Ice Cream Kings: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are Born
“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream,” proclaims Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of one of the most popular brands of ice cream in the U.S. Indeed, the success of Ben & Jerry’s since its launch almost thirty years ago seems to support his claim. From the $5 correspondence course in ice cream making Greenfield and his partner Ben Cohen took from the Pennsylvania State University in 1978, to being named “U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year” by President Reagan in 1988, the childhood friends not only achieved tremendous success, but they did so on their own terms.

The Inside Scoop: How Ben & Jerry’s Achieved Success
They turned their $5 for an ice cream making course into a successful multimillion dollar business, and they had a lot of fun in the process. But, Ben & Jerry’s isn’t just about the delicious ice cream. From taking a stand against nuclear weapons to discussing America politics and corporate social responsibility, founders Cohen and Greenfield are taking the vision for their business to the wider world. How did two anti-corporate hippies become millionaires and respected business leaders in the 21st century?

Appearance
Okay - I admit it - this one is extreme. Several years ago before I realized that my body retains ice cream, my wife and I were in our favorite ice cream parlor. An unusual-looking young man walked through the front door. In my lifetime I have never seen anything like it. His hair was sticking out in every direction and came to a point at the top so sharp that it was dangerous. He had every imaginable color represented - green, purple, orange, red, lavender, black - it was really a sight to behold!

Customers Needs-The One and Only Way to Know For Sure What To Sell
If it were up to me there would only be two or three flavors of ice cream ever created. If you don't love chocolate chip and strawberry ice cream it is a good thing for you my tastes and desires aren't the holy grail of what sells! Don't let your preferences and desires determine what you sell. And for your businesses sake, don't assume that your preferences are shared by your customer. Desire and motivation is unique to each of us. Even if we ultimately purchase the same product we often do so for very different reasons and therefore need to be marketed to differently.

A Website Without Video Is Like...
Do you like Jell-O? It's okay I guess; I mean it's not a hot fudge sundae is it? But if you add a little whip cream, then my friend you've got something worth calling dessert. My question to you is, does your website have that something extra, that dollop of whip cream on top that says, "oh mama let me at it," or does it just lie there squirming in your dish with the sound of Peggy Lee's voice ringing in your ears, "is that all there is?"

Free Publicity & Other Fairy Tales
There are loads of references to “free PR” or “free publicity” on the internet. It sounds great. Who wouldn’t want free PR? But if you keep reading you’ll find that 99.9% of the time, these are companies that are selling you ways to get free PR. So, is it still free after you’ve paid for it?

FREE isnt what it used to be
Email, is indeed free but free isn't what it used to be! No Sir, in the past, getting something for free was exciting, like winning, even though you didn't have to compete for it. "You can have this for free", usually meant, I like you and want you to feel special.

GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE
I could just tell by the look of them they were going to be difficult. There were going to want to split their meals, order a half salad, half French fries. They were the type that when they ordered a strawberry sundae it they would make some ridiculous request for a dab of whipping cream. Not a dollop. And God help her if one of them orders a milkshake. She’d be at the milkshake maker up to her elbows in chocolate ice cream.

Free web site platforms
Free is the most popular word on the internet today. Free is good..........No? Yes sometimes free is not good. Free web site platforms. They are good if you want to just have a personal web page on the internet. BUT if you are in business, even if you are just starting out, stay away from free web host. You know the kind, where you get to publish a site something like; w w w. freehost.com/yourWebpage . There are even some that will let you have you own domain name (w w w. yourdomain.com) but will have an ad somewhere that says hosted by "free web host".

Fork It Over: The DOs & DON’Ts of Data Collections
In the digital age many of us are inundated on a daily basis with requests for information. From mailing lists to client surveys, everybody wants to beef up their customer data. Getting customers to fork over sensitive information is no small feat, and (as with anything) some ways are better than others. Take Starbucks for example. This year, just like last year, I received my annual Starbucks “Happy Birthday Free Drink Card”. As we always do my wife and I searched up and down the extensive Starbucks’ menu for the priciest drink. Eventually we settled on some sort of fruit-coffee-ice cream concoction for the whopping price of $7 (CDN). We drank about half of it. So how did Starbucks even know it was my birthday and why was I entitled to a free drink?
