all that they need.
