Football's Pitch Count and the Connection to the Sales Force
Herm Edwards, currently of ESPN and formerly the Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, was interviewed on WEEI, Boston's Sports Talk Radio station today. He said a couple of things that were quite compelling:

The "Lunch Bucket Salesperson"
What is a "bucket mentality"? Usually this phrase is referenced with football players and their approach to the game. “Rough, tough, lunch bucket group of guys...they'll do whatever is takes to win". Can this mentality be applied to sales? Are you a "lunch bucket salesperson"? Read on.

What I Learned From Coach Vince Lombardi That Guides Me in My Business
As a youth, I started playing organized, supervised football through the Boy’s Club in Elizabethtown, PA. I went on to play football at the junior high, junior varsity, varsity, collegiate levels and beyond for a total of about 18 years. During those years, I became totally impressed with a football coach named Vince Lombardi and his principles. And to this day, I try to use what I learned from Coach Lombardi in my business coaching practice and my personal life. Coach Lombardi believed that running a football team was no different than running any other kind of organization or business. Reflecting on the Maraniss book, other reading and personal experiences, I selected 10 key character traits & 2 quotes from Coach Lombardi for each trait to represent the lesson learned from each character item.

Turnovers & Takeaways
True football fans, particularly those like me who consider football a religion rather than a mere obsession, speak an entirely different language than you normal people. While I am, like other “NFLians” bound by a certain code of honor, I’m going to let the rest of you inside our secret world: just this once!

Imagine a Bigger Market and You'll See a Bigger Market
Scientists in two studies at the University of Virginia discovered that softball players and golfers who had good days perceived balls and golf holes as larger than the players who had bad days. The question is, Did this difference in perception cause the player to have better days or did the day's performance cause the players to perceive the ball and holes as bigger?

Synergy, The Power of the Flock
What happens when a group of players with mediocre talent outperforms a team of superstars? Just because you have a group of players playing together doesn’t mean they’re a team. “It’s easy to get the players. Getting them to play together, that’s the hard part,” said Casey Stengel, the former great New York Yankee manager.

IT'S ABOUT PROCESS NOT OUTCOMES OR WHAT FOOTBALL TAUGHT ME
Two of the greatest life lessons I ever learned believe it or not came early in my amateur football coaching career. They were to have a profound effect on my philosophy of life thereafter. So, if you can bear with me and allow my propensity to perhaps over-romanticize my 25 years as a football coach, I promise there is a lesson(s) here. You don't even have to like the sport!

Learn more skills in Sales to get the Results you want
It's a Monday morning after the big match at the weekend and the premier league football coach brings the team in to review the match. On goes the video and the coach and players watch, each move is analysed, the tape is stopped and the coach asks the group what was good, what was poor and what can they do different next time.

Dumb Jocks … Or Smart Athletes?
We all know the stereotype. The great athlete didn't spend much time honing his intellectual skills; instead, all of his efforts were spent on the athletic field and thus, he tends to be lacking in the brains department. Like all stereotypes, this idea does not encompass all athletes, but still seems to be pervasive, especially among football players, where we all chuckle about the easy courses they take in college, etc. For example, it seems like 90 % of football players are Sociology majors, often the easiest curriculum at the university. However, some new research cited in Scientific American is stereotype breaking.

Why Coaching is the Way to Go in Team Management
When you hear the word “coach”, what comes first into your mind? Do you picture a basketball team with a man/woman shouting out directions? Or perhaps a football team with a man/woman pacing to and fro and calling out the names of the players?

Only A Level Players Need Apply
“A” level players want to work with other “A” level players. It makes them better, stronger and even more productive. So, the question is how much time and energy and effort do we spend trying to make “B” level players into “A” level players? How much success have we had? How about instead today we make a commitment to go out and start finding and bringing in“A” level players.
