Pragmatic Optimism
| |
| Most people consider me an optimist because I laughingly state that I would take my last two dollars and buy a money belt. I'd even go after Moby Dick in a rowboat, and take the tartar sauce with me! However, I've got to confess that I don't hold a candle to the ultimate lady optimist who lived in a retirement home. |

Unlimited Potential by Robin J Elliott
| |
| If every car that crossed the Port Mann Bridge each gave you just one dollar per MONTH, you would earn $300,000 per month. Every driver could afford one dollar per month, and all you would have to do is give him a reason to pay you. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR CLIENTS REALLY NEED
| |
| By John Doerr
Ray Kinsella: So what do you want?
Terence Mann: I want them to stop looking to me for answers, begging me to speak again, write again, be a leader. I want them to start thinking for themselves. I want my privacy.
Ray Kinsella: No, I mean, what do you WANT?
[Gestures to the concession stand they're in front of]
Terence Mann: Oh. Dog and a beer.
- From the movie Field of Dreams, 1989
All too often it seems I am stuck in this great scene from the movie Field of Dreams (one of my all time favorites) when I ask professional service providers what needs they fill for their clients.

Beyond Manipulating and Motivating to Leading and Inspiring
| |
| We've known for decades that money doesn't motivate most people to higher levels of performance. In his seminal 1959 book, The Motivation to Work, Frederick Herzberg identified money as a "hygiene factor." If we feel we're not fairly compensated, lack of money can de-motivate. But once we feel we're treated fairly, the promise of more money doesn't sustain higher energy and mobilize inspired performance. |
