Fred Smith Has Lift-Off: The Beginnings of Federal Express

“By the early '70s when I'd gotten out of the service it was very clear that this new society was coming in earnest,” recalls Smith. “And so, at that point I said, ‘What the hell, let's try to put it together.’” After leaving the U.S. Marine Corps, Smith purchased a controlling interest in Ark Aviation Sales, a company that focused on aircraft maintenance. This was the first step towards realizing his goal of what would soon become Federal Express.

The Message Man From Mississippi: Fred Smith is Born

“I think the American Dream is freedom,” says Fred Smith. “It's the ability to do what you want to do. It's the freedom to succeed; it's the freedom to fail. And the freedom to live your lifestyle the way you want to live it…Very few people in the history of the world have ever had that enormous opportunity.”

Personal Discipline

Personal discipline, when it becomes a way of life in our personal, family, and career lives, will enable us to do some incredible things. One of my favorite sayings is "When you discipline yourself to do the things you need to do when you need to do them, the day will come when you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them."

Misleading Mind-Sets, and Powerful Heart-Sets

Mind-sets can be accurate from a rational point of view but still be wrong. For example, a management professor at Yale University once responded to a student's proposal of a reliable overnight service that it was a "concept that is interesting and well informed, but in order to earn better than a C the idea must be feasible." Fred Smith went on to found the Federal Express Corporation. In the end, the professor's mind-set was wrong because his idea of what was feasible was limited. What is feasible, functional, possible, or proper to one person may be utter nonsense to a person who is working from the heart.

Creating the Vision

Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, has stated, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” Clear visions have helped shape and propel impressive companies. For example, Fred Smith, founder of Federal Express, had a vision that packages could be delivered around the United States by the next morning. Disney wanted to make families smile. Microsoft wanted to create beneficial software that would compel people to have a computer on every desk at work, home and school. Coke wanted to have its refreshing beverages within the reach of every person in the world. Dominos wanted you to have hot, delicious pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less or it was free.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit

Fred Karl, designer of the Viking range and owner of that company said, "I was a weird kid—I began designing towns when I was 12." We all know that "weird" can be good, if we don't judge others through our lens ... Being weird increases creativity if we allow it to flourish. Fred Karl, founder of Viking Range, let his weirdness flourish abundantly.

Chris Gardner Story

When you first hear the Chris Gardner story, you might think you were hearing the storyline of a Hollywood movie. In fact, the Chris Gardner story was so real that it was turned into a movie, the recently released “The Pursuit of Happyness” starring Will Smith and his real-life son Jaden Smith. But, before becoming the subject of a major motion picture, the Chris Gardner story was one of uncertainty and insecurity.
