What I Learned From Coach Vince Lombardi That Guides Me in My Business
As a youth, I started playing organized, supervised football through the Boy’s Club in Elizabethtown, PA. I went on to play football at the junior high, junior varsity, varsity, collegiate levels and beyond for a total of about 18 years. During those years, I became totally impressed with a football coach named Vince Lombardi and his principles. In short, I thought the book was a marvel—explaining pockets of amazing talent, such as Brazil and football-soccer, and, based in part on new findings in neuroscience, turning conventional ideas about teaching and learning on their head. I'll have more to say when The Talent Code appears, and Dan, I hope, will consent to becoming a Cool Friend. In a rather trivial (however, not to me at the time) way I had a chance to practice parts of what Dan discovered—and was stunned at the efficacy of his findings in this small case.
IT'S ABOUT PROCESS NOT OUTCOMES OR WHAT FOOTBALL TAUGHT ME
Two of the greatest life lessons I ever learned believe it or not came early in my amateur football coaching career. They were to have a profound effect on my philosophy of life thereafter. So, if you can bear with me and allow my propensity to perhaps over-romanticize my 25 years as a football coach, I promise there is a lesson(s) here. You don't even have to like the sport!
Practice, Practice, Practice then Play
In the sporting world it is expected that athletes make the time to practice, practice, practice and then go and compete or play the game. Through regular practice they hone their skills, behaviours and attitudes to ensure they are ‘match fit’ and ready to compete at the highest standards. A sports team needs to make sure that when they are in the thick of the game they can draw upon those skill drills and practice sessions to perform well as a team and perform well under pressure. When an individual athlete is neck and neck with a competitor racing for the finish line they need to know how to dig deep and draw upon their experiences, skills, and mental and physical reserves to cross the finish line first. This cannot happen without lots of conscious, purposeful practice.

We all know the stereotype.
