Entrepreneurs and the State
| |
| Entrepreneurs require an "enabling state" to provide the policy framework, supportive services, and the public goods of a social and physical infrastructure. Government officials are more likely to support their entrepreneurs if they can identify private sector industrialization as being in their interest. Both Southeast Asia and Subsaharan Africa have had challenges in this area. |

7.0 Policy/programme coordination and leadership: Support for Growth-oriented Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania, 2005
| |
| At the time of the field visit to Tanzania (November 2003), there was no formal
focal point for women’s entrepreneurship development within the government. An

Trends in Human Capital Formation in Developing Countries: Background
| |
| The level of human capital in developing countries has on average improved over
the past three decades, owing to enhanced government commitments in formal
education and vocational training as well as increased incentives of firms to provide
enterprise training. |

3.1.2 Training for the formal sector: Training priorities, resources and reorientation
| |
| Despite oft-repeated government pronouncements about the need for concerted efforts to improve the skills of the poor, responding to formal sector training needs has remained the top priority for most public sector training institutions during the 1990s. |

7.3.2 Training as a basic social service: Mainstreaming skills development for the poor
| |
| Redressing inequities and under-provision in the formal education system is of vital importance, both for achieving a more equitable allocation of jobs in the formal sector for women and other disadvantaged groups and, more widely, for sustained poverty reduction. |

7.3.4 Labour market reform: Mainstreaming skills development for the poor
| |
| Training for the poor must also be part of a coherent set of active labour market policies. Without concerted government interventions to eliminate key impediments that prevent women, disabled persons and other discriminated groups from gaining equitable access to formal sector jobs, efforts to equalise training entitlements will ultimately fail. |

| “Only Government can fix the mess we are in”, President Obama.
“Government is the problem…”, Nate McCulloch Gwinnett Daily Post
We speak of government as if it were our neighbor, pastor, teacher, friend or foe. It is none of these and yet it is all of these. Government, at any level, is simply an organizational structure and is incapable of any action or activity until people are inserted into the equation. Our founding fathers meant it when they said “of the people, by the people and for the people”
So the problem and/or solution lie with us.

If Business Ran Like the Government
| |
| The big news these days is the federal government’s debt ceiling. Every time Washington gets into one of these messes - which it does a lot - people renew the discussion about how government should be run. “If I ran my company the way they run the government…” The outcome is usually bankruptcy or prison. Should government be run like a business? That’s a debate for another article. But, the surprising thing is many business ARE run like the government. Do you understand how to manage cash flow in your business? Does your company cater to special interests, waste money or time or push problems aside instead of addressing the real issue? |

Renewing Limited Government: Term Limits
| |
| In America, the "land of the free," the government has run amok. The Founders, who fought (and in some cases, died) to leave a country wherein citizens were to rule and the government was supposed to be limited, would be shocked at the size of the behemoth that is the modern federal government. And many states have just as bloated a bureaucracy.... |
